    Effectiveness of Web-Based Tutorials: Performance on Statistical Concepts

    This study was designed to examine the effectiveness of Web Based Tutorials (WBTs) and the correlation between students’ self-efficacy score for self-regulated learning and their learning performance using WBTs. Participants were graduate students (N = 14) enrolled in a statistics course during a single semester. The results of this study showed that WBTs were effective for learning statistics concepts. However, there was no correlation between students’ self efficacy score for self regulated learning and their learning performance using WBTs. Additional investigation showed that the classroom instruction mode was more effective than the WBT

    Designing A Supportive Blended Learning Experience: The Relationship Between Student Performance and Social, Teacher, and Cognitive Presence

    This study sought to deconstruct the educational experience in a blended classroom (with both online and face-to-face instruction) in order to test for specific associations between elements of that experience and achievement (final course grade). The Community of Inquiry (CoI) (Garrison, 2011) framework considers a students educational experience as a combination of social, cognitive, and teacher interactions. Working with a large data set (n = 1,926) collected over three years (2011-2014) in 13 undergraduate, blended classrooms at a prominent Canadian university, this study examined how student perceptions of these interactions (with peers, course content, and instructors) related to grades. Using data modelling techniques, results showed a significant, and direct (path coefficient of 0.16, p<0.001) relationship between presence and grade, with results on the presence interrelationship [teacher social (0.23, p < 0.001), and social cognitive (0.45, p < 0.001)] highlighting the role of teacher presence in promoting achievement. Student adoption attitudes also presented as a key consideration in the presence-achievement relationship (0.41, p <0.001), as well as blend format (F=29.98, p < 0.001), where the more integrated, clear, communicative, and consistent a course was about expectations and assessments, the more presence students felt and in turn, the higher those formats performed

    A meta-analysis of the effectiveness of intelligent tutoring systems on college students' academic learning

    © 2013 American Psychological Association.This meta-analysis synthesizes research on the effectiveness of intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) for college students. Thirty-five reports were found containing 39 studies assessing the effectiveness of 22 types of ITS in higher education settings. Most frequently studied were AutoTutor, Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces, eXtended Tutor-Expert System, and Web Interface for Statistics Education. Major findings include (a) Overall, ITS had a moderate positive effect on college students' academic learning (g = .32 to g = .37); (b) ITS were less effective than human tutoring, but they outperformed all other instruction methods and learning activities, including traditional classroom instruction, reading printed text or computerized materials, computer-assisted instruction, laboratory or homework assignments, and no-treatment control; (c) ITS's effectiveness did not significantly differ by different ITS, subject domain, or the manner or degree of their involvement in instruction and learning; and (d) effectiveness in earlier studies appeared to be significantly greater than that in more recent studies. In addition, there is some evidence suggesting the importance of teachers and pedagogy in ITS-assisted learning

    Use of multi-modal media and tools in an online information literacy course: College students\u27 attitudes and perceptions

    This project studies the use of multi-modal media objects in an online information literacy class. One hundred sixty-two undergraduate students answered seven surveys. Significant relationships are found among computer skills, teaching materials, communication tools and learning experience.     An analysis and needs assessment was conducted to identify kindergarten through grade 14 (K-14) customer needs with regard to using the World Wide Web (WWW) for instruction and to identify obstacles K-14 teachers face in utilizing NASA Learning Technologies products in the classroom. The needs assessment was conducted as part of the Dryden Learning Technologies Project which is a collaboration between Dryden Flight Research Center (DFRC), Edwards, California and Tne Pennsylvania State University (PSU), University Park, Pennsylvania.
