    Bibliographic Review on Distributed Kalman Filtering

    In recent years, a compelling need has arisen to understand the effects of distributed information structures on estimation and filtering. In this paper, a bibliographical review on distributed Kalman filtering (DKF) is provided.\ud The paper contains a classification of different approaches and methods involved to DKF. The applications of DKF are also discussed and explained separately. A comparison of different approaches is briefly carried out. Focuses on the contemporary research are also addressed with emphasis on the practical applications of the techniques. An exhaustive list of publications, linked directly or indirectly to DKF in the open literature, is compiled to provide an overall picture of different developing aspects of this area

    Power delay profile and noise variance estimation for OFDM

    In this letter, we present cyclic-prefix (CP) based noise-variance and power-delay-profile estimators for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Signal correlation due to the use of the CP is exploited without requiring additional pilot symbols. A heuristic estimator and a class of approximate maximum likelihood (ML) estimators are proposed. The proposed algorithms can be applied to both unitary and non-unitary constellations. These algorithms can be readily used for applications such as minimum mean-square error (MMSE) channel estimation

    Gain-constrained recursive filtering with stochastic nonlinearities and probabilistic sensor delays

The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2013 IEEE.This paper is concerned with the gain-constrained recursive filtering problem for a class of time-varying nonlinear stochastic systems with probabilistic sensor delays and correlated noises. The stochastic nonlinearities are described by statistical means that cover the multiplicative stochastic disturbances as a special case. The phenomenon of probabilistic sensor delays is modeled by introducing a diagonal matrix composed of Bernoulli distributed random variables taking values of 1 or 0, which means that the sensors may experience randomly occurring delays with individual delay characteristics. The process noise is finite-step autocorrelated. The purpose of the addressed gain-constrained filtering problem is to design a filter such that, for all probabilistic sensor delays, stochastic nonlinearities, gain constraint as well as correlated noises, the cost function concerning the filtering error is minimized at each sampling instant, where the filter gain satisfies a certain equality constraint. A new recursive filtering algorithm is developed that ensures both the local optimality and the unbiasedness of the designed filter at each sampling instant which achieving the pre-specified filter gain constraint.     In recent years, the study of networked control systems (NCSs) has gradually become an active research area due to the advantages of using networked media in many aspects such as the ease of maintenance and installation, the large flexibility and the low cost. It is well known that the devices in networks are mutually connected via communication cables that are of limited capacity. Therefore, some network-induced phenomena have inevitably emerged in the areas of signal processing and control engineering. These phenomena include, but are not limited to, network-induced communication delays, missing data, signal quantization, saturations, and channel fading. All the system parameters are time-varying and the uncertainty enters into the state matrix. The measurement missing phenomenon occurs in a random way, and the missing probability for each sensor is governed by an individual random variable satisfying a certain probabilistic distribution in the interval . The stochastic nonlinearities under consideration here are described by statistical means which can cover several classes of well-studied nonlinearities. Sufficient conditions are derived for a finite-horizon filter to satisfy both the estimation error variance constraints and the prescribed H ∞ performance requirement. These conditions are expressed in terms of the feasibility of a series of recursive linear matrix inequalities (RLMIs).     Second-Order Fault Tolerant Extended Kalman Filter for Discrete Time Nonlinear Systems

    As missing sensor data may severely degrade the overall system performance and stability, reliable state estimation is of great importance in modern data-intensive control, computing, and power systems applications. Aiming at providing a more robust and resilient state estimation technique, this paper presents a novel second-order fault-tolerant extended Kalman filter estimation framework for discrete-time stochastic nonlinear systems under sensor failures, bounded observer-gain perturbation, extraneous noise, and external disturbances condition. The failure mechanism of multiple sensors is assumed to be independent of each other with various malfunction rates. The proposed approach is a locally unbiased, minimum estimation error covariance based nonlinear observer designed for dynamic state estimation under these conditions. It has been successfully applied to a benchmark target-trajectory tracking application. Computer simulation studies have demonstrated that the proposed second-order fault-tolerant extended Kalman filter provides more accurate estimation results, in comparison with traditional first- and second-order extended Kalman filter. Experimental results have demonstrated that the proposed second-order fault-tolerant extended Kalman filter can serve as a powerful alternative to the existing nonlinear estimation approaches

    Optimal linear filter design for systems with correlation in the measurement matrices and noises: recursive algorithm and applications

    This paper addresses the optimal least-squares linear estimation problem for a class of discrete-time stochastic systems with random parameter matrices and correlated additive noises. The system presents the following main features: (1) one-step correlated and cross-correlated random parameter matrices in the observation equation are assumed; (2) the process and measurement noises are one-step autocorrelated and two-step cross-correlated. Using an innovation approach and these correlation assumptions, a recursive algorithm with a simple computational procedure is derived for the optimal linear filter. As a significant application of the proposed results, the optimal recursive filtering problem in multi-sensor systems with missing measurements and random delays can be addressed.     Recent advances on filtering and control for nonlinear stochastic complex systems with incomplete information: A survey

The incomplete information under consideration mainly includes missing measurements, randomly varying sensor delays, signal quantization, sensor saturations, and signal sampling. With such incomplete information, the developments on various filtering and control issues are reviewed in great detail. In particular, the addressed nonlinear stochastic complex systems are so comprehensive that they include conventional nonlinear stochastic systems, different kinds of complex networks, and a large class of sensor networks. The corresponding filtering and control technologies for such nonlinear stochastic complex systems are then discussed. Subsequently, some latest results on the filtering and control problems for the complex systems with incomplete information are given.     Optimal Fusion Estimation with Multi-Step Random Delays and Losses in Transmission

    This paper is concerned with the optimal fusion estimation problem in networked stochastic systems with bounded random delays and packet dropouts, which unavoidably occur during the data transmission in the network. The measured outputs from each sensor are perturbed by random parameter matrices and white additive noises, which are cross-correlated between the different sensors. Least-squares fusion linear estimators including filter, predictor and fixed-point smoother, as well as the corresponding estimation error covariance matrices are designed via the innovation analysis approach. The proposed recursive algorithms depend on the delay probabilities at each sampling time, but do not to need to know if a particular measurement is delayed or not. Moreover, the knowledge of the signal evolution model is not required, as the algorithms need only the first and second order moments of the processes involved. Some of the practical situations covered by the proposed system model with random parameter matrices are analyzed and the influence of the delays in the estimation accuracy are examined in a numerical example.This research is supported by the “Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad” and “Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional” FEDER (Grant No. MTM2014-52291-P)

    A new estimation algorithm from measurements with multiple-step random delays and packet dropouts

    The least-squares linear estimation problem using covariance information is addressed in discrete-time linear stochastic systems with bounded random observation delays which can lead to bounded packet dropouts. A recursive algorithm, including the computation of predictor, filter, and fixed-point smoother, is obtained by an innovation approach. The random delays are modeled by introducing some Bernoulli random variables with known distributions in the system description. The derivation of the proposed estimation algorithm does not require full knowledge of the state-space model generating the signal to be estimated, but only the delay probabilities and the covariance functions of the processes involved in the observation equation.This research is supported by Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia (Grant no.
