    A channel subspace post-filtering approach to adaptive equalization

Underwater acoustic communications is one such type of wireless communications in which the channel is highly dynamic and the amount of ISI due to multipath is relatively large. In the underwater acoustic channel, associated with each of the deterministic propagation paths are macro-multipath fluctuations which depend on large scale environmental features and geometry, and micro-multipath fluctuations which are dependent on small scale environmental inhomogeneities. For arrivals which are unsaturated or partially saturated, the fluctuations in ISI are dominated by the macro-multipath fluctuations resulting in correlated fluctuations between different taps of the sampled channel impulse response. Traditional recursive least squares (RLS) algorithms used for adapting channel equalizers do not exploit this structure. A channel subspace post-filtering algorithm that treats the least squares channel estimate as a noisy time series and exploits the channel correlation structure to reduce the channel estimation error is presented. The improvement in performance of the algorithm with respect to traditional least squares algorithms is predicted theoretically, and demonstrated using both simulation and experimental data. An adaptive equalizer structure that explicitly uses this improved estimate of the channel impulse response is discussed. The improvement in performance of such an equalizer due to the use of the post-filtered estimate is also predicted theoretically, and demonstrated using both simulation and experimental data.This research was supported by an ONR Graduate Traineeship Award Grant #N00014-00-10049

    Analysis of and techniques for adaptive equalization for underwater acoustic communication

Acoustics remains the only practical means of accomplishing long-range communication in the ocean. The acoustic communication channel is fraught with difficulties including limited available bandwidth, long delay-spread, time-variability, and Doppler spreading. These difficulties reduce the reliability of the communication system and make high data-rate communication challenging. Adaptive decision feedback equalization is a common method to compensate for distortions introduced by the underwater acoustic channel. Limited work has been done thus far to introduce the physics of the underwater channel into improving and better understanding the operation of a decision feedback equalizer. This thesis examines how to use physical models to improve the reliability and reduce the computational complexity of the decision feedback equalizer. The specific topics covered by this work are: how to handle channel estimation errors for the time varying channel, how to use angular constraints imposed by the environment into an array receiver, what happens when there is a mismatch between the true channel order and the estimated channel order, and why there is a performance difference between the direct adaptation and channel estimation based methods for computing the equalizer coefficients.     Estimation and tracking of rapidly time-varying broadband acoustic communication channels

The very shallow water wideband channel has three distinct features: large dimension caused by extensive delay spread; limited number of degrees of freedom (DOF) due to resolvable paths and inter-path correlations; and rapid fluctuations induced by scattering from the moving sea surface. Traditional LS estimation techniques often fail to reconcile the rapid fluctuations with the large dimensionality. Subspace based approaches with DOF reduction are confronted with unstable subspace structure subject to significant changes over a short period of time. Based on state-space channel modeling, the first part of this thesis develops algorithms that jointly estimate the channel as well as its dynamics. Algorithms based on the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and the Expectation Maximization (EM) approach respectively are developed. Analysis shows conceptual parallels, including an identical second-order innovation form shared by the EKF modification and the suboptimal EM, and the shared issue of parameter identifiability due to channel structure, reflected as parameter unobservability in EKF and insufficient excitation in EM. Modifications of both algorithms, including a two-model based EKF and a subspace EM algorithm which selectively track dominant taps and reduce prediction error, are proposed to overcome the identifiability issue. The second part of the thesis develops algorithms that explicitly find the sparse estimate of the delay-Doppler spread function. The study contributes to a better understanding of the channel physical constraints on algorithm design and potential performance improvement.     Vector sensors for underwater : acoustic communications

    Acoustic vector sensors measure acoustic pressure and directional components separately. A claimed advantage of vector sensors over pressure-only arrays is the directional information in a collocated device, making it an attractive option for size-restricted applications. The employment of vector sensors as a receiver for underwater communications is relatively new, where the inherent directionality, usually related to particle velocity, is used for signal-to-noise gain and intersymbol interference mitigation. The fundamental question is how to use vector sensor directional components to bene t communications, which this work seeks to answer and to which it contributes by performing: analysis of acoustic pressure and particle velocity components; comparison of vector sensor receiver structures exploring beamforming and diversity; quanti cation of adapted receiver structures in distinct acoustic scenarios and using di erent types of vector sensors. Analytic expressions are shown for pressure and particle velocity channels, revealing extreme cases of correlation between vector sensors' components. Based on the correlation hypothesis, receiver structures are tested with simulated and experimental data. In a rst approach, called vector sensor passive time-reversal, we take advantage of the channel diversity provided by the inherent directivity of vector sensors' components. In a second approach named vector sensor beam steering, pressure and particle velocity components are combined, resulting in a steered beam for a speci c direction. At last, a joint beam steering and passive time-reversal is proposed, adapted for vector sensors. Tested with two distinct experimental datasets, where vector sensors are either positioned on the bottom or tied to a vessel, a broad performance comparison shows the potential of each receiver structure. Analysis of results suggests that the beam steering structure is preferable for shorter source-receiver ranges, whereas the passive time-reversal is preferable for longer ranges. Results show that the joint beam steering and passive time-reversal is the best option to reduce communication error with robustness along the range.Sensores vetoriais acústicos (em inglês, acoustic vector sensors) são dispositivos que medem, alem da pressão acústica, a velocidade de partícula.     dissertationThis dissertation addresses several key challenges in multiple-antenna communications, including information-theoretical analysis of channel capacity, capacity-achieving signaling design, and practical statistical detection algorithms. The first part of the thesis studies the capacity limits of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple access channel (MAC) via virtual representation (VR) model. The VR model captures the physical scattering environment via channel gains in the angular domain, and hence is a realistic MIMO channel model that includes many existing channel models as special cases. This study provides analytical characterization of the optimal input distribution that achieves the sum-capacity of MAC-VR. It also investigates the optimality of beamforming, which is a simple scalar coding strategy desirable in practice. For temporally correlated channels, beamforming codebook designs are proposed that can efficiently exploit channel correlation. The second part of the thesis focuses on statistical detection for time-varying frequency-selective channels. The proposed statistical detectors are developed based on Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques. The complexity of such detectors grows linearly in system dimensions, which renders them applicable to inter-symbol-interference (ISI) channels with long delay spread, for which the traditional trellis-based detectors fail due to prohibitive complexity. The proposed MCMC detectors provide substantial gain over the de facto turbo minimum-mean square-error (MMSE) detector for both synthetic channel and underwater acoustic (UWA) channels. The effectiveness of the proposed MCMC detectors is successfully validated through experimental data collected from naval at-sea experiments

    High-resolution sonar DF system

    One of the fundamental problems of sonar systems is the determination of the bearings of underwater sources/targets. The classical solution to this problem, the 'Conventional Beamformer', uses the outputs from the individual sensors of an acoustic array to form a beam which is swept across the search sector. The resolution of this method is limited by the beam width and narrowing this beam to enhance the resolution may have some practical problems, especially in low frequency sonar, because of the physical size of the array needed. During the past two decades an enormous amount of work has been done to develop new algorithms for resolution enhancements beyond that of the Conventional Beamformer. However, most of these methods have been based on computer simulations and very little has been published on the practical implementation of these algorithms. One of the main reasons for this has been the lack of hardware that can handle the relatively heavy computational load of these algorithms. However, there have been great advances in semiconductor and computer technologies in the last few years which have led to the availability of more powerful computational and storage devices. These devices have opened the door to the possibility of implementing these high-resolution Direction Finding (DF) algorithms in real sonar systems. The work presented in this thesis describes a practical implementation of some of the high-resolution DF algorithms in a simple sonar system that has been designed and built for this purpose.
