    Get PDF
In this modern era, people can do meetings by doing video conferencing. By doing video conferencing we can reach our colleagues who are geographically far from us in real time, as if we are close to them through video and audio visual. it's just that sometimes the capacity of video conferencing tools becomes an obstacle in doing conference simultaneously for multiple locations. Video conferencing between three or more locations is possible through the Multipoint Control Unit (MCU) system. This research was conducted at one of the educational institutions which had several branches spread in various locations and each location had a video conference tool. MCU system that was used previously is the sx20 telepresence which can only accommodate 3 video conference locations simultaneously. from this problem this educational institution developed a new MCU system using Acano. By using this Acano system can support HD quality video so that video and audio can be clearly displayed.

Abstract: Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and Web service are the de facto standards for Voice over IP applications and distributed system, respectively. Although they do not be used to define multimedia conferencing directly and completely, many proposals, drafts and papers suggest extensions and solutions to this essential service. However, as the spring up of the Web service standards and technology, some traditional communication systems should be restructured and modified, including the multimedia conference framework based on SIP and Web service. In this study, a hybrid multimedia conference framework is first propose, which consist of low latency services, primitive and composite conference services. Under this framework, a multimedia conference can be organized and controlled conveniently with the property of loosely coupling and extensibility. Then the primary components of a conference control are introduced followed by the detailed design exemplified by some typical scenarios, which is compared to other possible design approaches. Finally, a specification of orchestration implementation which realizes the synthesis of the conference control functions is introduced to illustrate the feasibility of this design

A Semantic-Based Middleware for Multimedia Collaborative Applications

    Get PDF
The Internet growth and the performance increase of desktop computers have enabled large-scale distributed multimedia applications. They are expected to grow in demand and services and their traffic volume will dominate. Real-time delivery, scalability, heterogeneity are some requirements of these applications that have motivated a revision of the traditional Internet services, the operating systems structures, and the software systems for supporting application development. This work proposes a Java-based lightweight middleware for the development of large-scale multimedia applications. The middleware offers four services for multimedia applications. First, it provides two scalable lightweight protocols for floor control. One follows a centralized model that easily integrates with centralized resources such as a shared too], and the other is a distributed protocol targeted to distributed resources such as audio. Scalability is achieved by periodically multicasting a heartbeat that conveys state information used by clients to request the resource via temporary TCP connections. Second, it supports intra- and inter-stream synchronization algorithms and policies. We introduce the concept of virtual observer, which perceives the session as being in the same room with a sender. We avoid the need for globally synchronized clocks by introducing the concept of user\u27s multimedia presence, which defines a new manner for combining streams coming from multiple sites. It includes a novel algorithm for estimation and removal of clock skew. In addition, it supports event-driven asynchronous message reception, quality of service measures, and traffic rate control. Finally, the middleware provides support for data sharing via a resilient and scalable protocol for transmission of images that can dynamically change in content and size. The effectiveness of the middleware components is shown with the implementation of Odust, a prototypical sharing tool application built on top of the middleware

The VESPA Project: Virtual Reality Interventions for Neurocognitive and Developmental Disorders

    Get PDF
VESPA is a financed project supported by the Sicilian Regional Research and Development funds, and it is structured by the development, research and validation of Virtual Reality (VR) based application for the diagnosis and treatment of neurocognitive conditions. In particular, this article presents its characteristics, referred to as the first (2013-2015) and second (2021-ongoing) generations of VESPA, with particular reference to literature regarding the VR technology application and development, the VR treatment of neurocognitive conditions and prior versions of this intervention. Through a comprehensive review of the research conducted over the last 5 years, evidence has emerged supporting VESPA’s aim and scopes, highlighting how the application of VR can be considered to add value to typical rehabilitation/therapeutic paths. VESPA project generations are then presented in detail, including specific session/task battery characteristics, 2.5D, 3D and 5D typologies, system usability and architecture and pathological domain-based dynamics and features. The discussion about VESPA will highlight the current advantages along with limitations and future directions

Multimedia data capture with multicast dissemination for online distance learning

Distance Learning Environments (DLEs) are elusive to define, difficult to successfully implement and costly due to their proprietary nature. With few open-source solutions, organizations are forced to invest large amounts of their resources in the procurement and support of proprietary products. Once an organization has chosen a particular solution, it becomes prohibitively expensive to choose another path later in the development process. The resolution to these challenges is realized in the use of open-standards, non-proprietary solutions. This thesis explores the multiple definitions of DLEs, defines metrics of successful implementation and develops open-source solutions for the delivery of multimedia in the Distance Learning Environment. Through the use of the Java Media Framework API, multiple tools are created to increase the transmission, capture and availability of multimedia content. Development of this technology, through the use of case studies, leaves a legacy of lectures and knowledge on the Internet to entertain and enlighten future generations.http://archive.org/details/multimedidatcapt109456185US Navy (USN) autho
