Exploiting orthogonality in DVB-S2X through time pre-compensation
The superframing option of the recent DVB-S2X standard specifies, for the so-called SF-Pilot fields, the use of the orthogonal set of Walsh-Hadamard (WH) sequences. In order
to exploit this orthogonality, waveforms coming from different beams to the k-th User Terminal (UT) should be quasi perfectly aligned in time. While in the downlink part of a terrestrial system
this is quite straightforward, in satellite system, having a satellite as a relay, this is not the case, especially when large baudrates are considered in the transmission. A procedure to compensate for timing misalignment amongst waveforms is here presented and the advantages are quantified through numerical simulations. In particular, Channel State Information (CSI) estimation errors, which are fundamental for precoding techniques, are evaluated. While the focus of the work is on systems which enable precoding techniques, the procedure can be applied in each scenario which uses the superframing structure of DVB-S2X in an interference
limited scenario
Partial-Data Superimposed Training with Data Precoding for OFDM Systems
Superimposed training (ST) is a recently addressed technique used for channel estimation where known training sequences are arithmetically added to data symbols, avoiding the use of dedicated pilot subcarriers, and thus, increasing the available bandwidth compared with traditional pilot symbol assisted modulation schemes. However, the system handles data interference over channel estimation as a result of the ST process; also, data detection is degraded by pilot interference. Recent ST methods have analyzed the data interference and presented schemes that deal with it. We propose a novel superimposed model over a precoded data scheme, named partial-data superimposed training (PDST), where an interference control factor assigns the adequate information level to be added to the training sequence in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems. Also, a data detection method is introduced to improve the symbol error rate performance. Moreover, a capacity analysis of the system has been derived. Finally, simulation results confirm that performance of PDST is superior to previous proposals

Adaptive averaging channel estimation for DVB-T2 systems
This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University LondonIn modern communication systems, the rate of transmitted data is growing rapidly. This leads to the need for more sophisticated methods and techniques of implementation in every block of the transmitter-receiver chain. The weakest link in radio communications is the transmission channel. The signal, which is passed through it, suffers from many degrading factors like noise, attenuation, diffraction, scattering etc. In the receiver side, the modulated signal has to be restored to its initial state in order to extract the useful information. Assuming that the channel acts like a filter with finite impulse, one has to know its coefficients in order to apply the inverse function, which will restore the signal back to its initial state. The techniques which deal with this problem are called channel estimation. Noise is one of the causes that degrade the quality of the received signal. If it could be discarded, then the process of channel estimation would be easier. Transmitting special symbols, called pilots with known amplitude, phase and position to the receiver and assuming that the noise has zero mean, an averaging process could reduce the noise impact to the pilot amplitudes and thus simplify the channel estimation process. In this thesis, a novel channel estimation method based on noise rejection is introduced. The estimator takes into account the time variations of the channel and adapts its buffer size in order to achieve the best performance. Many configurations of the estimator were tested and at the beginning of the research fixed size estimators were tested. The fixed estimator has a very good performance for channels which could be considered as stationary in the time domain, like Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channels or slowly time-varying channels. AWGN channel is a channel model where the only distorting factor is the noise, where noise is every unwanted signal interfering with the useful signal. The properties of the noise are that it is additive, which means that the noise is superimposed on the transmitted signal, it is white so the power density is constant for all frequencies, and it has a Gaussian distribution in the time domain with zero mean and variance σ2=N. A slowly time varying channel refers to channel with coherence time larger than the transmitted symbol duration. The performance of a fixed size averaging estimator in case of fast time-varying channels is subject to the buffering time. When the buffering time is smaller or equal to a portion of the coherence time the averaging process offers better performance than the conventional estimation, but when the buffering time exceeds this portion of the coherence time the performance of the averaging process degrades fast. So, an extension has been made to the averaging estimator that estimates the Doppler shift and thus the coherence time, where the channel could be assumed as stationary. The improved estimator called Adaptive Averaging Channel Estimator (AACE) is capable to adjust its buffer size and thus to average only successive Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) symbols that have the same channel distortions. The OFDM is a transmission method where instead of transmitting the data stream using only on carrier, the stream is divided into parallel sub-streams where the subcarriers conveying the sub-streams are orthogonal to each other. The use of the OFDM increases the symbol duration making it more robust against Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI), which the interference among successive transmitted symbols, and also divides the channel bandwidth into small sub-bandwidths preventing frequency selectivity because of the multipath nature of the radio channel. Simulations using the Rayleigh channel model were performed and the results clearly demonstrate the benefits of the AACE in the channel estimation process. The performance of the combination of AACE with Least Square estimation (AACE-LS) is superior to the conventional Least Square estimation especially for low Doppler shifts and it is close to the Linear Minimum Mean Square Error (LMMSE) estimation performance. Consequently, if the receiver has low computational resources and/or the channel statistics are unknown, then the AACE-LS estimator is a valid choice for modern radio receivers. Moreover, the proposed adaptive averaging process could be used in any OFDM system based on pilot aided channel estimation. In order to verify the superiority of the AACE algorithm, quantitative results are provided in terms of BER vs SNR. It is demonstrated that AACE-LS is 7dB more sensitive than the LS estimator
Blind Estimation of OFDM System Parameters for Automatic Signal Identification
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has gained worldwide popular ity in broadband wireless communications recently due to its high spectral efficiency and robust performance in multipath fading channels. A growing trend of smart receivers which can support and adapt to multiple OFDM based standards auto matically brings the necessity of identifying different standards by estimating OFDM system parameters without a priori information. Consequently, blind estimation and identification of OFDM system parameters has received considerable research atten tions. Many techniques have been developed for blind estimation of various OFDM parameters, whereas estimation of the sampling frequency is often ignored. Further more, the estimated sampling frequency of an OFDM signal has to be very accurate for data recovery due to the high sensitivity of OFDM signals to sampling clock offset. To address the aforementioned problems, we propose a two-step cyclostation- arity based algorithm with low computational complexity to precisely estimate the sampling frequency of a received oversampled OFDM signal. With this estimated sampling frequency and oversampling ratio, other OFDM system parameters, i.e., the number of subcarriers, symbol duration and cyclic prefix (CP) length can be es timated based on the cyclic property from CP sequentially. In addition, modulation scheme used in the OFDM can be classified based on the higher-order statistics (HOS) of the frequency domain OFDM signal.
All the proposed algorithms are verified by a lab testing system including a vec tor signal generator, a spectrum analyzer and a high speed digitizer. The evaluation results confirm the high precision and efficacy of the proposed algorithm in realistic scenarios
Channel Estimation Architectures for Mobile Reception in Emerging DVB Standards
Throughout this work, channel estimation techniques have been analyzed and proposed for moderate and very high mobility DVB (digital video broadcasting) receivers, focusing on the DVB-T2 (Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial 2) framework and the forthcoming DVB-NGH (Digital Video Broadcasting - Next Generation Handheld) standard. Mobility support is one of the key features of these DVB specifications, which try to deal with the challenge of enabling HDTV (high definition television) delivery at high vehicular speed.
In high-mobility scenarios, the channel response varies within an OFDM (orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing) block and the subcarriers are no longer orthogonal, which leads to the so-called ICI (inter-carrier interference), making the system performance drop severely. Therefore, in order to successfully decode the transmitted data, ICI-aware detectors are necessary and accurate CSI (channel state information), including the ICI terms, is required at the receiver.
With the aim of reducing the number of parameters required for such channel estimation while ensuring accurate CSI, BEM (basis expansion model) techniques have been analyzed and proposed for the high-mobility DVB-T2 scenario. A suitable clustered pilot structure has been proposed and its performance has been compared to the pilot patterns proposed in the standard. Different reception schemes that effectively cancel ICI in combination with BEM channel estimation have been proposed, including a Turbo scheme that includes a BP (belief propagation) based ICI canceler, a soft-input decision-directed BEM channel estimator and the LDPC (low-density parity check) decoder. Numerical results have been presented for the most common channel models, showing that the proposed receiver schemes allow good reception, even in receivers with extremely high mobility (up to 0.5 of normalized Doppler frequency).Doktoretza tesi honetan, hainbat kanal estimazio teknika ezberdin aztertu eta proposatu dira mugikortasun ertain eta handiko DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting) hartzaileentzat, bigarren belaunaldiko Lurreko Telebista Digitalean DVB-T2 (Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial 2 ) eta hurrengo DVB-NGH (Digital Video Broadcasting - Next Generation Handheld) estandarretan oinarrututa.
Iterative channel estimation techniques for multiple input multiple output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems
Thesis (Master)--Izmir Institute of Technology, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Izmir, 2007Includes bibliographical references (leaves: 77-78)Text in English; Abstract: Turkish and Englishxii, 78 leavesOrthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is well-known for its efficient high speed transmission and robustness to frequency-selective fading channels. On the other hand, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems have the ability to increase capacity and reliability of a wireless communication system compared to single-input single-output (SISO) systems. Hence, the integration of the two technologies has the potential to meet the ever growing demands of future communication systems. In these systems, channel estimation is very crucial to demodulate the data coherently. For a good channel estimation, spectral efficiency and lower computational complexity are two important points to be considered. In this thesis, we explore different channel estimation techniques in order to improve estimation performance by increasing the bandwidth efficiency and reducing the computational complexity for both SISO-OFDM and MIMO-OFDM systems. We first investigate pilot and Expectation-Maximization (EM)-based channel estimation techniques and compare their performances. Next, we explore different pilot arrangements by reducing the number of pilot symbols in one OFDM frame to improve bandwidth efficiency. We obtain the bit error rate and the channel estimation performance for these pilot arrangements. Then, in order to decrase the computational complexity, we propose an iterative channel estimation technique, which establishes a link between the decision block and channel estimation block using virtual subcarriers. We compare this proposed technique with EM-based channel estimation in terms of performance and complexity. These channel estimation techniques are also applied to STBC-OFDM and V-BLAST structured MIMO-OFDM systems. Finally, we investigate a joint EM-based channel estimation and signal detection technique for V-BLAST OFDM system
Timing and Carrier Synchronization in Wireless Communication Systems: A Survey and Classification of Research in the Last 5 Years
Timing and carrier synchronization is a fundamental requirement for any wireless communication system to work properly. Timing synchronization is the process by which a receiver node determines the correct instants of time at which to sample the incoming signal. Carrier synchronization is the process by which a receiver adapts the frequency and phase of its local carrier oscillator with those of the received signal. In this paper, we survey the literature over the last 5 years (2010–2014) and present a comprehensive literature review and classification of the recent research progress in achieving timing and carrier synchronization in single-input single-output (SISO), multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), cooperative relaying, and multiuser/multicell interference networks. Considering both single-carrier and multi-carrier communication systems, we survey and categorize the timing and carrier synchronization techniques proposed for the different communication systems focusing on the system model assumptions for synchronization, the synchronization challenges, and the state-of-the-art synchronization solutions and their limitations. Finally, we envision some future research directions
Solutions for New Terrestrial Broadcasting Systems Offering Simultaneously Stationary and Mobile Services
221 p.[EN]Since the first broadcasted TV signal was transmitted in the early decades of
the past century, the television broadcasting industry has experienced a series of
dramatic changes. Most recently, following the evolution from analogue to digital
systems, the digital dividend has become one of the main concerns of the
broadcasting industry. In fact, there are many international spectrum authorities
reclaiming part of the broadcasting spectrum to satisfy the growing demand of
other services, such as broadband wireless services, arguing that the TV services
are not very spectrum-efficient.
Apart from that, it must be taken into account that, even if up to now the
mobile broadcasting has not been considered a major requirement, this will
probably change in the near future. In fact, it is expected that the global mobile
data traffic will increase 11-fold between 2014 and 2018, and what is more, over
two thirds of the data traffic will be video stream by the end of that period.
Therefore, the capability to receive HD services anywhere with a mobile device is
going to be a mandatory requirement for any new generation broadcasting system.
The main objective of this work is to present several technical solutions that
answer to these challenges. In particular, the main questions to be solved are the
spectrum efficiency issue and the increasing user expectations of receiving high
quality mobile services. In other words, the main objective is to provide technical
solutions for an efficient and flexible usage of the terrestrial broadcasting spectrum
for both stationary and mobile services.
The first contributions of this scientific work are closely related to the study of
the mobile broadcast reception. Firstly, a comprehensive mathematical analysis of
the OFDM signal behaviour over time-varying channels is presented. In order to
maximize the channel capacity in mobile environments, channel estimation and
equalization are studied in depth. First, the most implemented equalization
solutions in time-varying scenarios are analyzed, and then, based on these existing
techniques, a new equalization algorithm is proposed for enhancing the receivers’
performance.
An alternative solution for improving the efficiency under mobile channel
conditions is treating the Inter Carrier Interference as another noise source.
Specifically, after analyzing the ICI impact and the existing solutions for reducing
the ICI penalty, a new approach based on the robustness of FEC codes is
presented. This new approach employs one dimensional algorithms at the receiver
and entrusts the ICI removing task to the robust forward error correction codes.
Finally, another major contribution of this work is the presentation of the
Layer Division Multiplexing (LDM) as a spectrum-efficient and flexible solution
for offering stationary and mobile services simultaneously. The comprehensive
theoretical study developed here verifies the improved spectrum efficiency,
whereas the included practical validation confirms the feasibility of the system and
presents it as a very promising multiplexing technique, which will surely be a strong
