    Understanding receptivity to interruptions in mobile human-computer interaction

    Interruptions have a profound impact on our attentional orientation in everyday life. Recent advances in mobile information technology increase the number of potentially disruptive notifications on mobile devices by an increasing availability of services. Understanding the contextual intricacies that make us receptive to these interruptions is paramount to devising technology that supports interruption management. This thesis makes a number of contributions to the methodology of studying mobile experiences in situ, understanding receptivity to interruptions, and designing context-sensitive systems. This thesis presents a series of real-world studies that investigate opportune moments for interruptions in mobile settings. In order to facilitate the study of the multi-faceted ways opportune moments surface from participants' involvement in the world this thesis develops: - a model of the contextual factors that interact to guide receptivity to interruptions, and - an adaptation of the Experience-Sampling Method (ESM) to capture behavioural response to interruptions in situ. In two naturalistic experiments, participants' experiences of being interrupted on a mobile phone are sampled as they go about their everyday lives. In a field study, participants' experiences are observed and recorded as they use a notification-driven mobile application to create photo-stories in a theme park. Experiment 1 explores the effects of content and time of delivery of the interruption. The results show that receptivity to text messages is significantly affected by message content, while scheduling one's own interruption times in advance does not improve receptivity over randomly timed interruptions. Experiment 2 investigates the hypothesis that opportune moments to deliver notifications are located at the endings of episodes of mobile interaction such as texting and calling. This notification strategy is supported by significant effects in behavioural measures of receptivity, while self-reports and interviews reveal complexities in the subjective experience of the interruption. By employing a mixed methods approach of interviews, observations and an analysis of system logs in the field study, it is shown that participants appreciated location-based notifications as prompts to foreground the application during relative 'downtimes' from other activities. However, an unexpected quantity of redundant notifications meant that visitors soon habituated to and eventually ignored them, which suggests careful, sparing use of notifications in interactive experiences. Overall, the studies showed that contextual mediation of the timing of interruptions (e.g. by phone activity in Experiment 2 and opportune places in the field study) is more likely to lead to interruptions at opportune moments than when participants schedule their own interruptions. However, momentary receptivity and responsiveness to an interruption is determined by the complex and situated interactions of local and relational contextual factors. These contextual factors are captured in a model of receptivity that underlies the interruption process. The studies highlight implications for the design of systems that seek to manage interruptions by adapting the timing of interruptions to the user's situation. In particular, applications to manage interruptions in personal communication and pervasive experiences are considered

    Why are smartphones disruptive? An empirical study of smartphone use in real-life contexts

    Notifications are one of the core functionalities of smartphones. Previous research suggests they can be a major disruption to the professional and private lives of users. This paper presents evidence from a mixed-methods study using first-person wearable video cameras, comprising 200 h of audio-visual first-person, and self-confrontation interview footage with 1130 unique smartphone interactions (N = 37 users), to situate and analyse the disruptiveness of notifications in real-world contexts. We show how smartphone interactions are driven by a complex set of routines and habits users develop over time. We furthermore observe that while the duration of interactions varies, the intervals between interactions remain largely invariant across different activity and location contexts, and for being alone or in the company of others. Importantly, we find that 89% of smartphone interactions are initiated by users, not by notifications. Overall this suggests that the disruptiveness of smartphones is rooted within learned user behaviours, not devices

    Smartphones as steady companions: device use in everyday life and the economics of attention

    This thesis investigates smartphone use in naturally occurring contexts with a dataset comprising 200 hours of audio-visual first-person recordings from wearable cameras, and self-confrontation interview video footage (N = 41 users). The situated context in which smartphone use takes place has often been overlooked because of the technical difficulty of capturing context of use, actual action of users, and their subjective experience simultaneously. This research project contributes to filling this gap, with a detailed, mixed-methods analysis of over a thousand individual phone engagement behaviours (EB). We observe that (a) the smartphone is a key structuring element in the flow of daily activities. Participants report complex strategies on how they manage engaging with or avoiding their devices. (b) Unexpectedly, we find that the majority of EB (89%) are initiated by users, not devices; users engage with the phone roughly every five minutes regardless of the context they are in. (c) A large portion of EB seems to stem from contextual cues and an unconscious urge to pick up the device, even when there is no clear reason to do so. d) Participants are surprised about, and often unhappy with how frequently they mindlessly reach for the phone. Our in-depth analysis unveils several overlapping layers of motivations and triggers driving EB. Monitoring incoming notifications, managing time use, responding to social pressures, actually completing a task with the phone, design factors, unconscious urges, as well as the accessibility of the device, and most importantly its affordance for distraction all contribute to picking up the phone. This user drive for EB is used by providers to feed the attention economy. So far, keeping the smartphone outside of the visual field and immediate reach has appeared as the only efficient strategy to prevent overuse

    Adaptive mHealth Interventions for Improving Youth Responsiveness and Clinical Outcomes

    abstract: Mobile health (mHealth) applications (apps) hold tremendous potential for addressing chronic health conditions. Smartphones are now the most popular form of computing, and the ubiquitous “always with us, always on” nature of mobile technology makes them amenable to interventions aimed and managing chronic disease. Several challenges exist, however, such as the difficulty in determining mHealth effects due to the rapidly changing nature of the technology and the challenges presented to existing methods of evaluation, and the ability to ensure end users consistently use the technology in order to achieve the desired effects. The latter challenge is in adherence, defined as the extent to which a patient conducts the activities defined in a clinical protocol (i.e. an intervention plan). Further, higher levels of adherence should lead to greater effects of the intervention (the greater fidelity to the protocol, the more benefit one should receive from the protocol). mHealth has limitations in these areas; the ability to have patients sustainably adhere to a protocol, and the ability to drive intervention effect sizes. My research considers personalized interventions, a new approach of study in the mHealth community, as a potential remedy to these limitations. Specifically, in the context of a pediatric preventative anxiety protocol, I introduce algorithms to drive greater levels of adherence and greater effect sizes by incorporating per-patient (personalized) information. These algorithms have been implemented within an existing mHealth app for middle school that has been successfully deployed in a school in the Phoenix Arizona metropolitan area. The number of users is small (n=3) so a case-by-case analysis of app usage is presented. In addition simulated user behaviors based on models of adherence and effects sizes over time are presented as a means to demonstrate the potential impact of personalized deployments on a larger scale.Dissertation/ThesisMasters Thesis Software Engineering 201

    Skole and Sabbath as a Way of Being in Classical Educators: A Hermeneutic Phenomenology on Leisure

    The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to describe the essence of the lived experiences of 10 classical Christian secondary teachers and administrators who embrace Greek skolĂ© and Christian Sabbath at classical Christian schools in the United States. Leisure theory guided this study, particularly Sabbath as described by Heschel and Brueggeman, Christian leisure as understood by Pieper and Heintzman, and Samaras’ description of skolĂ© in Greek philosophy, as they point to a specific type of leisure and way of being understood by classical Christian educators. van Manen’s hermeneutic phenomenological approach was used for data collection and analysis of open-ended response logs, individual interviews, and focus groups. Participants were recruited using snowballing and criterion sampling in United States classical Christian schools who participate in skolĂ© or Sabbath at least four times per week. The study was developed with the following central research question in mind: What are the lived experiences of secondary classical Christian educators who develop skolĂ© and Sabbath practices outside of the classroom? The research sub-questions also sought to uncover how classical Christian educators develop the cross-section of skolĂ© and Sabbath disciplines to enhance meaningful contribution to their work in the classroom. Four essential themes identified through data analysis were intentional boundaries, activity or practice as a medium for contemplation, the human element, and the posture of receptivity leading to thematic interpretations: leisure approach mirrored learning philosophy and skolĂ© and Sabbath practices led to holistic mindfulness for participants, quality relationships, and measurable order and discipline qualities that were transferable to teaching.     Communicating in a Multi-Role, Multi- Device, Multi-Channel World: How Knowledge Workers Manage Work- Home Boundaries

    Technology keeps us connected through multiple devices, on several communication channels, and with our many daily roles. Being able to better manage one’s availability and thus have more control over work-home boundaries can potentially reduce interferences and ultimately stress. However, little is known about the practical implications of communication technologies and their role in boundary and availability management. Taking a bottom-up approach, we conducted four exploratory qualitative studies to understand how current communication technologies support and challenge work-home boundaries for knowledge workers. First, we compared email practices across accounts and devices, finding differences based on professional and personal preferences. Secondly, with wearables such as smartwatches becoming more popular, findings from our autoethnography and interview study show how device ecologies can be used to moderate notifications and one’s sense of availability. Thirdly, moving beyond just email to include multiple communication channels, our diary study and focus group showed how awareness and availability are managed and interpreted differently between senders and receivers. Together, these studies portray how current communication technologies challenge boundary management and how users rely on strategies – that we define as microboundaries – to mitigate boundary cross-overs, boundary interruptions, and expectations of availability. Finally, to understand the extent to which microboundaries can be useful boundary management strategies, we took a multiple-case study approach to evaluate how they are used over time and found that, although context-dependent, microboundaries help increase participants’ boundary control and reduce stress. This thesis’ primary contribution is a taxonomy of microboundary strategies that deepens our current understanding of boundary management in the digital age. By feeling in control, users experience fewer unwanted boundary cross-overs and ultimately feel less stressed. This work leads to our secondary contribution to individual and organisational practice.
