The dark tetrad, social dominance orientation, and online political discussion

    Get PDF
Previous literature into online trolling behavior has focused upon the role of the Dark Tetrad and political measures separately. This study extended the existing body of research by examining the relationship between the Dark Tetrad personality traits, social dominance orientation (SDO) and online political trolling in the United States of America. The data was collected using an online questionnaire from American users of Facebook and Reddit in the summer of 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Black Lives Matter movement, and in the runup to a hotly contested national election. Positive correlations were found between all of the Dark Tetrad traits, SDO, with each other and trolling behavior. Regression analysis found positive correlations between Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and SDO with trolling behavior. These traits accounted for 55.9% of the variance in trolling behavior

Nowadays, humans today are inseparable from the sophistication of information and communication technology, all people can enjoy the sophistication of today's technology, be it children, adolescents, adults, and even parents who cannot be separated from technology. In Indonesia, the age range is from 15 years to 24 years and is the largest user. The sampling technique used in this study was purposive sampling. The research subjects were 386 respondents and were active social media users. The measuring instrument used in this study uses an adaptation scale of dark triad personality by Jones and Pauhlus (2014) which consists of 26 items that the authors translate and adapt to the Indonesian culture. The purpose of this study was to describe the dark triad of personality among social media users. A dark personality is a personality that is dominated by negative behavior. The results showed 15.80% had high traits of Machiavellianism, 14.76% had high traits of narcissism, and 15.02% had high traits of psychopathy. Based on the results of the analysis of the mean value of personality factors based on the dark triad personality theory, it can be concluded that in general, the highest mean value is on the trait of Machiavellianism with a mean value of 21.09 and the lowest score lies in the characteristics of psychopathy, namely 11.20. Most social media users are Instagram with a percentage of 95.5% then Instant Massaging (Wa / Line) at 83.8% and Facebook at 53%.  The dark personality or dark triad personality is a personality that is dominated by negative behavior so that in the Islamic perspective it is included in the personality of anger, which means that the individual tends to the character of the body and teaches the principle of enjoyment

How HEXACO personality traits predict different selfie-posting behaviors among adolescents and young adults

Selfies are usually defined as self-portrait photos shared on social networks. Recent studies investigated how personality traits, and specifically narcissism, can be associated to different kinds of selfies. The HEXACO model, a new theory on personality structure, investigates personality on six dimensions, among which there is the Honesty/Humility trait, found strongly and negatively associated to narcissism. Thus, this study aims to investigate how different kinds of selfies could be predicted by HEXACO personality traits, controlling for age, gender and sexual orientation. Participants were 750 adolescents and young adults (59.1% girls, N = 443) from 13 to 30 years (Mage = 20.96; SDage = 4.23) who completed an online survey composed by the Kinsey scale, three questions about the frequency of different kinds of selfies (i.e. own selfies, group selfies and selfies with partner) and 60-item Hexaco Personality Inventory-Revised. Results showed that females, adolescents and not- exclusively heterosexuals posted more own selfies, and that adolescents posted also more group selfies and selfies with partner. Moreover lower Honesty/Humility, lower Conscientiousness, higher Emotionality and higher Extraversion significantly predict both own selfies and group selfies. Finally, only lower Honesty/Humility and higher Emotionality predict selfies with partner. Results suggested a common pattern of personality traits that can explain selfies behaviors according to literature on HEXACO model. Specifically, these findings enlightened that Honesty/Humility and Emotionality traits seem to be relevant in understanding selfies. People who post more selfies are lower in Honesty/Humility, showing a strong sense of self-importance and feeling superior. Moreover, they show higher Emotionality that is related to looking for social reinforcement on social networks. Only for own and group selfies, people high in Extraversion probably feel self-confident in groups, also in the online dimension, and low extraverted people probably posted less frequently because they feel uncomfortable being at the center of attention. Finally, people with high Conscientiousness spend less time online because they consider social networks as a distraction from their tasks. Thus, HEXACO model allows to better understand which personality traits can predict different kinds of selfies. Limitations and implications for future research are discussed

The dark side of social media: Associations between the Dark Triad of personality, self-disclosure online and selfie-related behaviours

The present study investigated the relations between the Dark Triad personality traits (i.e., Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy), distinct dimensions of selfdisclosure online (i.e., honesty, amount, positive valence, and intent) and selÞ e relatedbehaviours (taking, posting, and editing selÞ es). The results indicated, that all three Dark Triad components were positively correlated with posting and editing selÞ es on social networking sites (SNSs). However, multiple regression analysis demonstrated that only narcissism predicted selÞ e-related behaviours. Narcissism and Machiavellianism were positively related to the amount of personal information disclosed online and the tendency to intentionally self-disclose in a computer-mediated communication (CMC). Moreover, we found no signiÞ cant correlations between the perceived controllability of Internet communication and two types of self-promotion in the Internet (self-disclosure online and selÞ e-related behaviours). Our Þ ndings demonstrate the importance of analysing the ‘dark’ personality traits in the context of self-promotional behaviours in social media

This study examines the phenomenon of selfie posting on social media and its relationship to narcissism, the Dark Triad, impulsivity, attachment style, rejection sensitivity, and reflective functioning. The sample was made up of 499 participants who completed an online survey consisting of personality measures and open- and closed-ended questions about selfie posting behavior. Data were analyzed using a negative binomial regression model. Results: The study found that individuals with high levels of the Dark Triad trait of psychopathy post more selfies on social media than do individuals with low levels of the trait. The Dark Triad trait of narcissism was also found to be significantly related to selfie posting, with narcissistic men posting significantly more selfies than narcissistic women. Furthermore, the study found that individuals with high levels of motor and non-planning impulsivity posted significantly more selfies than individuals with lower levels of those traits. This study also found a (marginally non-significant) trend whereby vulnerable narcissism and anxious attachment were predictive of increased selfie posting. Participants with higher levels of reflective functioning were found to post fewer selfies on social media, as were individuals high in rejection sensitivity. Grandiose narcissism, subclinical narcissism, avoidant attachment, and attentional impulsivity were not found to be significantly related to increased selfie posting on social media. Open-ended questions revealed some interesting anecdotal material about possible motivations for posting selfies on social media. In sum, the study’s findings shed light on a number of traits that are predictive of selfie posting on social media. Clinical implications, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed

A Psychosocial Behavioral Attribution Model: Examining the Relationship Between the “Dark Triad” and Cyber-Criminal Behaviors Impacting Social Networking Sites

This study proposes that individual personality characteristics and behavioral triggering effects come together to motivate online victimization. It draws from psychology’s current understanding of personality traits, attribution theory, and criminological research. This study combines the current computer deviancy and hacker taxonomies with that of the Dark Triad model of personality mapping. Each computer deviant behavior is identified by its distinct dimensions of cyber-criminal behavior (e.g., unethical hacking, cyberbullying, cyberstalking, and identity theft) and analyzed against the Dark Triad personality factors (i.e., narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy). The goal of this study is to explore whether there are significant relationships among the Dark Triad personality traits and specific cyber-criminal behaviors within social network sites (SNSs). The study targets offensive security engineers and computer deviants from specific hacker conferences and from websites that discuss or promote computer deviant behavior (e.g., hacking). Additional sampling is taken from a general population of SNS users. Using a snowball sampling method, 235 subjects completed an anonymous, self-report survey that includes items measuring computer deviance, personality traits, and demographics. Results yield that there was no significant relationship between Dark Triad and cyber-criminal behaviors defined in the perceived hypotheses. The final chapter of the study summarizes the results and discusses the mechanisms potentially underlying the findings. In the context of achieving the latter objective, exploratory analyses are incorporated and partly relied upon. It also includes a discussion concerning the implications of the findings in terms of providing theoretical insights on the Dark Triad traits and cyber-criminal behaviors more generally

Latent human traits in the language of social media: An open-vocabulary approach

Over the past century, personality theory and research has successfully identified core sets of characteristics that consistently describe and explain fundamental differences in the way people think, feel and behave. Such characteristics were derived through theory, dictionary analyses, and survey research using explicit self-reports. The availability of social media data spanning millions of users now makes it possible to automatically derive characteristics from behavioral data-language use-at large scale. Taking advantage of linguistic information available through Facebook, we study the process of inferring a new set of potential human traits based on unprompted language use. We subject these new traits to a comprehensive set of evaluations and compare them with a popular five factor model of personality. We find that our language-based trait construct is often more generalizable in that it often predicts non-questionnaire-based outcomes better than questionnaire-based traits (e.g. entities someone likes, income and intelligence quotient), while the factors remain nearly as stable as traditional factors. Our approach suggests a value in new constructs of personality derived from everyday human language use

Identifying the Drivers Behind the Dissemination of Online Misinformation: A Study on Political Attitudes and Individual Characteristics in the Context of Engaging With Misinformation on Social Media

The increasing dissemination of online misinformation in recent years has raised the question which individuals interact with this kind of information and what role attitudinal congruence plays in this context. To answer these questions, we conduct surveys in six countries (BE, CH, DE, FR, UK, and US) and investigate the drivers of the dissemination of misinformation on three noncountry specific topics (immigration, climate change, and COVID-19). Our results show that besides issue attitudes and issue salience, political orientation, personality traits, and heavy social media use increase the willingness to disseminate misinformation online. We conclude that future research should not only consider individual’s beliefs but also focus on specific user groups that are particularly susceptible to misinformation and possibly caught in social media “fringe bubbles.

Everyday sadism as a dark personality trait

Treball Final de MĂ ster Universitari en InvestigaciĂł en Cervell i Conducta (Pla de 2021). SBT024. Curs: 2021/2022In recent decades there has been a growing interest in the "dark" aspects of personality. Initially three particularly socially harmful aspects were proposed, subclinical psychopathy, subclinical narcissism and Machiavellianism, the so-called "dark triad" (Paulhus and Williams, 2002). More recently, a possible fourth dark aspect, everyday sadism, has been included, forming the so-called "dark tetrad" (Buckels, et al., 2013). Such aspect has been related to aversive behaviors such as obtaining pleasure through suffering and/or dominance before others. This study aims to examine whether sadism differs structurally from the rest of the traits of the Dark tetrad, its pattern of associations with normal personality, and the ability to predict certain behaviors harmful to society, beyond the traits that make up the Dark triad. For this purpose, a survey was administered through a link to the google forms platform, in which participants voluntarily completed different questionnaires of the Dark tetrad SD4 (Ortet-Walker et al., 2022) and different scales that assess harmful behaviors such as antisocial behavior, animal abuse, bullying and cyberbullying. The exploratory factor analysis showed a four-factor structure, with most sadism items saturating in a single factor differentiated from Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy factors. Likewise, the daily sadism scale showed a moderate-high relationship with low agreeableness, and a low-medium relationship with low responsibility. Finally, multiple regression analyses showed that the most relevant variables in the prediction of these dissocial behaviors such as animal abuse and antisocial behavior were male sex, psychopathy and sadism. In reference to bullying and cyberbullying, the variables age (conversely) and machiavellianism were also found to be significant predictors. In short, our results suggest that everyday sadism explains a significant part of the variability of behaviors such as bullying and cyberbullying, antisocial behavior and animal abuse, beyond the other dark traits, suggesting that this new dark trait is relevant to explain behaviors that are harmful to society and, therefore, would justify the relevance of the so-called "Dark Tetrad"
