    Physical sketching tools and techniques for customized sensate surfaces

    Sensate surfaces are a promising avenue for enhancing human interaction with digital systems due to their inherent intuitiveness and natural user interface. Recent technological advancements have enabled sensate surfaces to surpass the constraints of conventional touchscreens by integrating them into everyday objects, creating interactive interfaces that can detect various inputs such as touch, pressure, and gestures. This allows for more natural and intuitive control of digital systems. However, prototyping interactive surfaces that are customized to users' requirements using conventional techniques remains technically challenging due to limitations in accommodating complex geometric shapes and varying sizes. Furthermore, it is crucial to consider the context in which customized surfaces are utilized, as relocating them to fabrication labs may lead to the loss of their original design context. Additionally, prototyping high-resolution sensate surfaces presents challenges due to the complex signal processing requirements involved. This thesis investigates the design and fabrication of customized sensate surfaces that meet the diverse requirements of different users and contexts. The research aims to develop novel tools and techniques that overcome the technical limitations of current methods and enable the creation of sensate surfaces that enhance human interaction with digital systems.Sensorische Oberflächen sind aufgrund ihrer inhärenten Intuitivität und natürlichen Benutzeroberfläche ein vielversprechender Ansatz, um die menschliche Interaktionmit digitalen Systemen zu verbessern. Die jüngsten technologischen Fortschritte haben es ermöglicht, dass sensorische Oberflächen die Beschränkungen herkömmlicher Touchscreens überwinden, indem sie in Alltagsgegenstände integriert werden und interaktive Schnittstellen schaffen, die diverse Eingaben wie Berührung, Druck, oder Gesten erkennen können. Dies ermöglicht eine natürlichere und intuitivere Steuerung von digitalen Systemen. Das Prototyping interaktiver Oberflächen, die mit herkömmlichen Techniken an die Bedürfnisse der Nutzer angepasst werden, bleibt jedoch eine technische Herausforderung, da komplexe geometrische Formen und variierende Größen nur begrenzt berücksichtigt werden können. Darüber hinaus ist es von entscheidender Bedeutung, den Kontext, in dem diese individuell angepassten Oberflächen verwendet werden, zu berücksichtigen, da eine Verlagerung in Fabrikations-Laboratorien zum Verlust ihres ursprünglichen Designkontextes führen kann. Zudem stellt das Prototyping hochauflösender sensorischer Oberflächen aufgrund der komplexen Anforderungen an die Signalverarbeitung eine Herausforderung dar.     Augmented Reality and Robotics: A Survey and Taxonomy for AR-enhanced Human-Robot Interaction and Robotic Interfaces

    This paper contributes to a taxonomy of augmented reality and robotics based on a survey of 460 research papers. Augmented and mixed reality (AR/MR) have emerged as a new way to enhance human-robot interaction (HRI) and robotic interfaces (e.g., actuated and shape-changing interfaces). Recently, an increasing number of studies in HCI, HRI, and robotics have demonstrated how AR enables better interactions between people and robots. However, often research remains focused on individual explorations and key design strategies, and research questions are rarely analyzed systematically. In this paper, we synthesize and categorize this research field in the following dimensions: 1) approaches to augmenting reality; 2) characteristics of robots; 3) purposes and benefits; 4) classification of presented information; 5) design components and strategies for visual augmentation; 6) interaction techniques and modalities; 7) application domains; and 8) evaluation strategies. We formulate key challenges and opportunities to guide and inform future research in AR and robotics

    Human-in-the-Loop Cyber Physical Systems: Modular Designs for Semi-Autonomous Wheelchair Navigation

    This project involves the design and development of a prototyping platform and open design framework for a semi-autonomous wheelchair to realize a human-in-the-loop cyber physical system as an assistive technology. The system is designed to assist physically locked-in individuals in navigating indoor environments through the use of modular sensor, communication, and control designs. This enables the user to share control with the wheelchair and allows the system to operate semi-autonomously with human-in-the-loop. The Wheelchair Add-on Modules (WAMs) developed for use in this project are platform-independent and facilitate development and application of semi- autonomous functionality

    Additive manufacturing (AM) or three-dimensional (3D) printing has introduced a novel production method in design, manufacturing, and distribution to end-users. This technology has provided great freedom in design for creating complex components, highly customizable products, and efficient waste minimization. The last industrial revolution, namely industry 4.0, employs the integration of smart manufacturing systems and developed information technologies. Accordingly, AM plays a principal role in industry 4.0 thanks to numerous benefits, such as time and material saving, rapid prototyping, high efficiency, and decentralized production methods. This review paper is to organize a comprehensive study on AM technology and present the latest achievements and industrial applications. Besides that, this paper investigates the sustainability dimensions of the AM process and the added values in economic, social, and environment sections. Finally, the paper concludes by pointing out the future trend of AM in technology, applications, and materials aspects that have the potential to come up with new ideas for the future of AM explorations

    TOWARD INTELLIGENT WELDING BY BUILDING ITS DIGITAL TWIN

    To meet the increasing requirements for production on individualization, efficiency and quality, traditional manufacturing processes are evolving to smart manufacturing with the support from the information technology advancements including cyber-physical systems (CPS), Internet of Things (IoT), big industrial data, and artificial intelligence (AI). The pre-requirement for integrating with these advanced information technologies is to digitalize manufacturing processes such that they can be analyzed, controlled, and interacted with other digitalized components. Digital twin is developed as a general framework to do that by building the digital replicas for the physical entities. This work takes welding manufacturing as the case study to accelerate its transition to intelligent welding by building its digital twin and contributes to digital twin in the following two aspects (1) increasing the information analysis and reasoning ability by integrating deep learning; (2) enhancing the human user operative ability to physical welding manufacturing via digital twins by integrating human-robot interaction (HRI). Firstly, a digital twin of pulsed gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW-P) is developed by integrating deep learning to offer the strong feature extraction and analysis ability. In such a system, the direct information including weld pool images, arc images, welding current and arc voltage is collected by cameras and arc sensors. The undirect information determining the welding quality, i.e., weld joint top-side bead width (TSBW) and back-side bead width (BSBW), is computed by a traditional image processing method and a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) respectively. Based on that, the weld joint geometrical size is controlled to meet the quality requirement in various welding conditions. In the meantime, this developed digital twin is visualized to offer a graphical user interface (GUI) to human users for their effective and intuitive perception to physical welding processes. Secondly, in order to enhance the human operative ability to the physical welding processes via digital twins, HRI is integrated taking virtual reality (VR) as the interface which could transmit the information bidirectionally i.e., transmitting the human commends to welding robots and visualizing the digital twin to human users. Six welders, skilled and unskilled, tested this system by completing the same welding job but demonstrate different patterns and resulted welding qualities. To differentiate their skill levels (skilled or unskilled) from their demonstrated operations, a data-driven approach, FFT-PCA-SVM as a combination of fast Fourier transform (FFT), principal component analysis (PCA), and support vector machine (SVM) is developed and demonstrates the 94.44% classification accuracy. The robots can also work as an assistant to help the human welders to complete the welding tasks by recognizing and executing the intended welding operations. This is done by a developed human intention recognition algorithm based on hidden Markov model (HMM) and the welding experiments show that developed robot-assisted welding can help to improve welding quality. To further take the advantages of the robots i.e., movement accuracy and stability, the role of the robot upgrades to be a collaborator from an assistant to complete a subtask independently i.e., torch weaving and automatic seam tracking in weaving GTAW. The other subtask i.e., welding torch moving along the weld seam is completed by the human users who can adjust the travel speed to control the heat input and ensure the good welding quality. By doing that, the advantages of humans (intelligence) and robots (accuracy and stability) are combined together under this human-robot collaboration framework. The developed digital twin for welding manufacturing helps to promote the next-generation intelligent welding and can be applied in other similar manufacturing processes easily after small modifications including painting, spraying and additive manufacturing
