Successive interference cancellation aided sphere decoder for multi-input multi-output systems
In this paper, sphere decoding algorithms are proposed for both hard detection and soft processing in multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems. Both algorithms are based on the complex tree structure to reduce the complexity of searching the unique minimum Euclidean distance and multiple Euclidean distances, and obtain the corresponding transmit symbol vectors. The novel complex hard sphere decoder for MIMO detection is presented first, and then the soft processing of a novel sphere decoding algorithm for list generation is discussed. The performance and complexity of the proposed techniques are demonstrated via simulations in terms of bit error rate (BER), the number of nodes accessed and floating-point operations (FLOPS)
Adaptive and Iterative Multi-Branch MMSE Decision Feedback Detection Algorithms for MIMO Systems
In this work, decision feedback (DF) detection algorithms based on multiple
processing branches for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) spatial multiplexing
systems are proposed. The proposed detector employs multiple cancellation
branches with receive filters that are obtained from a common matrix inverse
and achieves a performance close to the maximum likelihood detector (MLD).
Constrained minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) receive filters designed with
constraints on the shape and magnitude of the feedback filters for the
multi-branch MMSE DF (MB-MMSE-DF) receivers are presented. An adaptive
implementation of the proposed MB-MMSE-DF detector is developed along with a
recursive least squares-type algorithm for estimating the parameters of the
receive filters when the channel is time-varying. A soft-output version of the
MB-MMSE-DF detector is also proposed as a component of an iterative detection
and decoding receiver structure. A computational complexity analysis shows that
the MB-MMSE-DF detector does not require a significant additional complexity
over the conventional MMSE-DF detector, whereas a diversity analysis discusses
the diversity order achieved by the MB-MMSE-DF detector. Simulation results
show that the MB-MMSE-DF detector achieves a performance superior to existing
suboptimal detectors and close to the MLD, while requiring significantly lower
complexity.Comment: 10 figures, 3 tables; IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications,

Multifunctional MIMO systems: A combined diversity and multiplexing design perspective
In this treatise we investigate the design alternatives of different multiple-input multiple-output schemes while considering the attainable diversity gains, multiplexing gains, and beamforming gains. Following a brief classification of different MIMO schemes, where the different MIMO schemes are categorized as diversity techniques, multiplexing schemes, multiple access arrangements, and beamforming techniques, we introduce the family of multifunctional MIMOs. These multifunctional MIMOs are capable of combining the benefits of several MIMO schemes and hence attaining improved performance in terms of both their bit error rate as well as throughput. The family of multifunctional MIMOs combines the benefits of both space-time coding and the Bell Labs layered space-time scheme as well as those of beamforming. We also introduce the idea of layered steered space-time spreading, which combines the benefits of space-time spreading, V-BLAST, and beamforming with those of the generalized multicarrier direct sequence code-division multiple access concept. Additionally, we compare the attainable diversity, multiplexing, and beamforming gains of the different MIMO schemes in order to document the advantages of multifunctional MIMOs over conventional MIMO schemes
Parallel Interference Cancellation Based Turbo Space-Time Equalization in the SDMA Uplink
A novel Parallel Interference Cancellation (PIC) based turbo Space Time Equalizer (STE) structure designed for multiple antenna assisted uplink receivers is introduced. The proposed receiver structure allows the employment of non-linear type of detectors such as the Bayesian Decision Feedback (DF) assisted turbo STE or the Maximum Aposteriori (MAP) STE, while operating at a moderate computational cost. Receivers based on the proposed structure outperform the linear turbo detector benchmarker based on the Minimum Mean-Squared Error (MMSE) criterion, even if the latter aims for jointly detecting all transmitters’ signals. Additionally the PIC based receiver is capable of equalizing non-linear binary pre-coded channels. The performance difference between the presented algorithms is discussed using Extrinsic Information Transferfunction (EXIT) charts. Index Terms—PIC, EXIT chart, precoding, Bayesian, STE
Non-coherent successive relaying and cooperation: principles, designs, and applications
Cooperative communication is capable of forming a virtual antenna array for each node (user) in a network by allowing the nodes (users) to relay the messages of others to the destination. Such a relay aided network may be viewed as a distributed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system relying on the spatially distributed single antennas of the cooperating mobiles, which avoids the correlation of the antenna elements routinely encountered in conventional MIMO systems and hence attains the maximum achievable diversity gain. Therefore, the family of cooperative communication techniques may be regarded as a potential solution for future wireless networks. However, constrained by the half-duplex transmit/receive mode of most practical transceivers, the cooperative networks may impose a severe 50% throughput loss. As a remedy, successive relaying can be employed, which is capable of mimicking a full-duplex relay and thereby recovering much of the 50% throughput loss. Furthermore, for the sake of bypassing power-hungry and potentially excessive-complexity channel estimation, noncoherent detection techniques may be employed for multiple-antenna aided systems, because estimating all the associated channels may become unrealistic. Explicitly, the mobile-stations acting as relays cannot be realistically expected to estimate the source-to-relay channels. In order to motivate further research on noncoherent successive relaying aided systems, a comprehensive review of its basic concepts, fundamental principles, practical transceiver designs and open challenges is provide
