    Shape-from-shading using the heat equation

    This paper offers two new directions to shape-from-shading, namely the use of the heat equation to smooth the field of surface normals and the recovery of surface height using a low-dimensional embedding. Turning our attention to the first of these contributions, we pose the problem of surface normal recovery as that of solving the steady state heat equation subject to the hard constraint that Lambert's law is satisfied. We perform our analysis on a plane perpendicular to the light source direction, where the z component of the surface normal is equal to the normalized image brightness. The x - y or azimuthal component of the surface normal is found by computing the gradient of a scalar field that evolves with time subject to the heat equation. We solve the heat equation for the scalar potential and, hence, recover the azimuthal component of the surface normal from the average image brightness, making use of a simple finite difference method. The second contribution is to pose the problem of recovering the surface height function as that of embedding the field of surface normals on a manifold so as to preserve the pattern of surface height differences and the lattice footprint of the surface normals. We experiment with the resulting method on a variety of real-world image data, where it produces qualitatively good reconstructed surfaces

    Geometric Variational Models for Inverse Problems in Imaging

    This dissertation develops geometric variational models for different inverse problems in imaging that are ill-posed, designing at the same time efficient numerical algorithms to compute their solutions. Variational methods solve inverse problems by the following two steps: formulation of a variational model as a minimization problem, and design of a minimization algorithm to solve it. This dissertation is organized in the same manner. It first formulates minimization problems associated with geometric models for different inverse problems in imaging, and it then designs efficient minimization algorithms to compute their solutions. The minimization problem summarizes both the data available from the measurements and the prior knowledge about the solution in its objective functional; this naturally leads to the combination of a measurement or data term and a prior term. Geometry can play a role in any of these terms, depending on the properties of the data acquisition system or the object being imaged. In this context, each chapter of this dissertation formulates a variational model that includes geometry in a different manner in the objective functional, depending on the inverse problem at hand. In the context of compressed sensing, the first chapter exploits the geometric properties of images to include an alignment term in the sparsity prior of compressed sensing; this additional prior term aligns the normal vectors of the level curves of the image with the reconstructed signal, and it improves the quality of reconstruction. A two-step recovery method is designed for that purpose: first, it estimates the normal vectors to the level curves of the image; second, it reconstructs an image matching the compressed sensing measurements, the geometric alignment of normals, and the sparsity constraint of compressed sensing. The proposed method is extended to non-local operators in graphs for the recovery of textures. The harmonic active contours of Chapter 2 make use of differential geometry to interpret the segmentation of an image as a minimal surface manifold. In this case, geometry is exploited in both the measurement term, by coupling the different image channels in a robust edge detector, and in the prior term, by imposing smoothness in the segmentation. The proposed technique generalizes existing active contours to higher dimensional spaces and non-flat images; in the plane, it improves the segmentation of images with inhomogeneities and weak edges. Shape-from-shading is investigated in Chapter 3 for the reconstruction of a silicon wafer from images of printed circuits taken with a scanning electron microscope. In this case, geometry plays a role in the image acquisition system, that is, in the measurement term of the objective functional. The prior term involves a smoothness constraint on the surface and a shape prior on the expected pattern in the circuit. The proposed reconstruction method also estimates a deformation field between the ideal pattern design and the reconstructed surface, substituting the model of shape variability necessary in shape priors with an elastic deformation field that quantifies deviations in the manufacturing process. Finally, the techniques used for the design of efficient numerical algorithms are explained with an example problem based on the level set method. To this purpose, Chapter 4 develops an efficient algorithm for the level set method when the level set function is constrained to remain a signed distance function. The distance function is preserved by the introduction of an explicit constraint in the minimization problem, the minimization algorithm is efficient by the adequate use of variable-splitting and augmented Lagrangian techniques. These techniques introduce additional variables, constraints, and Lagrange multipliers in the original minimization problem, and they decompose it into sub-optimization problems that are simple and can be efficiently solved. As a result, the proposed algorithm is five to six times faster than the original algorithm for the level set method

    Mass and Angular Momentum in General Relativity

    We present an introduction to mass and angular momentum in General Relativity. After briefly reviewing energy-momentum for matter fields, first in the flat Minkowski case (Special Relativity) and then in curved spacetimes with or without symmetries, we focus on the discussion of energy-momentum for the gravitational field. We illustrate the difficulties rooted in the Equivalence Principle for defining a local energy-momentum density for the gravitational field. This leads to the understanding of gravitational energy-momentum and angular momentum as non-local observables that make sense, at best, for extended domains of spacetime. After introducing Komar quantities associated with spacetime symmetries, it is shown how total energy-momentum can be unambiguously defined for isolated systems, providing fundamental tests for the internal consistency of General Relativity as well as setting the conceptual basis for the understanding of energy loss by gravitational radiation. Finally, several attempts to formulate quasi-local notions of mass and angular momentum associated with extended but finite spacetime domains are presented, together with some illustrations of the relations between total and quasi-local quantities in the particular context of black hole spacetimes. This article is not intended to be a rigorous and exhaustive review of the subject, but rather an invitation to the topic for non-experts. In this sense we follow essentially the expositions in Szabados 2004, Gourgoulhon 2007, Poisson 2004 and Wald 84, and refer the reader interested in further developments to the existing literature, in particular to the excellent and comprehensive review by Szabados (2004).Comment: 41 pages.     Geometric Structure Extraction and Reconstruction

    Geometric structure extraction and reconstruction is a long-standing problem in research communities including computer graphics, computer vision, and machine learning. Within different communities, it can be interpreted as different subproblems such as skeleton extraction from the point cloud, surface reconstruction from multi-view images, or manifold learning from high dimensional data. All these subproblems are building blocks of many modern applications, such as scene reconstruction for AR/VR, object recognition for robotic vision and structural analysis for big data. Despite its importance, the extraction and reconstruction of a geometric structure from real-world data are ill-posed, where the main challenges lie in the incompleteness, noise, and inconsistency of the raw input data. To address these challenges, three studies are conducted in this thesis: i) a new point set representation for shape completion, ii) a structure-aware data consolidation method, and iii) a data-driven deep learning technique for multi-view consistency. In addition to theoretical contributions, the algorithms we proposed significantly improve the performance of several state-of-the-art geometric structure extraction and reconstruction approaches, validated by extensive experimental results

    PCDNF: Revisiting Learning-based Point Cloud Denoising via Joint Normal Filtering

    Recovering high quality surfaces from noisy point clouds, known as point cloud denoising, is a fundamental yet challenging problem in geometry processing. Most of the existing methods either directly denoise the noisy input or filter raw normals followed by updating point positions. Motivated by the essential interplay between point cloud denoising and normal filtering, we revisit point cloud denoising from a multitask perspective, and propose an end-to-end network, named PCDNF, to denoise point clouds via joint normal filtering. In particular, we introduce an auxiliary normal filtering task to help the overall network remove noise more effectively while preserving geometric features more accurately. In addition to the overall architecture, our network has two novel modules. On one hand, to improve noise removal performance, we design a shape-aware selector to construct the latent tangent space representation of the specific point by comprehensively considering the learned point and normal features and geometry priors. On the other hand, point features are more suitable for describing geometric details, and normal features are more conducive for representing geometric structures (e.g., sharp edges and corners). Combining point and normal features allows us to overcome their weaknesses. Thus, we design a feature refinement module to fuse point and normal features for better recovering geometric information. Extensive evaluations, comparisons, and ablation studies demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-arts for both point cloud denoising and normal filtering
