Switching Control for Parameter Identifiability of Uncertain Systems

This paper considers the problem of identifying the parameters of an uncertain linear system by means of feedback control. The problem is approached by considering time-varying controllers. It is shown that even when the uncertainty set is not finite, parameter identifiability can be generically ensured by switching among a finite number of linear time-invariant controllers. The results are shown to have several implications, ranging from fault detection and isolation to adaptive and supervisory control. Practical aspects of the problem are also discussed in details

Robust output stabilization: improving performance via supervisory control

We analyze robust stability, in an input-output sense, of switched stable systems. The primary goal (and contribution) of this paper is to design switching strategies to guarantee that input-output stable systems remain so under switching. We propose two types of {\em supervisors}: dwell-time and hysteresis based. While our results are stated as tools of analysis they serve a clear purpose in design: to improve performance. In that respect, we illustrate the utility of our findings by concisely addressing a problem of observer design for Lur'e-type systems; in particular, we design a hybrid observer that ensures ``fast'' convergence with ``low'' overshoots. As a second application of our main results we use hybrid control in the context of synchronization of chaotic oscillators with the goal of reducing control effort; an originality of the hybrid control in this context with respect to other contributions in the area is that it exploits the structure and chaotic behavior (boundedness of solutions) of Lorenz oscillators.Comment: Short version submitted to IEEE TA

Ό-Dependent model reduction for uncertain discrete-time switched linear systems with average dwell time

    Get PDF
In this article, the model reduction problem for a class of discrete-time polytopic uncertain switched linear systems with average dwell time switching is investigated. The stability criterion for general discrete-time switched systems is first explored, and a ÎŒ-dependent approach is then introduced for the considered systems to the model reduction solution. A reduced-order model is constructed and its corresponding existence conditions are derived via LMI formulation. The admissible switching signals and the desired reduced model matrices are accordingly obtained from such conditions such that the resulting model error system is robustly exponentially stable and has an exponential H∞ performance. A numerical example is presented to demonstrate the potential and effectiveness of the developed theoretical results

Stability and Performance Analysis of Systems Under Constraints

All real world control systems must deal with actuator and state constraints. Standard conic sector bounded nonlinearity stability theory provides methods for analyzing the stability and performance of systems under constraints, but it is well-known that these conditions can be very conservative. A method is developed to reduce conservatism in the analysis of constraints by representing them as nonlinear real parametric uncertainty

Robust optimization based energy dispatch in smart grids considering demand uncertainty

    Get PDF
In this study we discuss the application of robust optimization to the problem of economic energy dispatch in smart grids. Robust optimization based MPC strategies for tackling uncertain load demands are developed. Unexpected additive disturbances are modelled by defining an affine dependence between the control inputs and the uncertain load demands. The developed strategies were applied to a hybrid power system connected to an electrical power grid. Furthermore, to demonstrate the superiority of the standard Economic MPC over the MPC tracking, a comparison (e.g average daily cost) between the standard MPC tracking, the standard Economic MPC, and the integration of both in one-layer and two-layer approaches was carried out. The goal of this research is to design a controller based on Economic MPC strategies, that tackles uncertainties, in order to minimise economic costs and guarantee service reliability of the system.Postprint (author's final draft

Process operating mode monitoring : switching online the right controller

    Get PDF
This paper presents a structure which deals with process operating mode monitoring and allows the control law reconfiguration by switching online the right controller. After a short review of the advances in switching based control systems during the last decade, we introduce our approach based on the definition of operating modes of a plant. The control reconfiguration strategy is achieved by online selection of an adequate controller, in a case of active accommodation. The main contribution lies in settling up the design steps of the multicontroller structure and its accurate integration in the operating mode detection and accommodation loop. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the operating mode detection and accommodation (OMDA) structure for which the design steps propose a method to study the asymptotic stability, switching performances improvement, and the tuning of the multimodel based detector

Issues in the design of switched linear systems : a benchmark study

    Get PDF
In this paper we present a tutorial overview of some of the issues that arise in the design of switched linear control systems. Particular emphasis is given to issues relating to stability and control system realisation. A benchmark regulation problem is then presented. This problem is most naturally solved by means of a switched control design. The challenge to the community is to design a control system that meets the required performance specifications and permits the application of rigorous analysis techniques. A simple design solution is presented and the limitations of currently available analysis techniques are illustrated with reference to this example
