    Energy-Efficient Softwarized Networks: A Survey

    With the dynamic demands and stringent requirements of various applications, networks need to be high-performance, scalable, and adaptive to changes. Researchers and industries view network softwarization as the best enabler for the evolution of networking to tackle current and prospective challenges. Network softwarization must provide programmability and flexibility to network infrastructures and allow agile management, along with higher control for operators. While satisfying the demands and requirements of network services, energy cannot be overlooked, considering the effects on the sustainability of the environment and business. This paper discusses energy efficiency in modern and future networks with three network softwarization technologies: SDN, NFV, and NS, introduced in an energy-oriented context. With that framework in mind, we review the literature based on network scenarios, control/MANO layers, and energy-efficiency strategies. Following that, we compare the references regarding approach, evaluation method, criterion, and metric attributes to demonstrate the state-of-the-art. Last, we analyze the classified literature, summarize lessons learned, and present ten essential concerns to open discussions about future research opportunities on energy-efficient softwarized networks.Comment: Accepted draft for publication in TNSM with minor updates and editin

    Will SDN be part of 5G?

    For many, this is no longer a valid question and the case is considered settled with SDN/NFV (Software Defined Networking/Network Function Virtualization) providing the inevitable innovation enablers solving many outstanding management issues regarding 5G. However, given the monumental task of softwarization of radio access network (RAN) while 5G is just around the corner and some companies have started unveiling their 5G equipment already, the concern is very realistic that we may only see some point solutions involving SDN technology instead of a fully SDN-enabled RAN. This survey paper identifies all important obstacles in the way and looks at the state of the art of the relevant solutions. This survey is different from the previous surveys on SDN-based RAN as it focuses on the salient problems and discusses solutions proposed within and outside SDN literature. Our main focus is on fronthaul, backward compatibility, supposedly disruptive nature of SDN deployment, business cases and monetization of SDN related upgrades, latency of general purpose processors (GPP), and additional security vulnerabilities, softwarization brings along to the RAN. We have also provided a summary of the architectural developments in SDN-based RAN landscape as not all work can be covered under the focused issues. This paper provides a comprehensive survey on the state of the art of SDN-based RAN and clearly points out the gaps in the technology.Comment: 33 pages, 10 figure

    Improved planning and resource management in next generation green mobile communication networks

    In upcoming years, mobile communication networks will experience a disruptive reinventing process through the deployment of post 5th Generation (5G) mobile networks. Profound impacts are expected on network planning processes, maintenance and operations, on mobile services, subscribers with major changes in their data consumption and generation behaviours, as well as on devices itself, with a myriad of different equipment communicating over such networks. Post 5G will be characterized by a profound transformation of several aspects: processes, technology, economic, social, but also environmental aspects, with energy efficiency and carbon neutrality playing an important role. It will represent a network of networks: where different types of access networks will coexist, an increasing diversity of devices of different nature, massive cloud computing utilization and subscribers with unprecedented data-consuming behaviours. All at greater throughput and quality of service, as unseen in previous generations. The present research work uses 5G new radio (NR) latest release as baseline for developing the research activities, with future networks post 5G NR in focus. Two approaches were followed: i) method re-engineering, to propose new mechanisms and overcome existing or predictably existing limitations and ii) concept design and innovation, to propose and present innovative methods or mechanisms to enhance and improve the design, planning, operation, maintenance and optimization of 5G networks. Four main research areas were addressed, focusing on optimization and enhancement of 5G NR future networks, the usage of edge virtualized functions, subscriber’s behavior towards the generation of data and a carbon sequestering model aiming to achieve carbon neutrality. Several contributions have been made and demonstrated, either through models of methodologies that will, on each of the research areas, provide significant improvements and enhancements from the planning phase to the operational phase, always focusing on optimizing resource management. All the contributions are retro compatible with 5G NR and can also be applied to what starts being foreseen as future mobile networks. From the subscriber’s perspective and the ultimate goal of providing the best quality of experience possible, still considering the mobile network operator’s (MNO) perspective, the different proposed or developed approaches resulted in optimization methods for the numerous problems identified throughout the work. Overall, all of such contributed individually but aggregately as a whole to improve and enhance globally future mobile networks. Therefore, an answer to the main question was provided: how to further optimize a next-generation network - developed with optimization in mind - making it even more efficient while, simultaneously, becoming neutral concerning carbon emissions. The developed model for MNOs which aimed to achieve carbon neutrality through CO2 sequestration together with the subscriber’s behaviour model - topics still not deeply focused nowadays – are two of the main contributions of this thesis and of utmost importance for post-5G networks.Nos próximos anos espera-se que as redes de comunicações móveis se reinventem para lá da 5ª Geração (5G), com impactos profundos ao nível da forma como são planeadas, mantidas e operacionalizadas, ao nível do comportamento dos subscritores de serviços móveis, e através de uma miríade de dispositivos a comunicar através das mesmas. Estas redes serão profundamente transformadoras em termos tecnológicos, económicos, sociais, mas também ambientais, sendo a eficiência energética e a neutralidade carbónica aspetos que sofrem uma profunda melhoria. Paradoxalmente, numa rede em que coexistirão diferentes tipos de redes de acesso, mais dispositivos, utilização massiva de sistema de computação em nuvem, e subscritores com comportamentos de consumo de serviços inéditos nas gerações anteriores. O trabalho desenvolvido utiliza como base a release mais recente das redes 5G NR (New Radio), sendo o principal focus as redes pós-5G. Foi adotada uma abordagem de "reengenharia de métodos” (com o objetivo de propor mecanismos para resolver limitações existentes ou previsíveis) e de “inovação e design de conceitos”, em que são apresentadas técnicas e metodologias inovadoras, com o principal objetivo de contribuir para um desenho e operação otimizadas desta geração de redes celulares. Quatro grandes áreas de investigação foram endereçadas, contribuindo individualmente para um todo: melhorias e otimização generalizada de redes pós-5G, a utilização de virtualização de funções de rede, a análise comportamental dos subscritores no respeitante à geração e consumo de tráfego e finalmente, um modelo de sequestro de carbono com o objetivo de compensar as emissões produzidas por esse tipo de redes que se prevê ser massiva, almejando atingir a neutralidade carbónica. Como resultado deste trabalho, foram feitas e demonstradas várias contribuições, através de modelos ou metodologias, representando em cada área de investigação melhorias e otimizações, que, todas contribuindo para o mesmo objetivo, tiveram em consideração a retro compatibilidade e aplicabilidade ao que se prevê que sejam as futuras redes pós 5G. Focando sempre na perspetiva do subscritor da melhor experiência possível, mas também no lado do operador de serviço móvel – que pretende otimizar as suas redes, reduzir custos e maximizar o nível de qualidade de serviço prestado - as diferentes abordagens que foram desenvolvidas ou propostas, tiveram como resultado a resolução ou otimização dos diferentes problemas identificados, contribuindo de forma agregada para a melhoria do sistema no seu todo, respondendo à questão principal de como otimizar ainda mais uma rede desenvolvida para ser extremamente eficiente, tornando-a, simultaneamente, neutra em termos de emissões de carbono. Das principais contribuições deste trabalho relevam-se precisamente o modelo de compensação das emissões de CO2, com vista à neutralidade carbónica e um modelo de análise comportamental dos subscritores, dois temas ainda pouco explorados e extremamente importantes em contexto de redes futuras pós-5G

    Advanced Sleep Modes to comply with delay constraints in energy efficient 5G networks

    3noThe staggering growth of mobile traffic fostered by the extensive spreading of 5G technology and massive Internet of Things (IoT) applications is leading to network densification, entailing a boost in network power consumption, with consequent higher operational cost for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and raising sustainability issues. To reduce energy consumption when the traffic is low, new BSs feature Advanced Sleep Modes (ASM) that allow to reduce the network energy consumption by gradually deactivating the BSs into progressively deeper sleep modes with lower power consumption. However, the deep sleep modes cause high reactivation delays that may jeopardize the Quality of Service.In this paper, focusing on the periods in which traffic is very low, we extensively investigate the potentiality of ASMs based operation in terms of the trade-off between energy saving and delay under different 5G scenarios and traffic loads.     Energy and cost management in shared heterogeneous network deployments

As a result, questions have been raised over the years about the energy consumption needs of the wireless telecommunication networks, their carbon dioxide emissions and their operational expenses. Aiming at meeting the high traffic demands with flat energy consumption and flat incurred expenses, mobile network operators (MNOs) have opted to improve their position (i) by deploying heterogeneous networks (HetNets), which are consisted of macrocell base stations (MBSs) and small cell base stations (SBSs) and (ii) by sharing their infrastructure. However, questions could be raised about the extend to which HetNet densification is of aid. Given that network planning is executed according to high traffic load volumes, BS underutilisation during low-traffic hours cannot be neglected. Similarly, the aggregated energy needs of multiple SBSs equals the ones of an energy hungry MBS, having thus a respectable share of the net energy consumption. In this context, a set of research opportunities have been identified. This thesis provides contribution toward the achievement of a greener and more cost efficient operation of HetNet deployments, where multiple stakeholders develop their activity and where energy support can have the form of various alternate schemes, including renewable energy (RE) sources. Depending on the network energy support, i.e., whether RE sources are used in the network or not, the main body of this thesis is divided in two research directions. The first part of the thesis uses the technology of switching off strategies in order to explore their efficiency in terms of both energy and costs in a HetNet. The HetNet is assumed to be a roaming-based cooperative activity of multiple MNOs that is powered exclusively by grid energy. A switching off and a cost allocation scheme are proposed, using as criteria the BS type, the BS load and the roaming cost for traffic offloading. The performance of the proposed schemes is evaluated with respect to energy efficiency, cost savings and fairness, using computer-based simulations. The second part of the thesis explores energy and cost management issues in energy harvesting (EH) HetNet deployments where EH-BSs use an EH system (EHS), an energy storage system (ESS) and the smart grid (SG) as energy procurement sources. The EH-HetNet is assumed a two-tier network deployment of EH-MBSs that are passively shared among an MNO set and EH-SBSs that are provided to MNOs by an infrastructure provider. Taking into consideration the infrastructure location and the variety of stakeholders involved in the network deployment, approaches of RE exchange (REE) are proposed as a cooperative RE sharing for the shared EH-MBSs, based on bankruptcy theory, and a non-cooperative, aggregator-assisted RE trading, based on double auctions, for the EH-SBSs. The performance of the proposed schemes is evaluated in terms of the hours of independence of the studied system from the SG, the fairness regulated by the provided solution and the economical payoffs extracted for the stakeholdersDurante los últimos años, se ha notado un aumento enorme del volumen de tráfico de datos, mientras que se espera un nuevo aumento en los próximos años. Como resultado, se han planteado preguntas sobre las necesidades de consumo de energía de las redes inalámbricas de telecomunicaciones, sus emisiones de dióxido de carbono y sus gastos operativos. Con el objetivo de satisfacer las altas demandas de tráfico con consumo de energía constante y con gastos incurridos constantes, además de utilizar soluciones basadas en la nube, los operadores de redes móviles (MNOs) han optado por mejorar su posición (i) desplegando redes heterogéneas (HetNets), que consisten en estaciones base de macro-células (MBSs) y estaciones base de células pequeñas (SBSs), y (ii) compartiendo su infraestructura. Sin embargo, podrían plantearse preguntas sobre hasta qué punto la densificación de una HetNet es de ayuda. Dado que la planificación de la red se ejecuta de acuerdo con los volúmenes de carga de tráfico más elevados, no se puede descuidar la subutilización de las estaciones base (BS) durante las horas de poco tráfico. De manera similar, las necesidades de energía agregadas de múltiples SBSs son iguales a las de una MBS que consume mucha energía, teniendo así una parte respetable del consumo neto de energía. En este contexto, se ha identificado un conjunto de oportunidades de investigación. Esta tesis contribuye al logro de una operación más ecológica y rentable de las implementaciones de HetNet, donde múltiples partes interesadas desarrollan su actividad y donde el apoyo energético puede tener la forma de varios esquemas alternativos, incluidas las fuentes de energía renovables (RE). Dependiendo del soporte de energía de red, es decir, si las fuentes de RE se usan en la red o no, el cuerpo principal de esta tesis se divide en dos direcciones de investigación. La primera parte de la tesis utiliza la tecnología de las estrategias de apagado con el objetivo de explorar su eficiencia en términos de energía y gastos en una HetNet. Se asume que la HetNet es una actividad cooperativa basada en la itinerancia de múltiples MNO que se alimenta exclusivamente de energía de la red. Se propone un esquema de desconexión y de asignación de costes, que utiliza como criterios el tipo de BS, la carga de BS y el coste de la itinerancia para la descarga de tráfico. El rendimiento de los esquemas propuestos se evalúa con respecto a la eficiencia energética, el ahorro de costes y la equidad, usando simulaciones en computadora. La segunda parte de la tesis explora los problemas de gestión de energía y de costes en las implementaciones de HetNet donde las estaciones base recolectan energía usando un sistema EH (EHS), un sistema de almacenamiento de energía (ESS) y la red eléctrica inteligente (SG) como sistemas de adquisición de energía. Se asume que el EH-HetNet es una implementación de redes de dos niveles donde los EH-MBSs se comparten pasivamente entre un conjunto de MNOs y EH-SBSs se proporcionan a los MNOs de un proveedor de infraestructura. Teniendo en cuenta la ubicación de la infraestructura y la variedad de partes interesadas e involucradas en el despliegue de la red, se proponen enfoques de intercambio de RE (REE) como un intercambio cooperativo de RE para los EH-MBS compartidos, basado en la teoría de bancarrota, y un no cooperativo comercio de RE para los EH-SBSs, que es asistido por un agregador y basado en las subastas dobles.     Softwarization in Future Mobile Networks and Energy Efficient Networks

    The data growth generated by pervasive mobile devices and the Internet of Things at the network edge (i.e., closer to mobile users), couple with the demand for ultra-low latency, requires high computation resources which are not available at the end-user device. This demands a new network design paradigm in order to handle user demands. As a remedy, a new MN network design paradigm has emerged, called Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), to enable low-latency and location-aware data processing at the network edge. MEC is based on network function virtualization (NFV) technology, where mobile network functions (NFs) that formerly existed in the evolved packet core (EPC) are moved to the access network [i.e., they are deployed on local cloud platforms in proximity to the base stations (BSs)]. In order to reap the full benefits of the virtualized infrastructure, the NFV technology shall be combined with intelligent mechanisms for handling network resources. Despite the potential benefits presented by MEC, energy consumption is a challenge due to the foreseen dense deployment of BSs empowered with computation capabilities.
