    QUALITY OF SERVICE ORIENTED WEB SERVICE SELECTION: AN EVALUATION OF TECHNIQUES

    Abstract In service-oriented computing, web services are the basic foundation that aims to facilitate building of business application in a more flexible and interoperable manner for enterprise collaboration. One of the most promising advantages of web service technology is the possibility of creating added-value services by combining existing ones. A key step for composing and executing services lies in the selection of the individual service to use. Much attention has been devoted to appropriate selection of service functionalities, but also the non-functional properties of the services play a key role. A web service selection technique must take as much as possible the important influencing aspects into account to the selection process in order to minimize the selection efforts. This paper evaluates several web service selection techniques published in literature with the focus on their contributions to web service selection. The evaluation results can be used as a basis for improving web service selection techniques and then simplifying the selection tasks

    Design and Implementation of Mobile Educational Games: Networks for Innovation

    Research networks foster creativity and break down institutional barriers, but introduce geographic barriers to communication and collaboration. In designing mobile educational games, our distributed team took advantage of diverse talent pools and differing perspectives to drive forward a core vision of our design targets. Our strategies included intense design workshops, use of online meeting rooms, group paper and software prototyping, and dissemination of prototypes to other teams for refinement and repurposing. Our group showed strong activity at the university-centered nodes with periods of highly effective dissemination between these nodes and to outside groups; we used workshop invitations to gather new ideas and perspectives, to refine the core vision, to forge inter-project links, and to stay current on what was happening in other networks. Important aspects of our final deliverables came from looselyassociated network members who engaged via collaborative design exercises in workshops, emphasizing the need to bring the network together and the importance of outside influences as ideas evolve. Our final deliverable, a mobile educational game and a series of parallel technology demonstrations, reflect the mix of influences and the focus on iterated development that our network maintained

    Library service capital: The case for measuring and managing intangible assets

    Introduction - Libraries are continually evolving their services and assessment methods, but need a new lens to understand their position. Library assessment has evolved from operational statistics to strategic management systems using quantitative and qualitative methods from business and social research, Literature suggests intellectual capital theory could assist libraries to develop new, improved measures of performance and value for the network world, particularly for staff capability and relationship management, as a gap in current systems. Purpose - The study investigates intangible assets that academic libraries are exploiting to compete in the digital age and methods that libraries can use to assess intangible assets. Theoretical framework. We use two paradigms: the resource-based view that recognizes organizational assets as strategic resources whose value, durability, rarity, inimitability, and non-substitutability represent competitive advantage; and the intellectual capital perspective, which regards human, structural, and customer/relational capital as long-term investments enabling value creation for stakeholders, similar to other capital assets. Methods - The study re-used data from prior survey and case study research, supplemented by evidence from the literature. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s categorization of intellectual assets was chosen as an analytical framework. Results - Academic libraries have developed significant human, structural, and relational assets that are enabling them to respond to environmental challenges. Conclusions - An intellectual capital lens can enable libraries to recognize their intangible assets as distinctive competencies with current relevance and enduring value.     Deep learning and 5G and beyond for child drowning prevention in swimming pools

    Drowning is a major health issue worldwide. The World Health Organization’s global report on drowning states that the highest rates of drowning deaths occur among children aged 1–4 years, followed by children aged 5–9 years. Young children can drown silently in as little as 25 s, even in the shallow end or in a baby pool. The report also identifies that the main risk factor for children drowning is the lack of or inadequate supervision. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a novel 5G and beyond child drowning prevention system based on deep learning that detects and classifies distractions of inattentive parents or caregivers and alerts them to focus on active child supervision in swimming pools. In this proposal, we have generated our own dataset, which consists of images of parents/caregivers watching the children or being distracted. The proposed model can successfully perform a seven-class classification with very high accuracies (98%, 94%, and 90% for each model, respectively).     Generic Methods for Adaptive Management of Service Level Agreements in Cloud Computing

    The adoption of cloud computing to build and deliver application services has been nothing less than phenomenal. Service oriented systems are being built using disparate sources composed of web services, replicable datastores, messaging, monitoring and analytics functions and more. Clouds augment these systems with advanced features such as high availability, customer affinity and autoscaling on a fair pay-per-use cost model. The challenge lies in using the utility paradigm of cloud beyond its current exploit. Major trends show that multi-domain synergies are creating added-value service propositions. This raises two questions on autonomic behaviors, which are specifically ad- dressed by this thesis. The first question deals with mechanism design that brings the customer and provider(s) together in the procurement process. The purpose is that considering customer requirements for quality of service and other non functional properties, service dependencies need to be efficiently resolved and legally stipulated. The second question deals with effective management of cloud infrastructures such that commitments to customers are fulfilled and the infrastructure is optimally operated in accordance with provider policies. This thesis finds motivation in Service Level Agreements (SLAs) to answer these questions. The role of SLAs is explored as instruments to build and maintain trust in an economy where services are increasingly interdependent. The thesis takes a wholesome approach and develops generic methods to automate SLA lifecycle management, by identifying and solving relevant research problems. The methods afford adaptiveness in changing business landscape and can be localized through policy based controls. A thematic vision that emerges from this work is that business models, services and the delivery technology are in- dependent concepts that can be finely knitted together by SLAs. Experimental evaluations support the message of this thesis, that exploiting SLAs as foundations for market innovation and infrastructure governance indeed holds win-win opportunities for both cloud customers and cloud providers

    Management issues in open source software networks

    Open Source Software projects base their operation on collaborative structure for knowledge exchange in the form of provision or reception of information, expertise and feedback on the creation of source code. Here, we address the direction of these knowledge flows among projects throughout social networks and their impact on project success. We identify the roles of membership or contribution that individuals play within projects. We found that connections through contributors who bring their knowledge inbound the project, improve project success; connections through members, who transfer their knowledge towards other projects, enhance project success. Finally, we found that ties through shared membership and contribution hamper project success. The analysis of knowledge flows and their impact on project success imply a translation of returns from investment in social capital, where investment takes the shape of knowledge flows and the returns mean the projects’ diffusion over the networ
