Creative idea exploration within the structure of a guiding framework : the card brainstorming game
I present a card brainstorming exercise that transforms a conceptual tangible interaction framework into a tool for creative dialogue and discuss the experiences made in using it. Ten sessions with this card game demonstrate the frameworks' versatility and utility. Observation and participant feedback highlight the value of a provocative question format and of the metaphor of a card game
Overcoming Language Dichotomies: Toward Effective Program Comprehension for Mobile App Development
Mobile devices and platforms have become an established target for modern
software developers due to performant hardware and a large and growing user
base numbering in the billions. Despite their popularity, the software
development process for mobile apps comes with a set of unique, domain-specific
challenges rooted in program comprehension. Many of these challenges stem from
developer difficulties in reasoning about different representations of a
program, a phenomenon we define as a "language dichotomy". In this paper, we
reflect upon the various language dichotomies that contribute to open problems
in program comprehension and development for mobile apps. Furthermore, to help
guide the research community towards effective solutions for these problems, we

A semantic web approach for built heritage representation
In a built heritage process, meant as a structured system of activities
aimed at the investigation, preservation, and management of architectural
heritage, any task accomplished by the several actors involved in it is deeply
influenced by the way the knowledge is represented and shared. In the current
heritage practice, knowledge representation and management have shown several
limitations due to the difficulty of dealing with large amount of extremely heterogeneous
data. On this basis, this research aims at extending semantic web
approaches and technologies to architectural heritage knowledge management in
order to provide an integrated and multidisciplinary representation of the artifact
and of the knowledge necessary to support any decision or any intervention and
management activity. To this purpose, an ontology-based system, representing
the knowledge related to the artifact and its contexts, has been developed through
the formalization of domain-specific entities and relationships between them
Model Based Mission Assurance: NASA's Assurance Future
Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is seeing increased application in planning and design of NASAs missions. This suggests the question: what will be the corresponding practice of Model Based Mission Assurance (MBMA)? Contemporaneously, NASAs Office of Safety and Mission Assurance (OSMA) is evaluating a new objectives based approach to standards to ensure that the Safety and Mission Assurance disciplines and programs are addressing the challenges of NASAs changing missions, acquisition and engineering practices, and technology. MBSE is a prominent example of a changing engineering practice. We use NASAs objectives-based strategy for Reliability and Maintainability as a means to examine how MBSE will affect assurance. We surveyed MBSE literature to look specifically for these affects, and find a variety of them discussed (some are anticipated, some are reported from applications to date). Predominantly these apply to the early stages of design, although there are also extrapolations of how MBSE practices will have benefits for testing phases. As the effort to develop MBMA continues, it will need to clearly and unambiguously establish the roles of uncertainty and risk in the system model. This will enable a variety of uncertainty-based analyses to be performed much more rapidly than ever before and has the promise to increase the integration of CRM (Continuous Risk Management) and PRA (Probabilistic Risk Analyses) even more fully into the project development life cycle. Various views and viewpoints will be required for assurance disciplines, and an over-arching viewpoint will then be able to more completely characterize the state of the project/program as well as (possibly) enabling the safety case approach for overall risk awareness and communication
IDR : a participatory methodology for interdisciplinary design in technology enhanced learning
One of the important themes that emerged from the CAL’07 conference was the failure of technology to bring about the expected disruptive effect to learning and teaching. We identify one of the causes as an inherent weakness in prevalent development methodologies. While the problem of designing technology for learning is irreducibly multi-dimensional, design processes often lack true interdisciplinarity. To address this problem we present IDR, a participatory methodology for interdisciplinary techno-pedagogical design, drawing on the design patterns tradition (Alexander, Silverstein & Ishikawa, 1977) and the design research paradigm (DiSessa & Cobb, 2004). We discuss the iterative development and use of our methodology by a pan-European project team of educational researchers, software developers and teachers. We reflect on our experiences of the participatory nature of pattern design and discuss how, as a distributed team, we developed a set of over 120 design patterns, created using our freely available open source web toolkit. Furthermore, we detail how our methodology is applicable to the wider community through a workshop model, which has been run and iteratively refined at five major international conferences, involving over 200 participants

Emotional Biosensing: Exploring Critical Alternatives
Emotional biosensing is rising in daily life: Data and categories claim to know how people feel and suggest what they should do about it, while CSCW explores new biosensing possibilities. Prevalent approaches to emotional biosensing are too limited, focusing on the individual, optimization, and normative categorization. Conceptual shifts can help explore alternatives: toward materiality, from representation toward performativity, inter-action to intra-action, shifting biopolitics, and shifting affect/desire. We contribute (1) synthesizing wide-ranging conceptual lenses, providing analysis connecting them to emotional biosensing design, (2) analyzing selected design exemplars to apply these lenses to design research, and (3) offering our own recommendations for designers and design researchers. In particular we suggest humility in knowledge claims with emotional biosensing, prioritizing care and affirmation over self- improvement, and exploring alternative desires. We call for critically questioning and generatively re- imagining the role of data in configuring sensing, feeling, ‘the good life,’ and everyday experience
ETHICAL LEADERSHIP IN HIGHER EDUCATION: EVOLUTION OF INSTITUTIONAL ETHICS LOGIC
In higher education, we face a decade in which institutional integrity and legitimacy is under fire. In the words of Charles Dickens, this is certainly \u27the worst of times\u27 both economically and ethically for our nation, as well as for our colleges and universities. While members of higher education call for student academic ethics reform, ethical infractions by institutional leaders and faculty permeate professional literature and news--student loan scandals, charges of plagiarism, and falsified research, are but a few. This study begins with the premise that perhaps our efforts toward reform should focus on a better holistic understanding of system dynamics. The research question driving this study is, \u27How does the interaction of agent work-related ethical beliefs and knowledge, perceived pressures, and institutional agents or entities influence the evolution of institutional ethics logic over time?\u27 Grounded theory methods provided the framework for this study; this research used a complexity leadership and network lens in which to examine a university\u27s ethics logic, as defined by participants. Complexity leadership proposes operating within a framework of mechanism-based theorizing (Uhl-Bien & Marion, in press). The Organizational Risk Analyzer (ORA) assisted coding and analysis of data, and DyNet, a modeling platform, assisted in manipulating data for an understanding of interrelated complexity mechanisms embedded in university ethics logic. Findings incorporate a faculty ethics logic model, as well as a model of dynamical processes of university ethics logic evolution. The evolution model recognizes that: * The leadership process shifts by leader function, context, or structure. * The process underlying network robustness reflects holistic shifts in relationships with the addition or removal of nodes and links, and represents different or new patterns of behavior * The process of agentic correlation shifts as nodal presence or relationships change * The process of information diffusion shifts as network context, structure, or content changes Theoretical, methodological, higher education implications conclude the study
