    BoostFM: Boosted Factorization Machines for Top-N Feature-based Recommendation

    Feature-based matrix factorization techniques such as Factorization Machines (FM) have been proven to achieve impressive accuracy for the rating prediction task. However, most common recommendation scenarios are formulated as a top-N item ranking problem with implicit feedback (e.g., clicks, purchases)rather than explicit ratings. To address this problem, with both implicit feedback and feature information, we propose a feature-based collaborative boosting recommender called BoostFM, which integrates boosting into factorization models during the process of item ranking. Specifically, BoostFM is an adaptive boosting framework that linearly combines multiple homogeneous component recommenders, which are repeatedly constructed on the basis of the individual FM model by a re-weighting scheme. Two ways are proposed to efficiently train the component recommenders from the perspectives of both pairwise and listwise Learning-to-Rank (L2R). The properties of our proposed method are empirically studied on three real-world datasets. The experimental results show that BoostFM outperforms a number of state-of-the-art approaches for top-N recommendation

    On intelligible multimodal visual analysis

    Analyzing data becomes an important skill in a more and more digital world. Yet, many users are facing knowledge barriers preventing them to independently conduct their data analysis. To tear down some of these barriers, multimodal interaction for visual analysis has been proposed. Multimodal interaction through speech and touch enables not only experts, but also novice users to effortlessly interact with such kind of technology. However, current approaches do not take the user differences into account. In fact, whether visual analysis is intelligible ultimately depends on the user. In order to close this research gap, this dissertation explores how multimodal visual analysis can be personalized. To do so, it takes a holistic view. First, an intelligible task space of visual analysis tasks is defined by considering personalization potentials. This task space provides an initial basis for understanding how effective personalization in visual analysis can be approached. Second, empirical analyses on speech commands in visual analysis as well as used visualizations from scientific publications further reveal patterns and structures. These behavior-indicated findings help to better understand expectations towards multimodal visual analysis. Third, a technical prototype is designed considering the previous findings. Enriching the visual analysis by a persistent dialogue and a transparency of the underlying computations, conducted user studies show not only advantages, but address the relevance of considering the user’s characteristics. Finally, both communications channels – visualizations and dialogue – are personalized. Leveraging linguistic theory and reinforcement learning, the results highlight a positive effect of adjusting to the user. Especially when the user’s knowledge is exceeded, personalizations helps to improve the user experience. Overall, this dissertations confirms not only the importance of considering the user’s characteristics in multimodal visual analysis, but also provides insights on how an intelligible analysis can be achieved. By understanding the use of input modalities, a system can focus only on the user’s needs. By understanding preferences on the output modalities, the system can better adapt to the user. Combining both directions imporves user experience and contributes towards an intelligible multimodal visual analysis

    An Empirical Comparison of Dissimilarity Measures for Recommender Systems

    Many content-based recommendation approaches are based on a dissimilarity measure based on the product attributes. In this paper, we evaluate four dissimilarity measures for product recommendation using an online survey. In this survey, we asked users to specify which products they considered to be relevant recommendations given a reference product. We used microwave ovens as product category. Based on these responses, we create a relative relevance matrix we use to evaluate the dissimilarity measures with. Also, we use this matrix to estimate weights to be used in the dissimilarity measures. In this way, we evaluate four dissimilarity measures: the Euclidean Distance, the Hamming Distance, the Heterogeneous Euclidean-Overlap Metric, and the Adapted Gower Coefficient. The evaluation shows that these weights improve recommendation performance. Furthermore, the experiments indicate that when recommending a single product, the Heterogeneous Euclidean-Overlap Metric should be used and when recommending more than one product the Adapted Gower Coefficient is the best alternative. Finally, we compare these dissimilarity measures with a collaborative method and show that this method performs worse than the dissimilarity based approaches

    Modelling residential water consumers’ behaviors by feature selection and feature weighting

    Identifying the most relevant determinants of water consuming or saving behaviors at the household level is key to building mathematical models that predict urban water demand variability in space and time and to explore the effects of different Water Demand Management Strategies for the residential sector. This work contributes a novel approach based on feature selection and feature weighting to model the single-user consumption behavior at the household level. A two-step procedure consisting of the extraction of the most relevant determinants of users’ consumption and the identification of a predictive model of water consumers’ profile is proposed and tested on a real case study. Results show the effectiveness of the proposed method in capturing the influence of candidate determinants on residential water consumption, as well as in attaining sufficiently accurate predictions of users’ consumption profiles, which constitutes essential information to support residential water demand management
