    Internet of Underwater Things and Big Marine Data Analytics -- A Comprehensive Survey

    The Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) is an emerging communication ecosystem developed for connecting underwater objects in maritime and underwater environments. The IoUT technology is intricately linked with intelligent boats and ships, smart shores and oceans, automatic marine transportations, positioning and navigation, underwater exploration, disaster prediction and prevention, as well as with intelligent monitoring and security. The IoUT has an influence at various scales ranging from a small scientific observatory, to a midsized harbor, and to covering global oceanic trade. The network architecture of IoUT is intrinsically heterogeneous and should be sufficiently resilient to operate in harsh environments. This creates major challenges in terms of underwater communications, whilst relying on limited energy resources. Additionally, the volume, velocity, and variety of data produced by sensors, hydrophones, and cameras in IoUT is enormous, giving rise to the concept of Big Marine Data (BMD), which has its own processing challenges. Hence, conventional data processing techniques will falter, and bespoke Machine Learning (ML) solutions have to be employed for automatically learning the specific BMD behavior and features facilitating knowledge extraction and decision support. The motivation of this paper is to comprehensively survey the IoUT, BMD, and their synthesis. It also aims for exploring the nexus of BMD with ML. We set out from underwater data collection and then discuss the family of IoUT data communication techniques with an emphasis on the state-of-the-art research challenges. We then review the suite of ML solutions suitable for BMD handling and analytics.     Fish species recognition using transfer learning techniques

    Marine species recognition is the process of identifying various species that help in population estimation and identifying the endangered types for taking further remedies and actions. The superior performance of deep learning for classification is due to the property of estimating millions of parameters that have to be extracted from many annotated datasets. However, many types of fish species are becoming extinct, which may reduce the number of samples. The unavailability of a large dataset is a significant hurdle for applying a deep neural network that can be overcome using transfer learning techniques. To overcome this problem, we propose a transfer learning technique using a pre-trained model that uses underwater fish images as input and applies a transfer learning technique to detect the fish species using a pre-trained Google Inception-v3 model. We have evaluated our proposed method on the Fish4knowledge(F4K) dataset and obtained an accuracy of 95.37%. The research would be helpful to identify fish existence and quantity for marine biologists to understand the underwater environment to encourage its preservation and study the behavior and interactions of marine animals

    A Comprehensive Survey of Deep Learning in Remote Sensing: Theories, Tools and Challenges for the Community

    In recent years, deep learning (DL), a re-branding of neural networks (NNs), has risen to the top in numerous areas, namely computer vision (CV), speech recognition, natural language processing, etc. Whereas remote sensing (RS) possesses a number of unique challenges, primarily related to sensors and applications, inevitably RS draws from many of the same theories as CV; e.g., statistics, fusion, and machine learning, to name a few. This means that the RS community should be aware of, if not at the leading edge of, of advancements like DL. Herein, we provide the most comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art RS DL research. We also review recent new developments in the DL field that can be used in DL for RS. Namely, we focus on theories, tools and challenges for the RS community. Specifically, we focus on unsolved challenges and opportunities as it relates to (i) inadequate data sets, (ii) human-understandable solutions for modelling physical phenomena, (iii) Big Data, (iv) non-traditional heterogeneous data sources, (v) DL architectures and learning algorithms for spectral, spatial and temporal data, (vi) transfer learning, (vii) an improved theoretical understanding of DL systems, (viii) high barriers to entry, and (ix) training and optimizing the DL.Comment: 64 pages, 411 references.     Towards a robust slam framework for resilient AUV navigation

    Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are playing an increasing part in modern navies, to the point that the control of oceans will soon be decided by their strategic use. In face of more complex missions occurring in potentially hostile environments, the resilience of such systems becomes critical. In this study, we investigate the following scenario: how does a lone AUV could recover from a temporary breakdown that has created a gap in its measurements, while remaining beneath the surface to avoid detection? It is assumed that the AUV is equipped with an active sonar and is operating in an uncharted area. The vehicle has to rely on itself by recovering its location using a Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithm. While SLAM is widely investigated and developed in the case of aerial and terrestrial robotics, the nature of the poorly structured underwater environment dramatically challenges its effectiveness. To address such a complex problem, the usual side scan sonar data association techniques are investigated under a global registration problem while applying robust graph SLAM modelling. In particular, ways to improve the global detection of features from sonar mosaic region patches that react well to the MICR similarity measure are discussed. The main contribution of this study is centered on a novel data processing framework that is able to generate different graph topologies using robust SLAM techniques. One of its advantages is to facilitate the testing of different modelling hypotheses to tackle the data gap following the temporary breakdown and make the most of the limited available information. Several research perspectives related to this framework are discussed. Notably, the possibility to further extend the proposed framework to heterogeneous datasets and the opportunity to accelerate the recovery process by inferring information about the breakdown using machine learning.PH

    Fish and Ships: Impacts of Boat Noise on the Singing Fish, Porichthys notatus

    As anthropogenic ocean noise rises, research into its impacts on marine life is intensifying. Recent studies show concerning effects of noise on a variety of taxa, including fish. However currently lacking are in situ studies: the majority of fish studies have been lab-based, which lack the natural conditions and interconnections that put results in context. Further, the dearth of baseline information on natural fish sounds, communication and behaviours, limits predictions of noise impacts. Here I investigated the highly vocal plainfin midshipman (Porichthys notatus) in its natural habitat to determine the effects of boat noise on wild fish. Porichthys notatus uses sound to communicate during courtship and aggression, and depends on paternal care to safeguard nests in intertidal zones over several months. I first described acoustic communication features of P. notatus in situ by quantifying its vocalizations from longterm audio recordings gathered via hydrophones near a nesting site. I then characterized behaviours associated with acoustic signals by analyzing audio and video data of nest-guarding P. notatus. Finally, I determined the response of P. notatus to live motor-boat noise by examining behavioural and vocal activity of P. notatus in boat noise, ambient and control conditions. In addition to the manual analysis, I used an automated approach to determine overall movement of P. notatus under boat noise, ambient and control conditions. Findings reveal that when exposed to boat noise, fewer P. notatus predators were documented in the vicinity of P. notatus nests, while P. notatus increased overall time spent moving inside nests. Thus, noise benefits P. notatus indirectly by decreasing predator pressure, yet has direct negative impacts on P. notatus by increasing stress and metabolic costs. Such results reveal fitness consequences at both species and ecosystem scales, and indicate the importance of accounting for ecological relationships when predicting noise effects

    Grounding semantic cognition using computational modelling and network analysis

    The overarching objective of this thesis is to further the field of grounded semantics using a range of computational and empirical studies. Over the past thirty years, there have been many algorithmic advances in the modelling of semantic cognition. A commonality across these cognitive models is a reliance on hand-engineering “toy-models”. Despite incorporating newer techniques (e.g. Long short-term memory), the model inputs remain unchanged. We argue that the inputs to these traditional semantic models have little resemblance with real human experiences. In this dissertation, we ground our neural network models by training them with real-world visual scenes using naturalistic photographs. Our approach is an alternative to both hand-coded features and embodied raw sensorimotor signals. We conceptually replicate the mutually reinforcing nature of hybrid (feature-based and grounded) representations using silhouettes of concrete concepts as model inputs. We next gradually develop a novel grounded cognitive semantic representation which we call scene2vec, starting with object co-occurrences and then adding emotions and language-based tags. Limitations of our scene-based representation are identified for more abstract concepts (e.g. freedom). We further present a large-scale human semantics study, which reveals small-world semantic network topologies are context-dependent and that scenes are the most dominant cognitive dimension. This finding leads us to conclude that there is no meaning without context. Lastly, scene2vec shows promising human-like context-sensitive stereotypes (e.g. gender role bias), and we explore how such stereotypes are reduced by targeted debiasing. In conclusion, this thesis provides support for a novel computational viewpoint on investigating meaning - scene-based grounded semantics. Future research scaling scene-based semantic models to human-levels through virtual grounding has the potential to unearth new insights into the human mind and concurrently lead to advancements in artificial general intelligence by enabling robots, embodied or otherwise, to acquire and represent meaning directly from the environment
