    Dual Output Power Management Unit for PV-Battery Hybrid Energy System

    The tremendous evolution in the electronics industry has provided high performance portable devices. However, the high power demand and the limited capacity of batteries, prevent the devices from operating for a long time without the need of a power outlet. The ease of deploying Photovoltaic (PV) cells close to the device enables the user to harvest energy on the go, and get rid of the conventional power outlets. However, applying the PV power to the electronic devices is not as easy as the plug and play model, due to the unstable output voltage and power of the PV cells. In this thesis, a power management unit is proposed to provide dual regulated outputs using a PV module and a rechargeable battery. The main components of the unit are a Dual Input Multiple Output (DIMO) DC-DC converter and a digital controller. The converter is used to interface the battery and the PV module with the loads. Moreover, the proposed converter has the ability to step up or step down the input voltage. The controller maximizes the PV power using the fractional open circuit voltage Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) method. Furthermore, the controller manages the amount of power supplied to or from the battery in order to satisfy the load demand and regulate the outputs at the required levels. The controller has been implemented and synthesized using VHDL. A prototype has been implemented using an FPGA and off the shelf components. The functionality of the system has been tested and verified under varying environmental conditions

    Isolated Single-stage Power Electronic Building Blocks Using Medium Voltage Series-stacked Wide-bandgap Switches

    The demand for efficient power conversion systems that can process the energy at high power and voltage levels is increasing every day. These systems are to be used in microgrid applications. Wide-bandgap semiconductor devices (i.e. Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Gallium Nitride (GaN) devices) are very promising candidates due to their lower conduction and switching losses compared to the state-of-the-art Silicon (Si) devices. The main challenge for these devices is that their breakdown voltages are relatively lower compared to their Si counterpart. In addition, the high frequency operation of the wide-bandgap devices are impeded in many cases by the magnetic core losses of the magnetic coupling components (i.e. coupled inductors and/or high frequency transformers) utilized in the power converter circuit. Six new dc-dc converter topologies are propose. The converters have reduced voltage stresses on the switches. Three of them are unidirectional step-up converters with universal input voltage which make them excellent candidates for photovoltaic and fuel cell applications. The other three converters are bidirectional dc-dc converters with wide voltage conversion ratios. These converters are very good candidates for the applications that require bidirectional power flow capability. In addition, the wide voltage conversion ratios of these converters can be utilized for applications such as energy storage systems with wide voltage swings

    MODELING AND CONTROL OF DIRECT-CONVERSION HYBRID SWITCHED-CAPACITOR DC-DC CONVERTERS

    Efficient power delivery is increasingly important in modern computing, communications, consumer and other electronic systems, due to the high power demand and thermal concerns accompanied by performance advancements and tight packaging. In pursuit of high efficiency, small physical volume, and flexible regulation, hybrid switched-capacitor topologies have emerged as promising candidates for such applications. By incorporating both capacitors and inductors as energy storage elements, hybrid topologies achieve high power density while still maintaining soft charging and efficient regulation characteristics. However, challenges exist in the hybrid approach. In terms of reliability, each flying capacitor should be maintained at a nominal `balanced\u27 voltage for robust operation (especially during transients and startup), complicating the control system design. In terms of implementation, switching devices in hybrid converters often need complex gate driving circuits which add cost, area, and power consumption. This dissertation explores techniques that help to mitigate the aforementioned challenges. A discrete-time state space model is derived by treating the hybrid converter as two subsystems, the switched-capacitor stage and the output filter stage. This model is then used to design an estimator that extracts all flying capacitor voltages from the measurement of a single node. The controllability and observability of the switched-capacitor stage reveal the fundamental cause of imbalance at certain conversion ratios. A new switching sequence, the modified phase-shifted pulse width modulation, is developed to enable natural balance in originally imbalanced scenarios. Based on the model, a novel control algorithm, constant switch stress control, is proposed to achieve both output voltage regulation and active balance with fast dynamics. Finally, the design technique and test result of an integrated hybrid switched-capacitor converter are reported. A proposed gate driving strategy eliminates the need for external driving supplies and reduces the bootstrap capacitor area. On-chip mixed signal control ensures fast balancing dynamics and makes hard startup tolerable. This prototype achieves 96.9\% peak efficiency at 5V:1.2V conversion and a startup time of 12μs\mu s, which is over 100 times faster than the closest prior art. With the modeling, control, and design techniques introduced in this dissertation, the application of hybrid switched-capacitor converters may be extended to scenarios that were previously challenging for them, allowing enhanced performance compared to using traditional topologies. For problems that may require future attention, this dissertation also points to possible directions for further improvements

New technologies for passives enable the integration of inductor based power converter together with the load in a single chip. Due to the complexity of the system and various constraints, multi-variable optimization needs to be employed. This study presents an energy-based piece-wise linear model for switches losses estimation for 40 nm automotive approved semiconductor technology used for implementation of PwrSoC buck converter system. The model, based on discrete number of calculations performed with Spice simulations, is presented in detail in this study and it is validated experimentally

    Multiport DC-DC Converters for Hybrid Energy Systems

    Renewable energy sources (RESs) like solar and wind have gained attention for their potential to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and mitigate climate change. However, integrating multiple RESs into a power grid is challenging due to their unpredictable nature. Power electronic converters can manage hybrid energy systems by controlling power flow between RESs, storages, and the grid. Conventional single input dc-dc converters have limitations such as low efficiency, bulky designs, and complex control systems. Multiport dc-dc converters (MPCs) have emerged as a solution for hybridizing multiple sources, storages, and load systems by providing a common interface. Existing MPCs have limitations such as high component count, limited operational range, complex control strategies and restrictions on the number of inputs to list a few. Thus, there is a need to develop new MPCs that combine the advantages of existing designs while overcoming their limitations. Isolated MPCs with unipolar or bipolar outputs are needed that can accommodate any number of inputs, offer high voltage gain, use fixed magnetic components for galvanic isolation (regardless of the number of ports), and have a simplified control strategy. Additionally, new non-isolated MPCs with unipolar or bipolar outputs are required, featuring reduced component count, simultaneous power transfer and power flow between input ports, high voltage gain, low control complexity, and modular design allowing for arbitrary increase in the number of input ports. There is also an opportunity to apply MPCs in the integration of RESs and storages to ac grids through multilevel inverters for low component count, high efficiency, low harmonics, and higher power density.
