Politeness and bias in dialogue summarization: two exploratory studies
In this chapter, two empirical pilot studies on the role of politeness in dialogue summarization are described. In these studies, a collection of four dialogues was used. Each dialogue was automatically generated by the NECA system and the politeness of the dialogue participants was
systematically manipulated. Subjects were divided into groups who had to summarize the dialogues from a particular dialogue participantâs point of view or the point of view of an impartial observer. In the first study, there were no other constraints. In the second study, the summarizers were restricted to summaries whose length did not exceed 10% of the number of words in the dialogue that was being summarized. Amongst other things, it was found that the politeness of the interaction is
included more often in summaries of dialogues that deviate from what would be considered normal or unmarked. A comparison of the results of the two studies suggests that the extent to which politeness is reported is not affected by how long a summary is allowed to be. It was also found that the point of view of the summarizer influences which information is included in the summary and how it is presented. This finding did not seem to be affected by the constraint in our second study on the summary length
Sentiment and behaviour annotation in a corpus of dialogue summaries
This paper proposes a scheme for sentiment annotation. We show how the task can be made tractable by focusing on one of the many aspects of sentiment: sentiment as it is recorded in behaviour reports of people and their interactions. Together with a number of measures for supporting the reliable application of the scheme, this allows us to obtain sufficient to good agreement scores (in terms of Krippendorf's alpha) on three key dimensions: polarity, evaluated party and type of clause. Evaluation of the scheme is carried out through the annotation of an existing corpus of dialogue summaries (in English and Portuguese) by nine annotators. Our contribution to the field is twofold: (i) a reliable multi-dimensional annotation scheme for sentiment in behaviour reports; and (ii) an annotated corpus that was used for testing the reliability of the scheme and which is made available to the research community
Are we summarizing the right way? : a survey of dialogue summarization data sets
Dialogue summarization is a long-standing task in the field of NLP, and several data sets with dialogues and associated human-written summaries of different styles exist. However, it is unclear for which type of dialogue which type of summary is most appropriate. For this reason, we apply a linguistic model of dialogue types to derive matching summary items and NLP tasks. This allows us to map existing dialogue summarization data sets into this model and identify gaps and potential directions for future work. As part of this process, we also provide an extensive overview of existing dialogue summarization data sets
Hybrid discourse modeling and summarization for a speech-to-speech translation system
The thesis discusses two parts of the speech-to-speech translation system VerbMobil: the dialogue model and one of its applications, multilingual summary generation. In connection with the dialogue model, two topics are of special interest: (a) the use of a default unification operation called overlay as the fundamental operation for dialogue management; and (b) an intentional model that is able to describe intentions in dialogue on five levels in a language-independent way. Besides the actual generation algorithm developed, we present a comprehensive evaluation of the summarization functionality. In addition to precision and recall, a new characterization - confabulation - is defined that provides a more precise understanding of the performance of complex natural language processing systems.Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt hauptsĂ€chlich zwei Themen, die fĂŒr das VerbMobil-System, ein Ăbersetzungssystem gesprochener Spontansprache, entwickelt wurden: das Dialogmodell und als Applikation die multilinguale Generierung von Ergebnissprotokollen. FĂŒr die Dialogmodellierung sind zwei Themen von besonderem Interesse. Das erste behandelt eine in der vorliegenden Arbeit formalisierte Default-Unifikations-Operation namens Overlay, die als fundamentale Operation fĂŒr Diskursverarbeitung dient. Das zweite besteht aus einem intentionalen Modell, das Intentionen eines Dialogs auf fĂŒnf Ebenen in einer sprachunabhĂ€ngigen ReprĂ€sentation darstellt. Neben dem fĂŒr die Protokollgenerierung entwickelten Generierungsalgorithmus wird eine umfassende Evaluation zur ProtokollgenerierungsfunktionalitĂ€t vorgestellt. Intercultural activities in English language teaching: a contribution to understand English as a lingua franca (ELF)
Currently, English has acquired the status of Lingua Franca enabling world communication (CRYSTAL, 2003; SEIDLHOLFER, 2011). However, in the context of English language teaching (ELT), it is necessary to develop the idea of what the concept of ELF may contribute to studentsâ awareness and development. This is even more relevant when we talk about pre service teachers who are in the process of learning important abilities for teaching English in a globalized context (SEIDLHOFER, 2011; SIQUEIRA, 2008; CRYSTAL, 2003; ORTIZ, 2003). One of English as a Lingua Francaâs (ELF) characteristics is that it considers the nature of interculturality allowed by language (SIQUEIRA, 2008). The objective of this paper is to observe how students may understand the concept of ELF through the development of activities that promote intercultural discussions in an EFL tertiary context in Alagoinhas, Bahia, Brazil. The main question to investigate is in what ways a proposal of activities which consider intercultural aspects can contribute to understand the concept of ELF and therefore help in the education of Englishâs future teachers in the country. In order to develop the research, some activities which consider intercultural aspects of texts are proposed to the teachers-to-be who will take part in the research, and some observations and discussions are performed before, during and after the classes. The analysis is developed by considering an intercultural dialogue based on the view of: a) language and culture as places of interaction (KRAMSCH, 1998; MENDES, 2008); b) focus on the language meanings produced and on the access to new possibilities of representation (KRAMSCH, 1993); c) selection and production of materials with authentic contents and cultural meanings (MENDES, 2008) which is possible through the understanding of ELF (SEIDLHOFER, 2011)
