Advances In Internal Model Principle Control Theory
In this thesis, two advanced implementations of the internal model principle (IMP) are presented. The first is the identification of exponentially damped sinusoidal (EDS) signals with unknown parameters which are widely used to model audio signals. This application is developed in discrete time as a signal processing problem. An IMP based adaptive algorithm is developed for estimating two EDS parameters, the damping factor and frequency. The stability and convergence of this adaptive algorithm is analyzed based on a discrete time two time scale averaging theory. Simulation results demonstrate the identification performance of the proposed algorithm and verify its stability.
The second advanced implementation of the IMP control theory is the rejection of disturbances consisting of both predictable and unpredictable components. An IMP controller is used for rejecting predictable disturbances. But the phase lag introduced by the IMP controller limits the rejection capability of the wideband disturbance controller, which is used for attenuating unpredictable disturbance, such as white noise. A combination of open and closed-loop control strategy is presented. In the closed-loop mode, both controllers are active. Once the tracking error is insignificant, the input to the IMP controller is disconnected while its output control action is maintained. In the open loop mode, the wideband disturbance controller is made more aggressive for attenuating white noise. Depending on the level of the tracking error, the input to the IMP controller is connected intermittently. Thus the system switches between open and closed-loop modes.
A state feedback controller is designed as the wideband disturbance controller in this application. Two types of predictable disturbances are considered, constant and periodic. For a constant disturbance, an integral controller, the simplest IMP controller, is used. For a periodic disturbance with unknown frequencies, adaptive IMP controllers are used to estimate the frequencies before cancelling the disturbances. An extended multiple Lyapunov functions (MLF) theorem is developed for the stability analysis of this intermittent control strategy. Simulation results justify the optimal rejection performance of this switched control by comparing with two other traditional controllers
SARAS 2: A Spectral Radiometer for probing Cosmic Dawn and the Epoch of Reionization through detection of the global 21 cm signal
The global 21 cm signal from Cosmic Dawn (CD) and the Epoch of Reionization
(EoR), at redshifts , probes the nature of first sources of
radiation as well as physics of the Inter-Galactic Medium (IGM). Given that the
signal is predicted to be extremely weak, of wide fractional bandwidth, and
lies in a frequency range that is dominated by Galactic and Extragalactic
foregrounds as well as Radio Frequency Interference, detection of the signal is
a daunting task. Critical to the experiment is the manner in which the sky
signal is represented through the instrument. It is of utmost importance to
design a system whose spectral bandpass and additive spurious can be well
calibrated and any calibration residual does not mimic the signal. SARAS is an
ongoing experiment that aims to detect the global 21 cm signal. Here we present
the design philosophy of the SARAS 2 system and discuss its performance and
limitations based on laboratory and field measurements. Laboratory tests with
the antenna replaced with a variety of terminations, including a network model
for the antenna impedance, show that the gain calibration and modeling of
internal additives leave no residuals with Fourier amplitudes exceeding 2~mK,
or residual Gaussians of 25 MHz width with amplitudes exceeding 2~mK. Thus,
even accounting for reflection and radiation efficiency losses in the antenna,
the SARAS~2 system is capable of detection of complex 21-cm profiles at the

A single antenna ambient noise cancellation method for in-situ radiated EMI measurements in the time-domain
This paper presents a single antenna ambient noise cancellation method for in-situ radiated emissions measurements performed using an entirely time-domain approach and the sliding window Empirical Mode Decomposition. The method requires a pair of successive measurements, an initial one for characterizing the ambient noise and a final one for the EMI measurement in the presence of ambient noise. The method assumes the spectral content of the ambient noise is stable between both measurements. The measured time-domain EMI is decomposed into a finite set of intrinsic mode functions. Some modes contain the ambient noise signals while other modes contain the actual components of the EMI. A brute-force search algorithm determines which mode, or combination of modes, maximize the absolute difference between the magnitude of their spectrum and the ambient noise levels for every frequency bin in the measurement bandwidth. Experimental results show the
effectiveness of this method for attenuating several ambient noise signals in the 30 MHz – 1 GHz band.Postprint (published version
A 400-to-900 MHz Receiver with Dual-domain Harmonic Rejection Exploiting Adaptive Interference Cancellation
Wideband direct-conversion harmonic-rejection (HR) receivers for software-defined radio aim to remove or relax the pre-mixer RF filters, which are inflexible, bulky and costly [1,2]. HR schemes derived from [3] are often used, but amplitude and phase mismatches limit HR to between 30 and 40dB [1,2]. A quick calculation shows that much more rejection is wanted: in order to bring harmonic responses down to the noise floor (e.g. −100dBm in 10MHz for 4dB NF), and cope with interferers between −40 and 0dBm, an HR of 60 to 100dB is needed. Also in terrestrial TV receivers and in applications like DVB-H with co-existence requirements with GSM/WLAN transmitters in a small telephone, high HR is needed
Online identification and nonlinear control of the electrically stimulated quadriceps muscle
A new approach for estimating nonlinear models of the electrically stimulated quadriceps muscle group under nonisometric conditions is investigated. The model can be used for designing controlled neuro-prostheses. In order to identify the muscle dynamics (stimulation pulsewidth-active knee moment relation) from discrete-time angle measurements only, a hybrid model structure is postulated for the shank-quadriceps dynamics. The model consists of a relatively well known time-invariant passive component and an uncertain time-variant active component. Rigid body dynamics, described by the Equation of Motion (EoM), and passive joint properties form the time-invariant part. The actuator, i.e. the electrically stimulated muscle group, represents the uncertain time-varying section. A recursive algorithm is outlined for identifying online the stimulated quadriceps muscle group. The algorithm requires EoM and passive joint characteristics to be known a priori. The muscle dynamics represent the product of a continuous-time nonlinear activation dynamics and a nonlinear static contraction function described by a Normalised Radial Basis Function (NRBF) network which has knee-joint angle and angular velocity as input arguments. An Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) approach is chosen to estimate muscle dynamics parameters and to obtain full state estimates of the shank-quadriceps dynamics simultaneously. The latter is important for implementing state feedback controllers. A nonlinear state feedback controller using the backstepping method is explicitly designed whereas the model was identified a priori using the developed identification procedure
Simulation of Multi-element Antenna Systems for Navigation Applications
The application of user terminals with multiple antenna inputs for use with the global satellite navigation systems like GPS and Galileo becomes more and more attraction in last years. Multiple antennas may be spread over the user platform and provide signals required for the platform attitude estimation or may be arranged in an antenna array to be used together with array processing algorithms for improving signal reception, e.g. for multipath and interference mitigation. In order to generate signals for testing of receivers with multiple antenna inputs and corresponding receiver algorithms in a laboratory environment a unique HW signal simulation tool for wavefront simulation has been developed. The signals for a number of antenna elements in a flexible user defined geometry are first generated as digital signals in baseband and then mixed up to individual RF-outputs. The paper describes the principle function of the system and addresses some calibration issues. Measurement set-ups and results of data processing with simulated signals for different applications are shown and discussed
Performance of two Askaryan Radio Array stations and first results in the search for ultra-high energy neutrinos
Ultra-high energy neutrinos are interesting messenger particles since, if
detected, they can transmit exclusive information about ultra-high energy
processes in the Universe. These particles, with energies above
, interact very rarely. Therefore, detectors that
instrument several gigatons of matter are needed to discover them. The ARA
detector is currently being constructed at South Pole. It is designed to use
the Askaryan effect, the emission of radio waves from neutrino-induced cascades
in the South Pole ice, to detect neutrino interactions at very high energies.
With antennas distributed among 37 widely-separated stations in the ice, such
interactions can be observed in a volume of several hundred cubic kilometers.
Currently 3 deep ARA stations are deployed in the ice of which two have been
taking data since the beginning of the year 2013. In this publication, the ARA
detector "as-built" and calibrations are described. Furthermore, the data
reduction methods used to distinguish the rare radio signals from overwhelming
backgrounds of thermal and anthropogenic origin are presented. Using data from
only two stations over a short exposure time of 10 months, a neutrino flux
limit of is
calculated for a particle energy of 10^{18}eV, which offers promise for the
