    Perpetual Learning Framework based on Type-2 Fuzzy Logic System for a Complex Manufacturing Process

    This paper introduces a perpetual type-2 Neuro-Fuzzy modelling structure for continuous learning and its application to the complex thermo-mechanical metal process of steel Friction Stir Welding (FSW). The ‘perpetual’ property refers to the capability of the proposed system to continuously learn from new process data, in an incremental learning fashion. This is particularly important in industrial/manufacturing processes, as it eliminates the need to retrain the model in the presence of new data, or in the case of any process drift. The proposed structure evolves through incremental, hybrid (supervised/unsupervised) learning, and accommodates new sample data in a continuous fashion. The human-like information capture paradigm of granular computing is used along with an interval type-2 neural-fuzzy system to develop a modelling structure that is tolerant to the uncertainty in the manufacturing data (common challenge in industrial/manufacturing data). The proposed method relies on the creation of new fuzzy rules which are updated and optimised during the incremental learning process. An iterative pruning strategy in the model is then employed to remove any redundant rules, as a result of the incremental learning process. The rule growing/pruning strategy is used to guarantee that the proposed structure can be used in a perpetual learning mode.     DENFIS: Dynamic Evolving Neural-Fuzzy Inference System and its Application for Time Series Prediction

    This paper introduces a new type of fuzzy inference systems, denoted as DENFIS (dynamic evolving neural-fuzzy inference system), for adaptive on-line and off-line learning, and their application for dynamic time series prediction. DENFIS evolve through incremental, hybrid (supervised/unsupervised), learning and accommodate new input data, including new features, new classes, etc. through local element tuning. New fuzzy rules are created and updated during the operation of the system. At each time moment the output of DENFIS is calculated through a fuzzy inference system based on m-most activated fuzzy rules which are dynamically chosen from a fuzzy rule set. Two approaches are proposed: (1) dynamic creation of a first-order TakagiSugeno type fuzzy rule set for a DENFIS on-line model; (2) creation of a first-order TakagiSugeno type fuzzy rule set, or an expanded high-order one, for a DENFIS off-line model. A set of fuzzy rules can be inserted into DENFIS before, or during its learning process. Fuzzy rules can also be extracted during the learning process or after it. An evolving clustering method (ECM), which is employed in both on-line and off-line DENFIS models, is also introduced.     Adaptive Resonance Theory: Self-Organizing Networks for Stable Learning, Recognition, and Prediction

    Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) is a neural theory of human and primate information processing and of adaptive pattern recognition and prediction for technology. Biological applications to attentive learning of visual recognition categories by inferotemporal cortex and hippocampal system, medial temporal amnesia, corticogeniculate synchronization, auditory streaming, speech recognition, and eye movement control are noted. ARTMAP systems for technology integrate neural networks, fuzzy logic, and expert production systems to carry out both unsupervised and supervised learning. Fast and slow learning are both stable response to large non stationary databases. Match tracking search conjointly maximizes learned compression while minimizing predictive error. Spatial and temporal evidence accumulation improve accuracy in 3-D object recognition.     Incremental multiple objective genetic algorithms

    This paper presents a new genetic algorithm approach to multi-objective optimization problemsIncremental Multiple Objective Genetic Algorithms (IMOGA). Different from conventional MOGA methods, it takes each objective into consideration incrementally. The whole evolution is divided into as many phases as the number of objectives, and one more objective is considered in each phase. Each phase is composed of two stages: first, an independent population is evolved to optimize one specific objective; second, the better-performing individuals from the evolved single-objective population and the multi-objective population evolved in the last phase are joined together by the operation of integration. The resulting population then becomes an initial multi-objective population, to which a multi-objective evolution based on the incremented objective set is applied. The experiment results show that, in most problems, the performance of IMOGA is better than that of three other MOGAs, NSGA-II, SPEA and PAES. IMOGA can find more solutions during the same time span, and the quality of solutions is better

    Information Fusion and Hierarchical Knowledge Discovery by ARTMAP Neural Networks

    Mapping novel terrain from sparse, complex data often requires the resolution of conflicting information from sensors working at different times, locations, and scales, and from experts with different goals and situations. Information fusion methods help resolve inconsistencies in order to distinguish correct from incorrect answers, as when evidence variously suggests that an object's class is car, truck, or airplane. The methods developed here consider a complementary problem, supposing that information from sensors and experts is reliable though inconsistent, as when evidence suggests that an objects class is car, vehicle, or man-made. Underlying relationships among objects are assumed to be unknown to the automated system of the human user. The ARTMAP information fusion system uses distributed code representations that exploit the neural network's capacity for one-to-many learning in order to produce self-organizing expert systems that discover hierarchial knowledge structures. The system infers multi-level relationships among groups of output classes, without any supervised labeling of these relationships.
