    Ultra-Wideband Wireless Channels - Estimation, Modeling and Material Characterization

    This licentiate thesis is focused on the characterization of ultra-wideband wireless channels. The thesis presents results on ultra-wideband communications as well as on the ultra-wideband characterization of materials. The communications related work consisted in the measurement and modeling of outdoor scenarios envisioned for infostation systems. By infostation, we mean a communication system covering a small area, i.e., ranging up to 20 m, where mobile users can pass by or stop while receiving large amounts of data in a short period of time. Considering the expected (but perhaps overly optimistic) 480 Mbps for UWB systems, it should be possible to download a complete DVD in roughly two minutes, which is something not realizable with any of the current wireless technologies. Channel models, commonly based on measurements, can be used to evaluate the performance of such systems. We therefore, we started by performing measurements at one of the scenarios where infostation systems can exist in the future, namely, petrol stations. The idealized model, was one that could correctly describe the continuous evolution of the channel impulse response for a moving user within the system’s range, and therefore it was deemed necessary to track the multipath components defining the impulse responses along a path of several meters. To solve this problem we designed a novel high-resolution scatterer detection method, which is described in Paper I, capable of tracking individual multipath components for a moving user by identifying the originating point scatterers in a two dimensional geometrical space. The same paper also gives insight on some properties of clusters of scatterers, such as their direction-selective radiated power. The scatterer detection method described in Paper I provided us with the required tools to create the channel model described in Paper II. The proposed channel model has a geometrical basis, i.e., each realization of the channel is based on a virtual map containing point scatterers that contribute to the impulse response by multipath components. Some of the particular characteristics of the model include non-stationary effects, such as shadowing and cluster’s visibility regions. At the end of Paper II, in a simple validation step, the output of the channel model showed a good match with the measured impulse responses. The second part of our work, documented in Paper III, consisted on the dielectric characterization of soil samples using microwave measurements. This project was made in cooperation with the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Analysis at Lund University, which had been developing research work on methane emissions from the wetlands in Zackenberg, Greenland. In recent years, a lot of attention has been put into the understanding of the methane emissions from soils, since methane is a greenhouse gas 20 times stronger than carbon dioxide. However, whereas the methane emissions from natural soils are well documented, the reason behind this effect is an open issue. The usage of microwave measurements to monitor soil samples, aims to address this problem by capturing the sub-surface changes in the soil during gas emissions. An experiment consisting on the monitoring of a soil sample was performed, and a good correlation was found between the variations of the microwave signals and the methane emissions. In addition, the soil dielectric constant was calculated, and from that, the volumetric fractions of the soil constituents which provided useful data for the elaboration of models to describe the gas emission triggering mechanisms. Based on this laboratory experiment, a complete soil monitoring system was created and is at the time of writing running at Zackenberg, Greenland

    A Survey of Air-to-Ground Propagation Channel Modeling for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

    In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), particularly for small UAVs, due to their affordable prices, ease of availability, and ease of operability. Existing and future applications of UAVs include remote surveillance and monitoring, relief operations, package delivery, and communication backhaul infrastructure. Additionally, UAVs are envisioned as an important component of 5G wireless technology and beyond. The unique application scenarios for UAVs necessitate accurate air-to-ground (AG) propagation channel models for designing and evaluating UAV communication links for control/non-payload as well as payload data transmissions. These AG propagation models have not been investigated in detail when compared to terrestrial propagation models. In this paper, a comprehensive survey is provided on available AG channel measurement campaigns, large and small scale fading channel models, their limitations, and future research directions for UAV communication scenarios

    Indoor wireless communications and applications

    Chapter 3 addresses challenges in radio link and system design in indoor scenarios. Given the fact that most human activities take place in indoor environments, the need for supporting ubiquitous indoor data connectivity and location/tracking service becomes even more important than in the previous decades. Specific technical challenges addressed in this section are(i), modelling complex indoor radio channels for effective antenna deployment, (ii), potential of millimeter-wave (mm-wave) radios for supporting higher data rates, and (iii), feasible indoor localisation and tracking techniques, which are summarised in three dedicated sections of this chapter

    Measurement-Based Modeling of Wireless Propagation Channels - MIMO and UWB

    Future wireless systems envision higher speeds and more reliable services but at the same time face challenges in terms of bandwidth being a limited resource. Two promising techniques that can provide an increased throughput without requiring additional bandwidth allocation are multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems and ultra-wideband (UWB) systems. However, the performance of such systems is highly dependent on the properties of the wireless propagation channel, and an understanding of the channel is therefore crucial in the design of future wireless systems. Examples of such systems covered by this thesis are wireless personal area networks (papers I and II), vehicle-to-vehicle communications (paper III), board-to-board communications inside computers (paper IV) and sensor networks for industrial applications (paper V). Typically, channel models are used to evaluate the performance of different transmission and reception schemes. Channel modeling is the focus of this thesis, which contains a collection of papers that analyze and model the behavior of MIMO and UWB propagation channels. Paper I investigates the fading characteristics of wireless personal area networks (PANs), networks that typically involve human influence close to the antenna terminals. Based on extensive channel measurements using irregular antenna arrays, typical properties of PAN propagation channels are discussed and a model for the complete fading of a single link is presented. Paper II extends the model from paper I to a complete MIMO channel model. The paper combines the classical LOS model for MIMO with results from paper I by prescribing different fading statistics and mean power at the different antenna elements. The model is verified against measurement data and the paper also provides a parameterization for an example of a PAN scenario. Paper III presents a geometry-based stochastic MIMO model for vehicle-to-vehicle communications. The most important propagation effects are discussed based on the results from extensive channel measurements, and the modeling approach is motivated by the non-stationary behavior of such channels. The model distinguishes between diffuse contributions and those stemming from interaction with significant objects in the propagation channel, and the observed fading characteristics of the latter are stochastically accounted for in the model. Paper IV gives a characterization of UWB propagation channels inside desktop computer chassis. By studying measurement results from two different computers, it is concluded that the propagation channel only shows minor differences for different computers and positions within the chassis. It is also found out that the interference power produced by the computer is limited to certain subbands, suggesting that multiband UWB systems are more suitable for this type of applications. Paper V describes a UWB channel model based on the first UWB measurements in an industrial environment. Analyzing results from two different factory halls, it is concluded that energy arrives at the receiver in clusters, which motivates the use of a classical multi-cluster model to describe the channel impulse response. Parts of the results from this paper were also used as input to the channel model in the IEEE 802.15.4a UWB standardization work. In summary, the work within this thesis leads to an increased understanding of the behavior of wireless propagation channels for MIMO and UWB systems. By providing three detailed simulation models, two for MIMO and one for UWB, it can thus contribute to a more efficient design of the wireless communications systems of tomorrow

    Extending TDL based non-WSSUS vehicle-to-everything channel model

    In den vergangenen Jahrzehnten haben drahtlose Kommunikationssysteme eine rasante Entwicklung durchgemacht und es wurden viele Untersuchungen durchgefĂŒhrt, seit Maxwell die Existenz von elektromagnetischer Wellen vorausgesagt hat. In den letzten Jahren hat die Forschung im Bereich der vehicle to X (V2X)-Kommunikation stetig zugenommen. V2X beschreibt die FĂ€higkeit, Daten zwischen einem Fahrzeug oder vehicle (V) und “allem” zu ĂŒbertragen. In Zukunft könnten Fahrzeuge mit ihrer Umgebung kommunizieren, um VerkehrsunfĂ€lle zu vermeiden und Staus zu verringern. Dazu werden sie ihr Geschwindigkeits- und Positionsdaten ĂŒber Ad-hoc-Fahrzeugnetze senden und empfangen können. Um die Verkehrssicherheit zu erhöhen, ist eine zuverlĂ€ssige Kommunikationsverbindung notwendig. Die grĂ¶ĂŸte Herausforderung bei der Fahrzeugkommunikation besteht darin, dass sich die Eigenschaften des Physical Layers aufgrund der inhĂ€renten MobilitĂ€t innerhalb des Kanals, der hohen Fahrzeuggeschwindigkeiten, der unterschiedlichen Antennenpositionen und der vielen Handover aufgrund kleinerer Zellen schnell Ă€ndern. Dies bringt eine Reihe von Herausforderungen in Bezug auf die Kanalcharakterisierung mit sich. Es handelt sich um einen Kanal mit starker Zeitvarianz und es treten viele ÜbergĂ€nge auf. Somit handelt es sich um einen nicht-stationĂ€rer (non-stationary) Kanal. Das Hauptziel dieser Untersuchung ist es, eine Methode zu finden, mit der der Kanal einer komplexen Umgebung in einer einfachen Form mit weniger strengen Beziehungen zur Geometrie dargestellt werden kann. Dabei werden die statistischen Eigenschaften Ă€hnlich der Messdaten beibehalten. In dieser Arbeit werden nichtstationĂ€re tapped delay line (TDL)-Modelle verwendet, um vehicle to infrastructure (V2I)-KanĂ€le zu beschreiben. Es wird eine neue Strategie zur Extraktion von TDL-Kanalmodellparametern aus Messdaten vorgeschlagen. Dieser Ansatz basiert auf einer bestehenden Methode zur Ableitung von Parametern fĂŒr ein TDLModell. Es wird gezeigt, dass mit einer anderen Methode zur Auswahl der Taps die Anzahl der Abgriffe, die zur Rekonstruktion der root mean square delay spread (RMS-DS) eines Kanals erforderlich sind, erheblich reduziert werden kann. Ein neuer Ansatz zur ĂŒberprĂŒfen der Korrektheit der Ableitung der Kanalmodellparameter wird aufgezeigt. Die DurchfĂŒhrbarkeit der Methode wird anhand von Channel Sounding Messungen bestĂ€tigt. In dieser Dissertation wird ein Generator zur Erzeugung von Kanalimpulsantworten entwickelt und das nichtstationĂ€re Verhalten der KanĂ€le durch die Verwendung eines ON/OFF-Prozesses beschrieben. Es werden Markov-Ketten unterschiedlicher Ordnung modelliert, um das nicht-stationĂ€re Verhalten besser zu erfassen. Die Untersuchung zeigt, dass Markov-Ketten erster Ordnung mit zwei ZustĂ€nden vorzuziehen sind, um das hĂ€ufige ON/OFF-Verhalten von Mehrwegpfaden darzustellen, und dass die Markov-Modelle zweiter und dritter Ordnung keine großen Auswirkungen haben. Eine Methode zur Erweiterung eines single input single output (SISO)-TDL-Modells auf multiple input multiple output (MIMO) unter der non-wide sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (non-WSSUS)-Annahme wird eingefĂŒhrt, um TDL-Kanalmodelle fĂŒr V2I MIMO-Systeme zu entwickeln. Die Analyse bewertet die SISO- mit der MIMO-Konfiguration in Bezug auf die KanalkapazitĂ€t. Es werden verschiedene MIMO-Konfigurationen untersucht, und es wird gezeigt, dass die Position der Antennen eine wichtige Rolle spielt. Die Verwendung von nur vier Antennen am transmitter (Tx) und receiver (Rx), die in unterschiedliche Richtungen abstrahlen, fĂŒhrt zu einem qualitativen Sprung in der LeistungsfĂ€higkeit des Systems.In the past decades, wireless communication systems have undergone rapid development, and many investigations have been done since Maxwell predicted the existence of electromagnetic waves. In recent years, vehicle to X (V2X) communication research has been growing steadily. V2X describes the ability to transmit data between a vehicle (V) and “everything”. In the future, vehicles might be able to communicate with their environment to prevent traffic accidents and reduce congestion by allowing vehicles to transmit and receive data through a vehicular ad hoc network at their speed and position. In order to achieve the ultimate goal of enhancing transportation safety, it is crucial to establish reliable communication links. The main challenge of vehicular communications introduces new properties because the physical layer properties are rapidly changing due to inherent mobility within the channel, high vehicle speeds, varying antenna positions, and many handovers due to smaller cells. This brings up a number of challenges in terms of channel characterization because it is a strong time-variant channel and many transitions occur; therefore, it is a non-stationary channel. In this thesis, non-stationary tapped delay line (TDL) models are used to describe the vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) channels. This thesis proposes a new strategy to extract TDL channel model parameters from measurement data. The proposed approach is based on an existing method to derive parameters for a TDL model. It will be shown that with a different method of choosing taps, the number of taps necessary to regenerate the root mean square delay spread (RMS-DS) of a channel can be significantly reduced. An approach is proposed to verify the correctness of the channel model parameters derivation. The feasibility of the method will be confirmed using channel-sounding measurements. This dissertation devises a generator to produce channel impulse responses (CIRs) and describes the non-stationary behavior of the channels via employing an ON/OFF process. Different order Markov chains are modeled with the aim of better capturing the non-stationary behavior. The investigation shows that first-order two-state Markov chains are preferable to represent multipath’s frequent ON/OFF behavior, and the second- and third-order Markov models do not make enormous effects. A method for extending a single input single output (SISO)-TDL model to multiple input multiple output (MIMO) under non-wide sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (non-WSSUS) assumption is introduced to develop TDL channel models for the V2I MIMO systems. The analysis evaluates SISO- with MIMO configuration in terms of channel capacity. Different MIMO configurations are explored, and it will be illustrated that the position of antennas plays an important role. Using only four antennas at the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) that radiate towards different directions will make a qualitative leap in the performance of the system

    Empirical multi-band characterization of propagation with modelling aspects for communictions

    Diese Arbeit prĂ€sentiert eine empirische Untersuchung der Wellenausbreitung fĂŒr drahtlose Kommunikation im Millimeterwellen- und sub-THz-Band, wobei als Referenz das bereits bekannte und untersuchte sub-6-GHz-Band verwendet wird. Die großen verfĂŒgbaren Bandbreiten in diesen hohen FrequenzbĂ€ndern erlauben die Verwendung hoher instantaner Bandbreiten zur ErfĂŒllung der wesentlichen Anforderungen zukĂŒnftiger Mobilfunktechnologien (5G, “5G and beyond” und 6G). Aufgrund zunehmender Pfad- und Eindringverluste bei zunehmender TrĂ€gerfrequenz ist die resultierende Abdeckung dabei jedoch stark reduziert. Die entstehenden Pfadverluste können durch die Verwendung hochdirektiver Funkschnittstellen kompensiert werden, wodurch die resultierende Auflösung im Winkelbereich erhöht wird und die Notwendigkeit einer rĂ€umlichen Kenntnis der Systeme mit sich bringt: Woher kommt das Signal? DarĂŒber hinaus erhöhen grĂ¶ĂŸere Anwendungsbandbreiten die Auflösung im Zeitbereich, reduzieren das small-scale Fading und ermöglichen die Untersuchung innerhalb von Clustern von Mehrwegekomponenten. Daraus ergibt sich fĂŒr Kommunikationssysteme ein vorhersagbareres Bild im Winkel-, Zeit- und Polarisationsbereich, welches Eigenschaften sind, die in Kanalmodellen fĂŒr diese Frequenzen widergespiegelt werden mĂŒssen. Aus diesem Grund wurde in der vorliegenden Arbeit eine umfassende Charakterisierung der Wellenausbreitung durch simultane Multibandmessungen in den sub-6 GHz-, Millimeterwellen- und sub-THz-BĂ€ndern vorgestellt. Zu Beginn wurde die Eignung des simultanen Multiband-Messverfahrens zur Charakterisierung der Ausbreitung von Grenzwert-Leistungsprofilen und large-scale Parametern bewertet. Anschließend wurden wichtige Wellenausbreitungsaspekte fĂŒr die Ein- und Multibandkanalmodellierung innerhalb mehrerer SĂ€ulen der 5G-Technologie identifiziert und Erweiterungen zu verbreiteten rĂ€umlichen Kanalmodellen eingefĂŒhrt und bewertet, welche die oben genannten Systemaspekte abdecken.This thesis presents an empirical characterization of propagation for wireless communications at mm-waves and sub-THz, taking as a reference the already well known and studied sub-6 GHz band. The large blocks of free spectrum available at these high frequency bands makes them particularly suitable to provide the necessary instantaneous bandwidths to meet the requirements of future wireless technologies (5G, 5G and beyond, and 6G). However, isotropic path-loss and penetration-loss are larger with increasing carrier frequency, hence, coverage is severely reduced. Path-loss can be compensated with the utilization of highly directive radio-interfaces, which increases the resolution in the angular domain. Nonetheless, this emphasizes the need of spatial awareness of systems, making more relevant the question “where does the signal come from?” In addition, larger application bandwidths increase the resolution in the time domain, reducing small-scale fading and allowing to observe inside of clusters of multi-path components (MPCs). Consequently, communication systems have a more deterministic picture of the environment in the angular, time, and polarization domain, characteristics that need to be reflected in channel models for these frequencies. Therefore, in the present work we introduce an extensive characterization of propagation by intensive simultaneous multi-band measurements in the sub-6 GHz, mm-waves, and sub-THz bands. Firstly, the suitability of the simultaneous multi-band measurement procedure to characterize propagation from marginal power profiles and large-scale parameters (LSPs) has been evaluated. Then, key propagation aspects for single and multi-band channel modelling in several verticals of 5G have been identified, and extensions to popular spatial channel models (SCMs) covering the aforementioned system aspects have been introduced and evaluated

    Millimeter wave propagation measurements and characteristics for 5G system

    In future 5G systems, the millimeter wave (mmWave) band will be used to support a large capacity for current mobile broadband. Therefore, the radio access technology (RAT) should be made available for 5G devices to help in distinct situations, for example device-to-device communications (D2D) and multi-hops. This paper presents ultra-wideband channel measurements for millimeter wave bands at 19, 28, and 38 GHz. We used an ultra-wideband channel sounder (1 GHz bandwidth) in an indoor to outdoor (I2O) environment for non-line-of-sight (NLOS) scenarios. In an NLOS environment, there is no direct path (line of sight), and all of the contributed paths are received from different physical objects by refection propagation phenomena. Hence, in this work, a directional horn antenna (high gain) was used at the transmitter, while an omnidirectional antenna was used at the receiver to collect the radio signals from all directions. The path loss and temporal dispersion were examined based on the acquired measurement data—the 5G propagation characteristics. Two different path loss models were used, namely close-in (CI) free space reference distance and alpha-beta-gamma (ABG) models. The time dispersion parameters were provided based on a mean excess delay, a root mean square (RMS) delay spread, and a maximum excess delay. The path loss exponent for this NLOS specific environment was found to be low for all of the proposed frequencies, and the RMS delay spread values were less than 30 ns for all of the measured frequencies, and the average RMS delay spread values were 19.2, 19.3, and 20.3 ns for 19, 28, and 38 GHz frequencies, respectively. Moreover, the mean excess delay values were found also at 26.1, 25.8, and 27.3 ns for 19, 28, and 38 GHz frequencies, respectively. The propagation signal through the NLOS channel at 19, 28, and 38 GHz was strong with a low delay; it is concluded that these bands are reliable for 5G systems in short-range applications

    Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Communication Networks for the Maritime Internet of Things: Key Technologies, Opportunities, and Challenges

    With the rapid development of marine activities, there has been an increasing number of maritime mobile terminals, as well as a growing demand for high-speed and ultra-reliable maritime communications to keep them connected. Traditionally, the maritime Internet of Things (IoT) is enabled by maritime satellites. However, satellites are seriously restricted by their high latency and relatively low data rate. As an alternative, shore & island-based base stations (BSs) can be built to extend the coverage of terrestrial networks using fourth-generation (4G), fifth-generation (5G), and beyond 5G services. Unmanned aerial vehicles can also be exploited to serve as aerial maritime BSs. Despite of all these approaches, there are still open issues for an efficient maritime communication network (MCN). For example, due to the complicated electromagnetic propagation environment, the limited geometrically available BS sites, and rigorous service demands from mission-critical applications, conventional communication and networking theories and methods should be tailored for maritime scenarios. Towards this end, we provide a survey on the demand for maritime communications, the state-of-the-art MCNs, and key technologies for enhancing transmission efficiency, extending network coverage, and provisioning maritime-specific services. Future challenges in developing an environment-aware, service-driven, and integrated satellite-air-ground MCN to be smart enough to utilize external auxiliary information, e.g., sea state and atmosphere conditions, are also discussed
