    Comparing objective visual quality impairment detection in 2D and 3D video sequences

    The skill level of teleoperator plays a key role in the telerobotic operation. However, plenty of experiments are required to evaluate the skill level in a conventional assessment. In this paper, a novel brain-based method of skill assessment is introduced, and the relationship between the teleoperator's brain states and skill level is first investigated based on a kernel canonical correlation analysis (KCCA) method. The skill of teleoperator (SoT) is defined by a statistic method using the cumulative probability function (CDF). Five indicators are extracted from the electroencephalo-graph (EEG) of the teleoperator to represent the brain states during the telerobotic operation. By using the KCCA algorithm in modeling the relationship between the SoT and the brain states, the correlation has been proved. During the telerobotic operation, the skill level of teleoperator can be well predicted through the brain states. © 2013 IEEE.Link_to_subscribed_fulltex

    Subjective quality assessment of error concealment strategies for 3DTV in the presence of asymmetric transmission errors

    International audienceThe transmission of 3DTV sequences over packet based networks may result in degradations of the video quality due to packet loss. In the conventional 2D case, several different strategies are known for extrapolating the missing information and thus concealing the error. In 3D however, the residual error after concealment of one view might leads to binocular rivalry with the correctly received second view. In this paper, three simple alternatives are presented: frame freezing, a reduced playback speed, and displaying only a single view for both eyes, thus effectively switching to 2D presentation. In a subjective experiment the performance in terms of quality of experience of the three methods is evaluated for different packet loss scenarios. Error-free encoded videos at different bit rates have been included as anchor conditions. The subjective experiment method contains special precautions for measuring the Quality of Experience (QoE) for 3D content and also contains an indicator for visual discomfort. The results indicate that switching to 2D is currently the best choice but difficulties with visual discomfort should be expected even for this method

    Packet loss visibility across SD, HD, 3D, and UHD video streams

    The trend towards video streaming with increased spatial resolutions and dimensions, SD, HD, 3D, and 4kUHD, even for portable devices has important implications for displayed video quality. There is an interplay between packetization, packet loss visibility, choice of codec, and viewing conditions, which implies that prior studies at lower resolutions may not be as relevant. This paper presents two sets of experiments, the one at a Variable BitRate (VBR) and the other at a Constant BitRate (CBR), which highlight different aspects of the interpretation. The latter experiments also compare and contrast encoding with either an H.264 or an High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) codec, with all results recorded as objective Mean Opinion Score (MOS). The video quality assessments will be of interest to those considering: the bitrates and expected quality in error-prone environments; or, in fact, whether to use a reliable transport protocol to prevent all errors, at a cost in jitter and latency, rather than tolerate low levels of packet errors

    Subjective Evaluation of Transmission Errors in IPTV and 3DTV

    The increase of multimedia services delivered over packet-based networks has entailed greater quality expectations of the end-users. This has led to an intensive research on techniques for evaluating the quality of experience perceived by the viewers of audiovisual content, considering the different degradations that it could suffer along the broadcasting system. In this paper, a comprehensive study of the impact of transmission errors affecting video and audio in IPTV is presented. With this aim, subjective assessment tests were carried out proposing a novel methodology trying to keep as close as possible home environment viewing conditions. Also 3DTV content in side-by-side format has been used in the experiments to compare the impact of the degradations. The results provide a better understanding of the effects of transmission errors, and show that the QoE related to the first approach of 3DTV is acceptable, but the visual discomfort that it causes should be reduced

    Validation of a novel approach to subjective quality evaluation of conventional and 3D broadcasted video services

    Transmission errors are the main cause of degradation of the quality of real broadcasted video services. Therefore, knowing their impact on the quality of experience of the end users is a crucial issue. For instance, it would help to improve the performance of the distribution systems, and to develop monitoring tools to automatically estimate the quality perceived by the end users. In this paper we validate a subjective evaluation approach specifically designed to obtain meaningful results of the effects of degradations caused by transmission errors. This methodology has been already used in our previous works with monoscopic and stereoscopic videos. The validation is done by comparing the subjective ratings obtained for typical transmission errors with the proposed methodology and with the standard method Absolute Category Rating. The results show that the proposed approach could provide more representative evaluations of the quality of experience perceived by end users of conventional and 3D broadcasted video services
