The work presented in this thesis is related to the study of the longitudinal spin structure of the nucleon. The aim is to determine the contribution to the spin 1/2 of the proton in terms of its constituents, quarks and gluons. The analysis is performed on the data taken with the COMPASS experiment, which benefits from a polarised muon beam at 200 GeV scattered off polarised protons from an ammonia target of 1.2 m long. The double longitudinal spin asymmetry of deep inelastic scattering cross-Section. The spin-Dependent structure function of the proton g₁p is derived from these measurements, which extend the kinematic world coverage to unexplored region so far (0,0036 < x< 0,57; 1,03 < Q² (GeV/c)² < 96 and 23 < W² (GeV/c)² < 320).The results obtained with a high statistical precision are included in a Next-To-Leading order QCD analysis of world g₁p, g₁d and g₁n (proton, deuteron and neutron) data to parametrise the polarised quark and gluon distributions. The g₁ world coverage of the x and Q² kinematic domain, which is a key point in the sensitivity to the gluon polarisation ΔG, turns out to be too limited for an accurate ΔG determination. Nevertheless, the QCD analysis allows to determine the quark spin contributions to the proton spin to 0.26<ΔΣ<0.33 at Q² = 3 (GeV/c)² in the MSbar scheme. The dominant uncertainty on ΔΣ is related to the choice of functional forms assumed in the fit. Finally, the Bjorken sum rule, which constitutes a fundamental test of QCD, is verified on the COMPASS data alone with a precision of 9%.Cette thèse présente un travail relatif à l'étude de la structure en spin longitudinal du nucléon.

Functional neuroimaging (fMRI, PET and MEG): what do we measure?

peer reviewedFunctional cerebral imaging techniques allow the in vivo study of human cognitive and sensorimotor functions in physiological or pathological conditions. In this paper, we review the advantages and limitations of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetoencephalography (MEG). fMRI and PET measure haemodynamic changes induced by regional changes in neuronal activity. These techniques have a high spatial resolution (a few millimeters), but a poor temporal resolution (a few seconds to several minutes). Electroencephalogram (EEG) and MEG measure the neuronal electrical or magnetic activity with a high temporal resolution (i.e., milliseconds) albeit with a poorer spatial resolution (i.e., a few millimeters to one centimeter). The combination of these different neuroimaging techniques allows studying different components of the brain's activity (e.g., neurovascular coupling, electromagnetic activity) with both a high temporal and spatial resolution

Synthesis and Physical Properties of 3d, 4d and 5d Transition Metal Compounds

In this thesis I study the synthesis and basic physical properties characterization on 3dd, 4dd and 5dd transition metal compounds. Great success has been obtained in 3dd transition metal compounds, in which the electric states are well localized due to the large on-site Coulomb repulsion UU. Most stoichiometric 3dd transition metal oxides are antiferromagnetic Mott insulators. Among them, low dimensional geometrically frustrated systems, such as SS = 1/2 Kagome lattice antiferromagnets, are at the forefront of condensed matter research. Recently, high-quality single crystals of Cu2OSO4\mathrm{Cu_2OSO_4}, which are spin-1/2 antiferromagnets with low dimensional magnetism, have been successfully synthesized. The measurements of specific heat, susceptibility and magnetization were performed on this material. We found that the Kagome-like compound Cu2OSO4\mathrm{Cu_2OSO_4} shows typical signatures for a canted-AFM ground state with a weak ferromagnetic component. On the other hand, 4d4d transition metal compounds were considered as weakly correlated systems because the electron correlation is expected to be weaker in 4d4d transition metal compounds compared with the 3d3d ones. The 4d4d ones naturally bridge two different regimes of the strongly correlated 3d3d compounds and the 5d5d compounds. Most notably, for instance, it is intriguing that seemingly similar Ca2RuO4\mathrm{Ca_2RuO_4} and Sr2RuO4\mathrm{Sr_2RuO_4} display totally different behavior: the former is a Mott insulator while the latter is metallic and becomes superconducting at low temperature. Here we report the synthesis of large single crystals of MoPO5\mathrm{MoPO_5}, and present their magnetic and thermodynamic properties. We found that the 4d14d^1 compound MoPO5\mathrm{MoPO_5} is orbitally quenched and orders into an antiferromagnet with the moments along cc axis. Spin-flop transition is observed which indicates magnetic anisotropy. 5d5d orbitals are more extended and the Coulomb repulsion UU values are expected to be further reduced compared with those of 3d3d and 4d4d transition metal compounds. Thus, insulating behaviors in 5d5d transition metal compounds have been puzzling. A possible reason is the strong spin-orbit coupling. Here we show the ambient-pressure synthesis and physical properties of a new all-Ir6+^{6+} iridate Ba8Al2IrO14\mathrm{Ba_8Al_2IrO_{14}} and a novel layered iridate Ba21Ir9O43\mathrm{Ba_{21}Ir_9O_{43}}. The synthesis, crystal structure, transport, and magnetic properties of them have been reported. Ba8Al2IrO14\mathrm{Ba_8Al_2IrO_{14}} is a pp-type band insulator and shows antiferromagnetic couplings but display no order down to 2 K. Ba21Ir9O43\mathrm{Ba_{21}Ir_9O_{43}} is an insulator with antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss behavior, where a magnetic transition is suppressed down to low temperature of 9 K despite the large Curie-Weiss temperature of 90-90 K. We also performed the pressure-dependent resistivity measurements of the 5d5d compound Ir0.95Pt0.05Te2\mathrm{Ir_{0.95}Pt_{0.05}Te_{2}} and found that the charge order with qq=(1/5,0,1/5) dimer configuration is introduced and the superconductivity undergoes a dimensionality cross-over from 3 dimension to 2 dimension under pressure
