Unfolding the procedure of characterizing recorded ultra low frequency, kHZ and MHz electromagetic anomalies prior to the L'Aquila earthquake as pre-seismic ones. Part I
Ultra low frequency, kHz and MHz electromagnetic anomalies were recorded
prior to the L'Aquila catastrophic earthquake that occurred on April 6, 2009.
The main aims of this contribution are: (i) To suggest a procedure for the
designation of detected EM anomalies as seismogenic ones. We do not expect to
be possible to provide a succinct and solid definition of a pre-seismic EM
emission. Instead, we attempt, through a multidisciplinary analysis, to provide
elements of a definition. (ii) To link the detected MHz and kHz EM anomalies
with equivalent last stages of the L'Aquila earthquake preparation process.
(iii) To put forward physically meaningful arguments to support a way of
quantifying the time to global failure and the identification of distinguishing
features beyond which the evolution towards global failure becomes
irreversible. The whole effort is unfolded in two consecutive parts. We clarify
we try to specify not only whether or not a single EM anomaly is pre-seismic in
itself, but mainly whether a combination of kHz, MHz, and ULF EM anomalies can
be characterized as pre-seismic one
Enhanced LFR-toolbox for MATLAB and LFT-based gain scheduling
We describe recent developments and enhancements of the LFR-Toolbox for MATLAB for building LFT-based uncertainty models and for LFT-based gain scheduling. A major development is the new LFT-object definition supporting a large class of uncertainty descriptions: continuous- and discrete-time uncertain models, regular and singular parametric expressions, more general uncertainty blocks (nonlinear, time-varying, etc.). By associating names to uncertainty blocks the reusability of generated LFT-models and the user friendliness of manipulation of LFR-descriptions have been highly increased. Significant enhancements of the computational efficiency and of numerical accuracy have been achieved by employing efficient and numerically robust Fortran implementations of order reduction tools via mex-function interfaces. The new enhancements in conjunction with improved symbolical preprocessing lead generally to a faster generation of LFT-models with significantly lower orders. Scheduled gains can be viewed as LFT-objects. Two techniques for designing such gains are presented. Analysis tools are also considered
A New Method for Computing Topological Pressure
The topological pressure introduced by Ruelle and similar quantities describe
dynamical multifractal properties of dynamical systems. These are important
characteristics of mesoscopic systems in the classical regime. Original
definition of these quantities are based on the symbolic description of the
dynamics. It is hard or impossible to find symbolic description and generating
partition to a general dynamical system, therefore these quantities are often
not accessible for further studies. Here we present a new method by which the
symbolic description can be omitted. We apply the method for a mixing and an
intermittent system.Comment: 8 pages LaTeX with revtex.sty, the 4 postscript figures are included

Multifractality of the Feigenbaum attractor and fractional derivatives
It is shown that fractional derivatives of the (integrated) invariant measure
of the Feigenbaum map at the onset of chaos have power-law tails in their
cumulative distributions, whose exponents can be related to the spectrum of
singularities . This is a new way of characterizing multifractality
in dynamical systems, so far applied only to multifractal random functions
(Frisch and Matsumoto (J. Stat. Phys. 108:1181, 2002)). The relation between
the thermodynamic approach (Vul, Sinai and Khanin (Russian Math. Surveys 39:1,
1984)) and that based on singularities of the invariant measures is also
examined. The theory for fractional derivatives is developed from a heuristic
point view and tested by very accurate simulations.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures, J.Stat.Phys. in pres
Geodesic length spectrum on compact Riemann surfaces
In this paper we use techniques linking combinatorial structures (symbolic dynamics)
and algebraic-geometric structures to study the variation of the geodesic
length spectrum, with the Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates, which parametrize the surface
of genus τ = 2. We explicitly compute length spectra, for all closed orientable
hyperbolic genus two surfaces, identifying the exponential growth rate and the first
terms of growth series
