Service Level Agreement-based GDPR Compliance and Security assurance in (multi)Cloud-based systems
Compliance with the new European General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/679) and security
assurance are currently two major challenges of Cloud-based systems. GDPR compliance implies both privacy and security
mechanisms definition, enforcement and control, including evidence collection. This paper presents a novel DevOps
framework aimed at supporting Cloud consumers in designing, deploying and operating (multi)Cloud systems that include
the necessary privacy and security controls for ensuring transparency to end-users, third parties in service provision (if any)
and law enforcement authorities. The framework relies on the risk-driven specification at design time of privacy and security
level objectives in the system Service Level Agreement (SLA) and in their continuous monitoring and enforcement at runtime.The research leading to these results has received

Big data for monitoring educational systems
This report considers “how advances in big data are likely to transform the context and methodology of monitoring educational systems within a long-term perspective (10-30 years) and impact the evidence based policy development in the sector”, big data are “large amounts of different types of data produced with high velocity from a high number of various types of sources.” Five independent experts were commissioned by Ecorys, responding to themes of: students' privacy, educational equity and efficiency, student tracking, assessment and skills. The experts were asked to consider the “macro perspective on governance on educational systems at all levels from primary, secondary education and tertiary – the latter covering all aspects of tertiary from further, to higher, and to VET”, prioritising primary and secondary levels of education
Medical Cyber-Physical Systems Development: A Forensics-Driven Approach
The synthesis of technology and the medical industry has partly contributed
to the increasing interest in Medical Cyber-Physical Systems (MCPS). While
these systems provide benefits to patients and professionals, they also
introduce new attack vectors for malicious actors (e.g. financially-and/or
criminally-motivated actors). A successful breach involving a MCPS can impact
patient data and system availability. The complexity and operating requirements
of a MCPS complicates digital investigations. Coupling this information with
the potentially vast amounts of information that a MCPS produces and/or has
access to is generating discussions on, not only, how to compromise these
systems but, more importantly, how to investigate these systems. The paper
proposes the integration of forensics principles and concepts into the design
and development of a MCPS to strengthen an organization's investigative
posture. The framework sets the foundation for future research in the

Practices, policies, and problems in the management of learning data: A survey of libraries’ use of digital learning objects and the data they create
This study analyzed libraries’ management of the data generated by library digital learning objects (DLO’s) such as forms, surveys, quizzes, and tutorials. A substantial proportion of respondents reported having a policy relevant to learning data, typically a campus-level policy, but most did not. Other problems included a lack of access to library learning data, concerns about student privacy, inadequate granularity or standardization, and a lack of knowledge about colleagues’ practices. We propose more dialogue on learning data within libraries, between libraries and administrators, and across the library profession
How to make privacy policies both GDPR-compliant and usable
It is important for organisations to ensure that their privacy policies are General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliant, and this has to be done by the May 2018 deadline. However, it is also important for these policies to be designed with the needs of the human recipient in mind. We carried out an investigation to find out how best to achieve this.We commenced by synthesising the GDPR requirements into a checklist-type format. We then derived a list of usability design guidelines for privacy notifications from the research literature. We augmented the recommendations with other findings reported in the research literature, in order to confirm the guidelines. We conclude by providing a usable and GDPR-compliant privacy policy template for the benefit of policy writers
Privacy, security, and trust issues in smart environments
Recent advances in networking, handheld computing and sensor technologies have driven forward research towards the realisation of Mark Weiser's dream of calm and ubiquitous computing (variously called pervasive computing, ambient computing, active spaces, the disappearing computer or context-aware computing). In turn, this has led to the emergence of smart environments as one significant facet of research in this domain. A smart environment, or space, is a region of the real world that is extensively equipped with sensors, actuators and computing components [1]. In effect the smart space becomes a part of a larger information system: with all actions within the space potentially affecting the underlying computer applications, which may themselves affect the space through the actuators. Such smart environments have tremendous potential within many application areas to improve the utility of a space. Consider the potential offered by a smart environment that prolongs the time an elderly or infirm person can live an independent life or the potential offered by a smart environment that supports vicarious learning

Cyber insurance of information systems: Security and privacy cyber insurance contracts for ICT and helathcare organizations
Nowadays, more-and-more aspects of our daily activities are digitalized. Data and assets in the cyber-space, both for individuals and organizations, must be safeguarded. Thus, the insurance sector must face the challenge of digital transformation in the 5G era with the right set of tools. In this paper, we present CyberSure-an insurance framework for information systems. CyberSure investigates the interplay between certification, risk management, and insurance of cyber processes. It promotes continuous monitoring as the new building block for cyber insurance in order to overcome the current obstacles of identifying in real-time contractual violations by the insured party and receiving early warning notifications prior the violation. Lightweight monitoring modules capture the status of the operating components and send data to the CyberSure backend system which performs the core decision making. Therefore, an insured system is certified dynamically, with the risk and insurance perspectives being evaluated at runtime as the system operation evolves. As new data become available, the risk management and the insurance policies are adjusted and fine-tuned. When an incident occurs, the insurance company possesses adequate information to assess the situation fast, estimate accurately the level of a potential loss, and decrease the required period for compensating the insured customer. The framework is applied in the ICT and healthcare domains, assessing the system of medium-size organizations.
