    The goal of this thesis is to provide solutions for supporting the direct editing of graphs in visual representations for analyzing graphs. For that, a conceptual view on the user's tasks is established first. On this basis, several novel approaches to "visually edit" the different data aspects of graphs - the graph's structure and associated attribute values - are introduced. Thereby, different visual graph representations suitable for communicating the data are considered.Das Ziel der vorliegenden Dissertation ist, Lösungen zur Unterstützung des direkten Editierens von Graphen in visuellen Repräsentationen zur Analyse von Graphen bereitzustellen. Dafür wird zunächst eine konzeptuelle Sicht auf die Aufgaben des Nutzers entwickelt. Auf dieser Basis werden anschließend mehrere neue Verfahren eingeführt, welche das "visuelle Editieren" der verschiedenen Datenaspekte von Graphen - der Struktur sowie dazu assoziierte Attributwerte - ermöglichen. Dabei werden verschiedene visuelle Graphrepräsentationen berücksichtigt, welche die Daten in geeigneter Form kommunizieren

    Recent Advancements in Augmented Reality for Robotic Applications: A Survey

    Robots are expanding from industrial applications to daily life, in areas such as medical robotics, rehabilitative robotics, social robotics, and mobile/aerial robotics systems. In recent years, augmented reality (AR) has been integrated into many robotic applications, including medical, industrial, human–robot interactions, and collaboration scenarios. In this work, AR for both medical and industrial robot applications is reviewed and summarized. For medical robot applications, we investigated the integration of AR in (1) preoperative and surgical task planning; (2) image-guided robotic surgery; (3) surgical training and simulation; and (4) telesurgery. AR for industrial scenarios is reviewed in (1) human–robot interactions and collaborations; (2) path planning and task allocation; (3) training and simulation; and (4) teleoperation control/assistance. In addition, the limitations and challenges are discussed. Overall, this article serves as a valuable resource for working in the field of AR and robotic research, offering insights into the recent state of the art and prospects for improvement

    Text-based Spatial and Temporal Visualizations and their Applications in Visual Analytics

    Textual labels are an essential part of most visualizations used in practice. However, these textual labels are mainly used to annotate other visualizations rather than being a central part of the visualization. Visualization researchers in areas like cartography and geovisualization have studied the combination of graphical features and textual labels to generate map based visualizations, but textual labels alone are not the primary focus in these representations. The idea of using symbols in visual representations and their interpretation as a quantity is gaining more traction. These types of representations are not only aesthetically appealing but also present new possibilities of encoding data. Such scenarios regularly arise while designing visual representations, where designers have to investigate feasibility of encoding information using symbols alone especially textual labels but the lack of readily available automated tools, and design guidelines makes it prohibitively expensive to experiment with such visualization designs. In order to address such challenges, this thesis presents the design and development of visual representations consisting entirely of text. These visual representations open up the possibility of encoding different types of spatial and temporal datasets. We report our results through two novel visualizations: typographic maps and text-based TextRiver visualization. Typographic maps merge text and spatial data into a visual representation where text alone forms the graphical features, mimicking the practices of human map makers. We also introduce methods to combine our automatic typographic maps technique with spatial datasets to generate thema-typographic maps where the properties of individual characters in the map are modified based on the underlying spatial data. Our TextRiver visualization is composed of collection of stream-like shapes consisting entirely of text where each stream represents thematic strength variations over time within a corpus. Such visualization enables additional ways to encode information contained in temporal datasets by modifying text attributes. We also conducted a usability evaluation to assess the potential value of our text-based TextRiver design

    Deformable Beamsplitters: Enhancing Perception with Wide Field of View, Varifocal Augmented Reality Displays

    An augmented reality head-mounted display with full environmental awareness could present data in new ways and provide a new type of experience, allowing seamless transitions between real life and virtual content. However, creating a light-weight, optical see-through display providing both focus support and wide field of view remains a challenge. This dissertation describes a new dynamic optical element, the deformable beamsplitter, and its applications for wide field of view, varifocal, augmented reality displays. Deformable beamsplitters combine a traditional deformable membrane mirror and a beamsplitter into a single element, allowing reflected light to be manipulated by the deforming membrane mirror, while transmitted light remains unchanged. This research enables both single element optical design and correct focus while maintaining a wide field of view, as demonstrated by the description and analysis of two prototype hardware display systems which incorporate deformable beamsplitters. As a user changes the depth of their gaze when looking through these displays, the focus of virtual content can quickly be altered to match the real world by simply modulating air pressure in a chamber behind the deformable beamsplitter; thus ameliorating vergence–accommodation conflict. Two user studies verify the display prototypes’ capabilities and show the potential of the display in enhancing human performance at quickly perceiving visual stimuli. This work shows that near-eye displays built with deformable beamsplitters allow for simple optical designs that enable wide field of view and comfortable viewing experiences with the potential to enhance user perception.Doctor of Philosoph
