    Supporting Learning with Wireless Sensor Data

    In this article, learning is studied in in situ applications that involve sensors. The main questions are how to conceptualize experiential learning involving sensors and what kinds of learning applications using sensors already exist or could be designed. It is claimed that experiential learning, context information and sensor data supports twenty first century learning. The concepts of context, technology-mediated experiences, shared felt experiences and experiential learning theory will be used to describe a framework for sensor-based mobile learning environments. Several scenarios and case examples using sensors and sensor data will be presented, and they will be analyzed using the framework. Finally, the article contributes to the discussion concerning the role of technology-mediated learning experiences and collective sensor data in developing twenty first century learning by characterizing what kinds of skills and competences are supported in learning situations that involve sensors.In this article learning is studied in situations that involve sensors.     Thirty Years of Machine Learning: The Road to Pareto-Optimal Wireless Networks

    Future wireless networks have a substantial potential in terms of supporting a broad range of complex compelling applications both in military and civilian fields, where the users are able to enjoy high-rate, low-latency, low-cost and reliable information services. Achieving this ambitious goal requires new radio techniques for adaptive learning and intelligent decision making because of the complex heterogeneous nature of the network structures and wireless services. Machine learning (ML) algorithms have great success in supporting big data analytics, efficient parameter estimation and interactive decision making. Hence, in this article, we review the thirty-year history of ML by elaborating on supervised learning, unsupervised learning, reinforcement learning and deep learning. Furthermore, we investigate their employment in the compelling applications of wireless networks, including heterogeneous networks (HetNets), cognitive radios (CR), Internet of things (IoT), machine to machine networks (M2M), and so on. This article aims for assisting the readers in clarifying the motivation and methodology of the various ML algorithms, so as to invoke them for hitherto unexplored services as well as scenarios of future wireless networks.Comment: 46 pages, 22 fig

    Predicting topology propagation messages in mobile ad hoc networks: The value of history

Particularly, counting on message routing enhances the communication capability among these actors. Given the high dynamism of these networks and their low bandwidth, having mechanisms to predict the network topology offers several potential advantages; e.g., to reduce the number of topology propagation messages delivered through the network, the consumption of resources in the nodes and the amount of redundant retransmissions. Most strategies reported in the literature to perform these predictions are limited to support high mobility, consume a large amount of resources or require training. In order to contribute towards addressing that challenge, this paper presents a history-based predictor (HBP), which is a prediction strategy based on the assumption that some topological changes in these networks have happened before in the past, therefore, the predictor can take advantage of these patterns following a simple and low-cost approach. The article extends a previous proposal of the authors and evaluates its impact in highly mobile scenarios through the implementation of a real predictor for the optimized link state routing (OLSR) protocol. The use of this predictor, named OLSR-HBP, shows a reduction of 40–55% of topology propagation messages compared to the regular OLSR protocol.     Adaptive sampling in context-aware systems: a machine learning approach

    As computing systems become ever more pervasive, there is an increasing need for them to understand and adapt to the state of the environment around them: that is, their context. This understanding comes with considerable reliance on a range of sensors. However, portable devices are also very constrained in terms of power, and hence the amount of sensing must be minimised. In this paper, we present a machine learning architecture for context awareness which is designed to balance the sampling rates (and hence energy consumption) of individual sensors with the significance of the input from that sensor. This significance is based on predictions of the likely next context. The architecture is implemented using a selected range of user contexts from a collected data set. Simulation results show reliable context identification results. The proposed architecture is shown to significantly reduce the energy requirements of the sensors with minimal loss of accuracy in context identification

    Leveraging Edge Computing through Collaborative Machine Learning

    The Internet of Things (IoT) offers the ability to analyze and predict our surroundings through sensor networks at the network edge. To facilitate this predictive functionality, Edge Computing (EC) applications are developed by considering: power consumption, network lifetime and quality of context inference. Humongous contextual data from sensors provide data scientists better knowledge extraction, albeit coming at the expense of holistic data transfer that threatens the network feasibility and lifetime. To cope with this, collaborative machine learning is applied to EC devices to (i) extract the statistical relationships and (ii) construct regression (predictive) models to maximize communication efficiency. In this paper, we propose a learning methodology that improves the prediction accuracy by quantizing the input space and leveraging the local knowledge of the EC devices

    Robotic ubiquitous cognitive ecology for smart homes

    Robotic ecologies are networks of heterogeneous robotic devices pervasively embedded in everyday environments, where they cooperate to perform complex tasks. While their potential makes them increasingly popular, one fundamental problem is how to make them both autonomous and adaptive, so as to reduce the amount of preparation, pre-programming and human supervision that they require in real world applications. The project RUBICON develops learning solutions which yield cheaper, adaptive and efficient coordination of robotic ecologies. The approach we pursue builds upon a unique combination of methods from cognitive robotics, machine learning, planning and agent- based control, and wireless sensor networks. This paper illustrates the innovations advanced by RUBICON in each of these fronts before describing how the resulting techniques have been integrated and applied to a smart home scenario. The resulting system is able to provide useful services and pro-actively assist the users in their activities. RUBICON learns through an incremental and progressive approach driven by the feed- back received from its own activities and from the user, while also self-organizing the manner in which it uses available sensors, actuators and other functional components in the process. This paper summarises some of the lessons learned by adopting such an approach and outlines promising directions for future work
