Storage Solutions for Big Data Systems: A Qualitative Study and Comparison
Big data systems development is full of challenges in view of the variety of
application areas and domains that this technology promises to serve.
Typically, fundamental design decisions involved in big data systems design
include choosing appropriate storage and computing infrastructures. In this age
of heterogeneous systems that integrate different technologies for optimized
solution to a specific real world problem, big data system are not an exception
to any such rule. As far as the storage aspect of any big data system is
concerned, the primary facet in this regard is a storage infrastructure and
NoSQL seems to be the right technology that fulfills its requirements. However,
every big data application has variable data characteristics and thus, the
corresponding data fits into a different data model. This paper presents
feature and use case analysis and comparison of the four main data models
namely document oriented, key value, graph and wide column. Moreover, a feature
analysis of 80 NoSQL solutions has been provided, elaborating on the criteria
and points that a developer must consider while making a possible choice.
Typically, big data storage needs to communicate with the execution engine and
other processing and visualization technologies to create a comprehensive
solution. This brings forth second facet of big data storage, big data file
formats, into picture. The second half of the research paper compares the
advantages, shortcomings and possible use cases of available big data file
formats for Hadoop, which is the foundation for most big data computing
technologies. Decentralized storage and blockchain are seen as the next
generation of big data storage and its challenges and future prospects have
also been discussed
An Architecture for Provenance Systems
This document covers the logical and process architectures of provenance systems. The logical architecture identifies key roles and their interactions, whereas the process architecture discusses distribution and security. Impliance: A Next Generation Information Management Appliance
ably successful in building a large market and adapting to the changes of the
last three decades, its impact on the broader market of information management
is surprisingly limited. If we were to design an information management system
from scratch, based upon today's requirements and hardware capabilities, would
it look anything like today's database systems?" In this paper, we introduce
Impliance, a next-generation information management system consisting of
hardware and software components integrated to form an easy-to-administer
appliance that can store, retrieve, and analyze all types of structured,
semi-structured, and unstructured information. We first summarize the trends
that will shape information management for the foreseeable future. Those trends
imply three major requirements for Impliance: (1) to be able to store, manage,
and uniformly query all data, not just structured records; (2) to be able to
scale out as the volume of this data grows; and (3) to be simple and robust in
operation. We then describe four key ideas that are uniquely combined in
Impliance to address these requirements, namely the ideas of: (a) integrating
software and off-the-shelf hardware into a generic information appliance; (b)
automatically discovering, organizing, and managing all data - unstructured as
well as structured - in a uniform way; (c) achieving scale-out by exploiting
simple, massive parallel processing, and (d) virtualizing compute and storage
resources to unify, simplify, and streamline the management of Impliance.

Using IODyne: Illustrations and Examples
"IODyne (pronounced ""iodine"") is an Internet client program that allows one to retrieve information from servers by dynamically combining information objects. Information objects are abstract representations of bibliographic data, typically titles (or title keywords), author names, subject and classification identifiers, and full-text search terms.

The European digital information landscape: how can LIBER contribute?
This paper looks at a snapshot of the current state of digitisation in the information landscape. It then looks at what LIBER can contribute to that landscape through portal
development, funding, identifying and documenting best practice, lobbying at a European level, and managing the transition from paper to digital delivery, including
the issue of digital preservation. The paper ends by trying to identify how the user will use the digitised resources which are increasingly being made available by libraries
Theory and Practice of Data Citation
Citations are the cornerstone of knowledge propagation and the primary means
of assessing the quality of research, as well as directing investments in
science. Science is increasingly becoming "data-intensive", where large volumes
of data are collected and analyzed to discover complex patterns through
simulations and experiments, and most scientific reference works have been
replaced by online curated datasets. Yet, given a dataset, there is no
quantitative, consistent and established way of knowing how it has been used
over time, who contributed to its curation, what results have been yielded or
what value it has.
The development of a theory and practice of data citation is fundamental for
considering data as first-class research objects with the same relevance and
centrality of traditional scientific products. Many works in recent years have
discussed data citation from different viewpoints: illustrating why data
citation is needed, defining the principles and outlining recommendations for
data citation systems, and providing computational methods for addressing
specific issues of data citation.
The current panorama is many-faceted and an overall view that brings together
diverse aspects of this topic is still missing. Therefore, this paper aims to
describe the lay of the land for data citation, both from the theoretical (the

A Nine Month Progress Report on an Investigation into Mechanisms for Improving Triple Store Performance
This report considers the requirement for fast, efficient, and scalable triple stores as part of the effort to produce the Semantic Web. It summarises relevant information in the major background field of Database Management Systems (DBMS), and provides an overview of the techniques currently in use amongst the triple store community. The report concludes that for individuals and organisations to be willing to provide large amounts of information as openly-accessible nodes on the Semantic Web, storage and querying of the data must be cheaper and faster than it is currently. Experiences from the DBMS field can be used to maximise triple store performance, and suggestions are provided for lines of investigation in areas of storage, indexing, and query optimisation. Finally, work packages are provided describing expected timetables for further study of these topics
Building an application for the writing process
The idea that writing is a process and not a product is now generally accepted in writing education, but discussions of digital scholarly communication often neglect the idea, in theory and in practice. This thesis report introduces a Mac OS X software package to support the early stages of the writing process, called Brouillon. Brouillon’s features include: the concatenation of discrete note files into notebooks; notes appearing in multiple notebooks; note intake from mobile devices via Dropbox; and an open standard file format. The report also provides a model of the organization of products of the writing process, with a focus on Brouillon’s most unusual feature, multi-notebook notes. It discusses difficulties in implementation and identifies possibilities for future improvement
A Study on the Open Source Digital Library Software's: Special Reference to DSpace, EPrints and Greenstone

of three open source digital library management software used to assimilate and
