Towards a flexible service integration through separation of business rules
Driven by dynamic market demands, enterprises are continuously exploring collaborations with others to add value to their services and seize new market opportunities. Achieving enterprise collaboration is facilitated by Enterprise Application Integration and Business-to-Business approaches that employ architectural paradigms like Service Oriented Architecture and incorporate technological advancements in networking and computing. However, flexibility remains a major challenge related to enterprise collaboration. How can changes in demands and opportunities be reflected in collaboration solutions with minimum time and effort and with maximum reuse of existing applications? This paper proposes an approach towards a more flexible integration of enterprise applications in the context of service mediation. We achieve this by combining goal-based, model-driven and serviceoriented approaches. In particular, we pay special attention to the separation of business rules from the business process of the integration solution. Specifying the requirements as goal models, we separate those parts which are more likely to evolve over time in terms of business rules. These business rules are then made executable by exposing them as Web services and incorporating them into the design of the business process.\ud
Thus, should the business rules change, the business process remains unaffected. Finally, this paper also provides an evaluation of the flexibility of our solution in relation to the current work in business process flexibility research
Early aspects: aspect-oriented requirements engineering and architecture design
This paper reports on the third Early Aspects: Aspect-Oriented Requirements Engineering and Architecture Design Workshop, which has been held in Lancaster, UK, on March 21, 2004. The workshop included a presentation session and working sessions in which the particular topics on early aspects were discussed. The primary goal of the workshop was to focus on challenges to defining methodical software development processes for aspects from early on in the software life cycle and explore the potential of proposed methods and techniques to scale up to industrial applications
Linguistic Constraints in LFG-DOP
LFG-DOP (Bod and Kaplan, 1998, 2003) provides an appealing answer to the question of how probabilistic methods can be incorporated into linguistic theory. However, despite its attractions, the standard model of LFG-DOP suffers from serious problems of overgeneration, because (a) it is unable to define fragments of the right level of generality, and (b) it has no way of capturing the effect of anything except simple positive constraints. We show how the model can be extended to overcome these problems. The question of how probabilistic methods should be incorporated into linguistic theory is important from both a practical, grammar engineering, perspective, and from the perspective of âpure â linguistic theory. An Analysis of Aspect Composition Problems
The composition of multiple software units does not always yield the desired results. In particular, aspect-oriented composition mechanisms introduce new kinds of composition problems. These are caused by different characteristics as compared to object-oriented composition, such as inverse dependencies. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of aspect-oriented composition problems, and eventually composition problems in a more general context. To this extent we propose and illustrate a systematic approach to analyze composition problems in a precise and concrete manner. In this approach we represent aspect-based composition mechanisms as transformation rules on program graphs. We explicitly model and show where composition problems occur, in a way that can easily be fully automated. In this paper we focus on structural superimposition (cf. intertype declarations) to illustrate our approach; this results in the identification of three categories of causes of composition problems. \u
Content-driven design and architecture of E-learning applications
E-learning applications combine content with learning technology systems to support the creation of content and its delivery to the learner. In the future, we can expect the distinction between learning content and its supporting infrastructure to become blurred. Content objects will interact with infrastructure services as independent objects. Our solution to the development of e-learning applications â content-driven design and architecture â is based on content-centric ontological modelling and development of architectures. We address the lingual localisation by providing service-level language translation techniques to adopt services to dierent languages and regulatory localisation by providing standards-based mappings to achieve regulatory compliance with regionally varying laws, standards and regulations. The aim is to support and enforce the explicit modelling of
aspects particularly relevant to localisation and runtime support consisting of tools and middleware services to automating the deployment based on models of locales, driven by the two localisation dimensions.
We focus here on an ontology-based conceptual information model that integrates locale specication in a coherent way
A Type System for First-Class Layers with Inheritance, Subtyping, and Swapping
Context-Oriented Programming (COP) is a programming paradigm to encourage
modularization of context-dependent software. Key features of COP are
layers---modules to describe context-dependent behavioral variations of a
software system---and their dynamic activation, which can modify the behavior
of multiple objects that have already been instantiated. Typechecking programs
written in a COP language is difficult because the activation of a layer can
even change objects' interfaces. Inoue et al. have informally discussed how to
make JCop, an extension of Java for COP by Appeltauer et al., type-safe.
In this article, we formalize a small COP language called ContextFJ
with its operational semantics and type system and show its type soundness. The
language models main features of the type-safe version of JCop, including
dynamically activated first-class layers, inheritance of layer definitions,
layer subtyping, and layer swapping
Semantic-based policy engineering for autonomic systems
This paper presents some important directions in the use of ontology-based semantics in achieving the vision of Autonomic Communications. We examine the requirements of Autonomic Communication with a focus on the demanding needs of ubiquitous computing environments, with an emphasis on the requirements shared with Autonomic Computing. We observe that ontologies provide a strong mechanism for addressing the heterogeneity in user task requirements, managed resources, services and context. We then present two complimentary approaches that exploit ontology-based knowledge in support of autonomic communications: service-oriented models for policy engineering and dynamic semantic queries using content-based networks. The paper concludes with a discussion of the major research challenges such approaches raise
