Low carbon manufacturing: Characterization, theoretical models and implementation

    Get PDF
Today, the rising of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions is becoming the crucial factor for global warming especially in industrial sectors. Therefore, the research to reduce carbon intensity and enhance resources utilization in manufacturing industry is starting to be a timely topic. Low carbon manufacturing (LCM) can be referred to the manufacturing process that produces low carbon emissions intensity and uses energy and resources efficiently and effectively during the process as well. In this paper, the concepts of LCM are discussed and the LCM associated theoretical models, characterization and implementation perspective explored. The paper is structured in four parts. Firstly, the conception of low carbon manufacturing is critically reviewed then the characterization of low carbon manufacturing is discussed and formulated. Third part, the theoretical models are developed with initial models by using the theory from supply chain modeling and linear programming solutions (LP). The models show the relationship of resource utilizations and related variables for LCM in two levels: shop-floor and extended supply chain. Finally, the pilot implementations of LCM are discussed with two approaches: desktop or micro machines and devolved manufacturing. The paper is concluded with further discussions on the potential and application of LCM for manufacturing industry

Lean, green practices and process innovation: a model for green supply chain performance

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the relationship between lean, process innovation, green practices and green supply chain management performance. Data were gathered by surveying 374 firms in the manufacturing supply chain industry. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to analyze the collected data. The study results show general support for the theoretical research framework. Findings reveal that there is a synergetic effect between process innovations, green and lean practices playing a crucial role towards the improvement of green supply chain performance. This paper presents an innovative approach since it studies simultaneously the three dimensions of sustainability (environmental, social and economic), the lean, the innovation process and green paradigms which are considered strategic for supply chain competitiveness. Investigation of the relationships between the four strategies is a contribution that the authors hope will become a forward step in the promotion of sustainability as a third dimension of the manufacturing supply chain, along with the efficiency and responsiveness dimensions

Abstract- Creating the business models for supply chain process is the subject of modern scientific research in the field of strategic planning and management of the enterprise. Some theoretical and practical aspects have not yet received a comprehensive scientific substantiation. General problem of enterprise management is traditionally analyzed in the researches, and business modeling is not fully investigated. The current state of the economy and peculiarities of its development, as well as the transformational nature of the Russian economy, show that the most important theoretical and practical aspects, which require scientific attention and development, analysis and systematization, are the theoretical provisions of business modeling concept for supply chain process; clarification of the term "business model" for supply chain process of an industrial enterprise; definition of the main elements and substantiation of the technology of business model formation; systematization and generalization of modern methods of strategic analysis; formation of an integrated system for assessment the effectiveness of the enterprises business model for supply chain process. The issues of strategic development of the enterprise always arouse a great interest among researchers. Today, a significant number of business models have been created for the development of enterprises of various industry structures. The purpose of the article is to systematize the information about the creation of business models for supply chain process of industrial enterprises, to consider the features of the models use at the present stage. Scientific and theoretical basis of the research was the methods of analysis and synthesis, scientific abstraction, the use of quantitative and qualitative assessment methods, with the help of which the categories of the concept business model for the supply chain process were defined. Endogenous and exogenous factors, influencing the functioning of enterprises business models were identified. The article deals with the conceptual issues of the business model for the supply chain process formation, in particular, the essence and peculiarities of modern business models, as well as management approaches to the processes of development of enterprises business model for supply chain process. Keywords: business model, strategic development, industrial enterprise, supply chain process, creation

Holonic Business Process Modeling in Small to Medium Sized Enterprises

Holonic modeling analysis which is the application of system thinking in design, manage, and improvement, is used in a novel context for business process modeling. An approach and techniques of holon and holarchies is presented specifically for small and medium sized enterprise process modeling development. The fitness of the approach is compared with well known reductionist or task breakdown approach. The strength and weaknesses of the holonic modeling is discussed with illustrating case example in term of its suitability for an Indonesia's small and medium sized industry. The novel ideas in this paper have great impact on the way analyst should perceive business process. Future research is applying the approach in supply chain context

The evaluation of factors influencing knowledge sharing to improve supply chain performance in oil industry

Nowadays, knowledge sharing as a part of knowledge management process has determining role in organization development. Despite the growing importance of knowledge sharing for competitive organizations, the lack of proper understanding of its barriers and facilitators makes problematic knowledge sharing which is one of the most important goals of knowledge management by organizations. This study aims to evaluate the factors influencing knowledge sharing to improve supply chain performance in the oil industry. In this study, the opinions of 98 managers and experts of Oil Company were studied as sample. Then the structural equation modeling technique was used to analyze the data. The results showed that knowledge sharing has direct and significant relationship with competitive strategies of supply chain and competitive strategies of supply chain have the same relationship with supply chain performance

Mitigating Space Industry Supply Chain Risk Thru Risk-Based Analysis

Using risk-based analysis to consider supply chain disruptions and uncertainty along with potential mitigation strategies in the early stages of space industry projects can be used avoid schedule delays, cost overruns, and lead to successful project outcomes. Space industry projects, especially launch vehicles, are complicated assemblies of high-technology and specialized components. Components are engineered, procured, manufactured, and assembled for specific missions or projects, unlike make-to-stock manufacturing where assemblies are produced at a mass production rate for customers to choose off the shelf or lot, like automobiles. The supply chain for a space industry project is a large, complicated web where one disruption, especially for sole-sourced components, could ripple through the project causing delays at multiple project milestones. This ripple effect can even cause the delay or cancelation of the entire project unless project managers develop and employ risk mitigations strategies against supply chain disruption and uncertainty. The unpredictability of when delays and disruptions may occur makes managing these projects extremely difficult. By using risk-based analysis, project managers can better plan for and mitigate supply chain risk and uncertainty for space industry projects to better manage project success. Space industry project supply chain risk and uncertainty can be evaluated through risk assessments at major project milestones and during the procurement process. Mitigations for identified risks can be evaluated and implemented to better manage project success. One mitigation strategy to supply chain risk and uncertainty is implementing a dual or multi-supplier sourcing procurement strategy. This research explores using a risk-based analysis to identify where this mitigation strategy can be beneficial for space industry projects and how its implementation affects project success. First a supply chain risk assessment and mitigation decision tool will be used at major project milestones to show where a multi-sourcing strategy may be beneficial. Next, updated supplier quote evaluation tools will confirm the usage of multiple suppliers for procurement. Modeling and simulation are then used to show the impact of that strategy on the project success metrics of cost and schedule
