The power of GIS language
I have been working now for 50 years â since
the foundation of Environmental Systems
Research Institute (Esri), in 1969 â on building
software tools that help different kinds of users
do their work better.
Some of this is daily management, some of it
is work flows but the power of GIS is the central
power, the heart of GIS is really remarkable. Itâs
almost magical to me. So, Iâm sort of
rediscovering myself and emphasising to all of
GIS users all over the world to make better
maps. Maps are about telling a story. Many of
the maps that users make are maps that donât tell
a story. There are lines and dots and a text and
graphic display but they are not leveraging the
power of this communication language. So I
think of maps as a kind of language and we have
photographs and paintings â these are graphic
expressions of reality but a map is much more
powerful and we need to treat it as the power
that it has
Spatial Dispersion of Peering Clusters in the European Internet
We study the role played by geographical distance in the peering decisions between Internet Service Providers. Firstly, we assess whether or not the Internet industry shows clustering in peering; we then concentrate on the dynamics of the agglomeration process by studying the effects of bilateral distance in changing the morphology of existing peering patterns. Our results show a dominance of random spatial patterns in peering agreements. The sign of the effect of distance on the peering decision, driving the agglomeration/dispersion process, depends, however, on the initial level of clustering. We show that clustered patterns will disperse in the long run

A conceptual framework for studying collective reactions to events in location-based social media
Events are a core concept of spatial information, but location-based social media (LBSM) provide information on reactions to events. Individuals have varied degrees of agency in initiating, reacting to or modifying the course of events, and reactions include observations of occurrence, expressions containing sentiment or emotions, or a call to action. Key characteristics of reactions include referent events and information about who reacted, when, where and how. Collective reactions are composed of multiple individual reactions sharing common referents. They can be characterized according to the following dimensions: spatial, temporal, social, thematic and interlinkage. We present a conceptual framework, which allows characterization and comparison of collective reactions. For a thematically well-defined class of event such as storms, we can explore differences and similarities in collective attribution of meaning across space and time. Other events may have very complex spatio-temporal signatures (e.g. political processes such as Brexit or elections), which can be decomposed into series of individual events (e.g. a temporal window around the result of a vote). The purpose of our framework is to explore ways in which collective reactions to events in LBSM can be described and underpin the development of methods for analysing and understanding collective reactions to events
Grid infrastructures supporting paediatric endocrinology across Europe
Paediatric endocrinology is a highly specialised area of clinical medicine with many experts with specific knowledge distributed over a wide geographical area. The European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE) is an example of such a body of experts that require regular collaboration and sharing of data and knowledge. This paper describes work, developed as a corollary to the VOTES project [1] and implementing similar architectures, to provide a data grid that allows information to be efficiently distributed between collaborating partners, and also allows wide-scale analyses to be run over the entire data-set, which necessarily involves crossing domain boundaries and negotiating data access between administrations that only trust each other to a limited degree
Organizational knowledge transfer through creation, mobilization and diffusion: A case analysis of InTouch within Schlumberger
There is a paucity of theory for the effective management of knowledge transfer within large organisations. Practitioners continue to rely upon âexperimentalâ approaches to address the problem. This research attempts to reduce the gap between theory and application, thereby improving conceptual clarity for the transfer of knowledge.
The paper, through an in-depth case analysis conducted within Schlumberger, studies the adoption of an intranet-based knowledge management (KM) system (called InTouch) to support, strategically align and transfer knowledge resources.
The investigation was undertaken through the adoption of a robust methodological approach (abductive strategy) incorporating the role of technology as an enabler of knowledge management application. Consequently, the study addressed the important question of translating theoretical benefits of KM into practical reality.
The research formulates a set of theoretical propositions which are seen as key to the development of an effective knowledge based infrastructure. The findings identify 30 generic attributes that are essential to the creation, mobilisation and diffusion of organisational knowledge.
The research makes a significant contribution to identifying a theoretical and empirically based agenda for successful intranet-based KM which will be of benefit to both the academic and practitioner communities. The paper also highlights and proposes important areas for further research
