    Get PDF
The use of social media for personal, professional and business purposes is rising quickly, as are the number of tools available. Economic development agencies have an excellent opportunity to use social media to effectively deliver their programs and services. Social media tools provide timely, engaging, interactive, targeted and low-cost ways to market a community, gain intelligence, and communicate and build relationships with stakeholders. To make effective use of social media, economic developers must understand the underlying purpose of social media and develop strategies to implement it effectively. Using research and recommendations from social media experts in a variety of disciplines, this paper examines how social media has changed marketing and communications, the purpose of social media, possible applications of social media in economic development, and how to develop an effective social media strategy. By taking a strategic approach to social media, economic developers can use it to achieve their goals. Keywords: social media, economic development, social media strategy, tools and techniques, investment attraction marketin

Novel methods for manipulating ion types in the solution and gas phases for the structural analysis of biomolecules using Mass Spectrometry

    Get PDF
Mass Spectrometry has become a valuable tool for the analysis of a variety of molecules, making it applicable to many fields. The advent of nanoelectrospray ionization (nESI) as a soft/low energy ionization technique has enabled the analysis of large, intact biomolecules. Most mass spectrometry experiments consist of three main steps: ionization, probe step(s), and mass analysis. The present work focuses on a variety of methods for altering ion types at various stages of the mass spectrometry experiment to affect ion fragmentation. Ion types can be manipulated in the solution/droplet phases using novel nESI emitters, generated from borosilicate theta capillaries. These nESI emitters enable the mixing of two solutions as they are sprayed into the mass spectrometer. This technique has been used to manipulate protein charge states (i.e. protein folding and unfolding) and to demonstrate peptide/protein analyte-reagent complex formation and covalent modification. This technique provides a simple and inexpensive method for manipulating ion types as the ions are generated during the electrospray process on the sub-millisecond timescale. These nESI emitters are also expanded to longer solution mixing times through the use of electroosmotic flow (EOF) between the two channels of the theta capillary prior to mass analysis. This work presents initial efforts to use theta capillaries to develop a lab-in-a-tip to provide for the manipulation of ion types on short timescales just prior to mass analysis. Additionally, ion types can be manipulated once the ions are in the gas-phase and trapped inside the mass spectrometer via ion/ion reactions. This work presents ion/ion reactions with reagents containing chromophores, which can be activated via ultraviolet photodissociation (UVPD) to generate radical peptide cations. Altering ion types in this way provides complementary sequence information upon collision induced dissociation (CID) when compared to CID of the even electron species. The McLuckey group is well known for work with ion/ion reactions to modify ion types and to conjugate biomolecules through covalent chemistry in the gas-phase. However, the kinetics and energetics of these reactions are not well known. This work will provide a method for measuring ion/ion reaction kinetics using dipolar DC CID (DDC-CID), which was previously developed in the McLuckey lab. Knowledge of gas-phase ion/ion reaction kinetics and energetics will provide insights for improving current ion/ion reaction efficiencies as well as for improving reagent design for future ion/ion reaction

The Supply Chain (SC) falls within the scope of inter-company co-operation and the organizational dynamic of new organizational forms and comprises many activities, processes and systems. It is the duty of each partner (participant) to get to know the key factors to success and how each interacts with the others. The connectors, given that each relationship plays a crucial role, are of equal value in continuously satisfying demand. Trust is the most important connector with a view to success. All the other relationships made are based on trust. Consequently, this paper lays stress on the Supply Chain network as a “network of values” and on the different dimensions of shared trust, the strategies based on trust and the suggestions for using trust as the key factor in the operational, tactical and strategic success of an SC network.the supply chain, trust, inter-company, cooperation

Community as Canvas: The Power of Culture in the Emergence of Intelligent Communities

    Get PDF
Intelligent Communities are cities and regions that use information and communications technologies (ICT) to build prosperous economies, solve social problems and enrich their cultures in the 21st Century. Many people are familiar with the concept of the Smart City, which turns to technology for solutions to problems from traffic congestion to leakage from water mains, public safety to parking tickets. The Intelligent Community is the next evolutionary step. Intelligent Communities turn to technology not just to save money or make things work better: they create high quality employment, increase citizen participation and make themselves great places to live, work, start a business and prosper across generations. Each year, the Forum presents an awards program for Intelligent Communities. The program salutes their achievements in building those inclusive, prosperous economies on a foundation of ICT. In the process, it gathers data for ICF's research programs, which the Forum shares with other communities around the world. The Awards are divided into three phases, and the analysis becomes more detailed andrigorous at each successive stage

Supercharging academic writing with generative AI: framework, techniques, and caveats

Academic writing is an indispensable yet laborious part of the research enterprise. This Perspective maps out principles and methods for using generative artificial intelligence (AI), specifically large language models (LLMs), to elevate the quality and efficiency of academic writing. We introduce a human-AI collaborative framework that delineates the rationale (why), process (how), and nature (what) of AI engagement in writing. The framework pinpoints both short-term and long-term reasons for engagement and their underlying mechanisms (e.g., cognitive offloading and imaginative stimulation). It reveals the role of AI throughout the writing process, conceptualized through a two-stage model for human-AI collaborative writing, and the nature of AI assistance in writing, represented through a model of writing-assistance types and levels. Building on this framework, we describe effective prompting techniques for incorporating AI into the writing routine (outlining, drafting, and editing) as well as strategies for maintaining rigorous scholarship, adhering to varied journal policies, and avoiding overreliance on AI. Ultimately, the prudent integration of AI into academic writing can ease the communication burden, empower authors, accelerate discovery, and promote diversity in science.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, 1 bo

1 online resource (v, 45 p.) : col. ill.Includes abstract and appendix.Includes bibliographical references (p. 39-44).Empathy, though not a new concept in the medical profession, is a new phenomenon discussed in management and leadership literature. Leaders need to be mindful and critical of where they get their information about how and when to be empathetic in business. The best knowledge a leader can use is supported by elevated research. The purpose of this study is to examine the evaluated research about leadership and empathy to better understand what evidence supports the claims being made in popular press about the role of empathy in leadership. The findings from this study reveal four themes -- ethics and leadership, educational institutions role in teaching empathy, trust, and emotional intelligence. The findings indicate that there is a limited amount of evaluated research evidence to support the directions espoused in popular press articles. Though many academics suggest that empathy is important for leaders to foster in order to reach objectives and better the bottom line, more research needs to be conducted
