    Get PDF
Blockchain combined with 3D printing offers businesses untapped opportunities. Blockchain can help businesses overcome intellectual property and data security barriers, allowing them to take advantage of emerging 3D printing business models. Specifically, blockchain can facilitate local manufacturing and may lay the groundwork for new business models like industrial design marketplaces and shared factories. Businesses could also improve their value proposition by offering additional services around a printed part, improving value delivery, and offering less costly and more customized products that involve fewer risks. Blockchain could transform the way firms create, deliver, and capture value in 3D printing ecosystems.Chander Velu would like to acknowledge funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EP/R024367/1 and EP/K039598/1

    Get PDF
This thesis investigates the possibility to implement an agile space-use system in otherwise vacant spaces. To gain knowledge about the demand for office- and workspaces the Helsinki Metropolitan Area is researched. The Otaniemi campus of Aalto University is located inside this area and functions as a case study. Earlier research has identified a change in working habits and the upcoming of creative work fields, which give the required insights for further study. Through a series of expert interviews, conducted in 2012-2013, the current state-of-the-art in learning spaces is studied through which information is gathered about existing facilities within the University, as well as on the vacant spaces on the campus. The user perspective and the preferred future development is mapped out through a student survey, which enquires their opinions on the study environment and to gather their insights regarding the development of new learning spaces. Based on the acquired information a space-use system is developed. In accordance with the research findings a proposal is made to link the existing open work- and study facilities. The research shows that in order to optimize the use of such spaces and to create grounds for expansion of their services communication is essential. Improved communication about the available learning- and working facilities will allow the implementation of new types of flexibly usable workspaces

’Electrification in Peer-to-Peer Society – A New Narrative for Sustainable Futures’ is a time travel journey to a future when renewable energy, electrification, and a peer-to-peer ethos are intertwined. The use of fossil fuel resources is ending. An emission-free vision for 2050 is illustrated through four transformational scenarios: Radical Startups, Value-Driven Techemoths, Green Do-It-Yourself Engineers, and New Consciousness. The scenarios serve as testbeds for what kind of futures we want to live in. Futures have to be explored with a long perspective, but the decisions for preferred futures have to be made today. All major sectors in society have to be transformed to stay within the limits of the Paris climate goals. This book highlights results from the Neo-Carbon Energy project, addressing all those interested in future visions, societal changes and technological advances. It can also be used as teaching material, or as inspiration for concrete steps towards the post-fossil era and a carbonneutral circular economy – for governments, companies, and citizens
