    All Hands on Deck: Choosing Virtual End Effector Representations to Improve Near Field Object Manipulation Interactions in Extended Reality

    Extended reality, or XR , is the adopted umbrella term that is heavily gaining traction to collectively describe Virtual reality (VR), Augmented reality (AR), and Mixed reality (MR) technologies. Together, these technologies extend the reality that we experience either by creating a fully immersive experience like in VR or by blending in the virtual and real worlds like in AR and MR. The sustained success of XR in the workplace largely hinges on its ability to facilitate efficient user interactions. Similar to interacting with objects in the real world, users in XR typically interact with virtual integrants like objects, menus, windows, and information that convolve together to form the overall experience. Most of these interactions involve near-field object manipulation for which users are generally provisioned with visual representations of themselves also called self-avatars. Representations that involve only the distal entity are called end-effector representations and they shape how users perceive XR experiences. Through a series of investigations, this dissertation evaluates the effects of virtual end effector representations on near-field object retrieval interactions in XR settings. Through studies conducted in virtual, augmented, and mixed reality, implications about the virtual representation of end-effectors are discussed, and inferences are made for the future of near-field interaction in XR to draw upon from. This body of research aids technologists and designers by providing them with details that help in appropriately tailoring the right end effector representation to improve near-field interactions, thereby collectively establishing knowledge that epitomizes the future of interactions in XR

How do neural networks become established by means of multimodal pattern replications, and how are they involved in conceptualization? How are resonance textures within cellular entities extended in the body and the mind by means of mirroring processes? In which ways do they correlate to consciousness and self-consciousness? Is it possible to explain out-of-awareness unconscious processes? What holds together the relationship between experiential reality, bodily processes like memory, reason, or imagination, and sign-systems and simulation structures like metaphor and metonymy visible in human language?     Addressing Gender Equity through Artistic Process

    On our society, girls and women face unique physical and psychic dangers. There is insufficient support for respectful surfacing and articulation of voice, neither are there sufficient tools with which to combat the socio-environmental phenomena of “hitting the wall” and “going underground.” (Gilligan 1983). While the creative process is full of risk taking and challenge for all, it presents additional problems for girls and women. This thesis identifies and explores the ideas and factors that influence female voicing, with a focus on artistic process as a voicing too. The reader is offered a selective review of the literature on gender equity issues in education and literature on critical and creative thinking in the theatre arts. Drawn upon are the works of Elizabeth DeBold, Peg Orenstein, Mary Pipher, Judith Logan, Richard Paul, Dr. Delores Gallo, Karen Warren, Suzanne Langer, Uta Hagen, and Viola Spolin among others. Also presented is an original performance piece, “Rosa Mystica.” Following the performance piece is an analysis of its evolution in relation to described conceptual models, including a scene which models the performance of a writing/theatre studio group. The central focus of the piece is on the mother/daughter relationship. The text of the play offers perspective on issues of gender equity in relation to creative performance. The paper concludes with a brief look at Irondale, an effective, existing arts in education program based on values I share. And finally, I offer a model of the essential frame of the writing/theatre studios, an integrated arts in education program for fostering artistic process, which offers a forum for developing critical and creative thinking skills, writing skills, a sense of best performance and a sense of vitality and community for all participants

Vision-based interfaces can offer a more natural and appealing way of communication. Moreover, it can help in the e-accessibility component of the e-inclusion. The aim is to develop a usable system, that is, the end-user must consider the use of this device effective, efficient and satisfactory. The research's main contribution is SINA, a hands-free interface based on computer vision techniques for motion impaired users. This interface does not require the user to use his upper body limbs, as only nose motion is considered. Besides the technical aspect, user's satisfaction when using an interface is a critical issue.
