    Transient Reward Approximation for Continuous-Time Markov Chains

    We are interested in the analysis of very large continuous-time Markov chains (CTMCs) with many distinct rates. Such models arise naturally in the context of reliability analysis, e.g., of computer network performability analysis, of power grids, of computer virus vulnerability, and in the study of crowd dynamics. We use abstraction techniques together with novel algorithms for the computation of bounds on the expected final and accumulated rewards in continuous-time Markov decision processes (CTMDPs). These ingredients are combined in a partly symbolic and partly explicit (symblicit) analysis approach. In particular, we circumvent the use of multi-terminal decision diagrams, because the latter do not work well if facing a large number of different rates.     Symblicit Exploration and Elimination for Probabilistic Model Checking

    Binary decision diagrams can compactly represent vast sets of states, mitigating the state space explosion problem in model checking. Probabilistic systems, however, require multi-terminal diagrams storing rational numbers. They are inefficient for models with many distinct probabilities and for iterative numeric algorithms like value iteration. In this paper, we present a new "symblicit" approach to checking Markov chains and related probabilistic models: We first generate a decision diagram that symbolically collects all reachable states and their predecessors. We then concretise states one-by-one into an explicit partial state space representation. Whenever all predecessors of a state have been concretised, we eliminate it from the explicit state space in a way that preserves all relevant probabilities and rewards. We thus keep few explicit states in memory at any time. Experiments show that very large models can be model-checked in this way with very low memory consumption

    Modeling and verifying the FlexRay physical layer protocol with reachability checking of timed automata

    In this thesis, I report on the verification of the resilience of the FlexRay automotive bus protocol's physical layer protocol against glitches during message transmission and drifting clocks. This entailed modeling a significant part of this industrially used communictation protocol and the underlying hardware as well as the possible error scenarios in fine detail. Verifying such a complex model with model-checking led me to the development of data-structures and algorithms able to handle the associated complexity using only reasonable resources. This thesis presents such data-structures and algorithms for reachability checking of timed automata. It also present modeling principles enabling the construction of timed automata models that can be efficiently checked, as well as the models arrived at. Finally, it reports on the verified resilience of FlexRay's physical layer protocol against specific patterns of glitches under varying assumptions about the underlying hardware, like clock drift.In dieser Dissertation berichte ich über den Nachweis der Resilienz des Bitübertragungsprotokolls für die physikalische Schicht des FlexRay-Fahrzeugbusprotokolls gegenüber Übertragungsfehlern und Uhrenverschiebung. Dafür wurde es notwendig, einen signifikanten Teil dieses industriell genutzten Kommunikationsprotokolls mit seiner Hardwareumgebung und die möglichen Fehlerszenarien detailliert zu modellieren. Ein so komplexes Modell mittels Modellprüfung zu überprüfen führte mich zur Entwicklung von Datenstrukturen und Algorithmen, die die damit verbundene Komplexität mit vernünftigen Ressourcenanforderungen bewältigen können. Diese Dissertation stellt solche Datenstrukturen und Algorithmen zur Erreichbarkeitsprüfung gezeiteter Automaten vor. Sie stellt auch Modellierungsprinzipien vor, die es ermöglichen, Modelle in Form gezeiteter Automaten zu konstruieren, die effizient überprüft werden können, sowie die erstellten Modelle.     Control design for hybrid systems with TuLiP: The Temporal Logic Planning toolbox

    This tutorial describes TuLiP, the Temporal Logic Planning toolbox, a collection of tools for designing controllers for hybrid systems from specifications in temporal logic. The tools support a workflow that starts from a description of desired behavior, and of the system to be controlled. The system can have discrete state, or be a hybrid dynamical system with a mixed discrete and continuous state space. The desired behavior can be represented with temporal logic and discrete transition systems. The system description can include uncontrollable variables that take discrete or continuous values, and represent disturbances and other environmental factors that affect the dynamics, as well as communication signals that affect controller decisions

    ALPACAS: A Language for Parametric Assessment of Critical Architecture Safety

    This paper introduces Alpacas, a domain-specific language and algorithms aimed at architecture modeling and safety assessment for critical systems. It allows to study the effects of random and systematic faults on complex critical systems and their reliability. The underlying semantic framework of the language is Stochastic Guarded Transition Systems, for which Alpacas provides a feature-rich declarative modeling language and algorithms for symbolic analysis and Monte-Carlo simulation, allowing to compute safety indicators such as minimal cutsets and reliability. Built as a domain-specific language deeply embedded in Scala 3, Alpacas offers generic modeling capabilities and type-safety unparalleled in other existing safety assessment frameworks. This improved expressive power allows to address complex system modeling tasks, such as formalizing the architectural design space of a critical function, and exploring it to identify the most reliable variant. The features and algorithms of Alpacas are illustrated on a case study of a thrust allocation and power dispatch system for an electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft

    Formal verification of automotive embedded UML designs

    Software applications are increasingly dominating safety critical domains. Safety critical domains are domains where the failure of any application could impact human lives. Software application safety has been overlooked for quite some time but more focus and attention is currently directed to this area due to the exponential growth of software embedded applications. Software systems have continuously faced challenges in managing complexity associated with functional growth, flexibility of systems so that they can be easily modified, scalability of solutions across several product lines, quality and reliability of systems, and finally the ability to detect defects early in design phases. AUTOSAR was established to develop open standards to address these challenges. ISO-26262, automotive functional safety standard, aims to ensure functional safety of automotive systems by providing requirements and processes to govern software lifecycle to ensure safety. Each functional system needs to be classified in terms of safety goals, risks and Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL: A, B, C and D) with ASIL D denoting the most stringent safety level. As risk of the system increases, ASIL level increases and the standard mandates more stringent methods to ensure safety. ISO-26262 mandates that ASILs C and D classified systems utilize walkthrough, semi-formal verification, inspection, control flow analysis, data flow analysis, static code analysis and semantic code analysis techniques to verify software unit design and implementation. Ensuring software specification compliance via formal methods has remained an academic endeavor for quite some time. Several factors discourage formal methods adoption in the industry. One major factor is the complexity of using formal methods. Software specification compliance in automotive remains in the bulk heavily dependent on traceability matrix, human based reviews, and testing activities conducted on either actual production software level or simulation level. ISO26262 automotive safety standard recommends, although not strongly, using formal notations in automotive systems that exhibit high risk in case of failure yet the industry still heavily relies on semi-formal notations such as UML. The use of semi-formal notations makes specification compliance still heavily dependent on manual processes and testing efforts. In this research, we propose a framework where UML finite state machines are compiled into formal notations, specification requirements are mapped into formal model theorems and SAT/SMT solvers are utilized to validate implementation compliance to specification. The framework will allow semi-formal verification of AUTOSAR UML designs via an automated formal framework backbone. This semi-formal verification framework will allow automotive software to comply with ISO-26262 ASIL C and D unit design and implementation formal verification guideline. Semi-formal UML finite state machines are automatically compiled into formal notations based on Symbolic Analysis Laboratory formal notation. Requirements are captured in the UML design and compiled automatically into theorems. Model Checkers are run against the compiled formal model and theorems to detect counterexamples that violate the requirements in the UML model. Semi-formal verification of the design allows us to uncover issues that were previously detected in testing and production stages. The methodology is applied on several automotive systems to show how the framework automates the verification of UML based designs, the de-facto standard for automotive systems design, based on an implicit formal methodology while hiding the cons that discouraged the industry from using it. Additionally, the framework automates ISO-26262 system design verification guideline which would otherwise be verified via human error prone approaches

    Symbolic Supervisory Control of Resource Allocation Systems

    <p>Supervisory control theory (SCT) is a formal model-based methodology for verification and synthesis of supervisors for discrete event systems (DES). The main goal is to guarantee that the closed-loop system fulfills given specifications. SCT has great promise to assist engineers with the generation of reliable control functions. This is, for instance, beneficial to manufacturing systems where both products and production equipment might change frequently.</p> <p>The industrial acceptance of SCT, however, has been limited for at least two reasons: (i) the analysis of DES involves an intrinsic difficulty known as the state-space explosion problem, which makes the explicit enumeration of enormous state-spaces for industrial systems intractable; (ii) the synthesized supervisor, represented as a deterministic finite automaton (FA) or an extended finite automaton (EFA), is not straightforward to implement in an industrial controller.</p> <p>In this thesis, to address the aforementioned issues, we study the modeling, synthesis and supervisor representation of DES using binary decision diagrams (BDDs), a compact data structure for representing DES models symbolically. We propose different kinds of BDD-based algorithms for exploring the symbolically represented state-spaces in an effort to improve the abilities of existing supervisor synthesis approaches to handle large-scale DES and represent the obtained supervisors appropriately.</p> <p>Following this spirit, we bring the efficiencies of BDD into a particular DES application domain -- deadlock avoidance for resource allocation systems (RAS) -- a problem that arises in many technological systems including flexible manufacturing systems and multi-threaded software. We propose a framework for the effective and computationally efficient development of the maximally permissive deadlock avoidance policy (DAP) for various RAS classes. Besides the employment of symbolic computation, special structural properties that are possessed by RAS are utilized by the symbolic algorithms to gain additional efficiencies in the computation of the sought DAP. Furthermore, to bridge the gap between the BDD-based representation of the target DAP and its actual industrial realization, we extend this work by introducing a procedure that generates a set of "guard" predicates to represent the resulting DAP.</p> <p>The work presented in this thesis has been implemented in the SCT tool Supremica. Computational benchmarks have manifested the superiority of the proposed algorithms with respect to the previously published results. Hence, the work holds a strong potential for providing robust, practical and efficient solutions to a broad range of supervisory control and deadlock avoidance problems that are experienced in the considered DES application domain.</p
