Expanding the Family of Grassmannian Kernels: An Embedding Perspective
Modeling videos and image-sets as linear subspaces has proven beneficial for
many visual recognition tasks. However, it also incurs challenges arising from
the fact that linear subspaces do not obey Euclidean geometry, but lie on a
special type of Riemannian manifolds known as Grassmannian. To leverage the
techniques developed for Euclidean spaces (e.g, support vector machines) with
subspaces, several recent studies have proposed to embed the Grassmannian into
a Hilbert space by making use of a positive definite kernel. Unfortunately,
only two Grassmannian kernels are known, none of which -as we will show- is
universal, which limits their ability to approximate a target function
arbitrarily well. Here, we introduce several positive definite Grassmannian
kernels, including universal ones, and demonstrate their superiority over
previously-known kernels in various tasks, such as classification, clustering,
sparse coding and hashing
Optimal approximate matrix product in terms of stable rank
We prove, using the subspace embedding guarantee in a black box way, that one
can achieve the spectral norm guarantee for approximate matrix multiplication
with a dimensionality-reducing map having
rows. Here is the maximum stable rank, i.e. squared ratio of
Frobenius and operator norms, of the two matrices being multiplied. This is a
quantitative improvement over previous work of [MZ11, KVZ14], and is also
optimal for any oblivious dimensionality-reducing map. Furthermore, due to the
black box reliance on the subspace embedding property in our proofs, our
theorem can be applied to a much more general class of sketching matrices than
what was known before, in addition to achieving better bounds. For example, one
can apply our theorem to efficient subspace embeddings such as the Subsampled
Randomized Hadamard Transform or sparse subspace embeddings, or even with
subspace embedding constructions that may be developed in the future.
Our main theorem, via connections with spectral error matrix multiplication
shown in prior work, implies quantitative improvements for approximate least
squares regression and low rank approximation. Our main result has also already
been applied to improve dimensionality reduction guarantees for -means
clustering [CEMMP14], and implies new results for nonparametric regression
[YPW15].
We also separately point out that the proof of the "BSS" deterministic
row-sampling result of [BSS12] can be modified to show that for any matrices
of stable rank at most , one can achieve the spectral norm
guarantee for approximate matrix multiplication of by deterministically
sampling rows that can be found in polynomial
time. The original result of [BSS12] was for rank instead of stable rank. Our
observation leads to a stronger version of a main theorem of [KMST10].Comment: v3: minor edits; v2: fixed one step in proof of Theorem 9 which was

Extrinsic local regression on manifold-valued data
We propose an extrinsic regression framework for modeling data with manifold
valued responses and Euclidean predictors. Regression with manifold responses
has wide applications in shape analysis, neuroscience, medical imaging and many
other areas. Our approach embeds the manifold where the responses lie onto a
higher dimensional Euclidean space, obtains a local regression estimate in that
space, and then projects this estimate back onto the image of the manifold.
Outside the regression setting both intrinsic and extrinsic approaches have
been proposed for modeling i.i.d manifold-valued data. However, to our
knowledge our work is the first to take an extrinsic approach to the regression
problem. The proposed extrinsic regression framework is general,
computationally efficient and theoretically appealing. Asymptotic distributions
and convergence rates of the extrinsic regression estimates are derived and a
large class of examples are considered indicating the wide applicability of our
approach
