    Theories of Bernstein and Shulman: their relevance to teacher training courses in England using adult numeracy courses as an example

    Since 2002, adult numeracy specifications have been introduced for the first time in England. This article investigates the relevance of Bernstein and Shulman’s theoretical frameworks to teacher training using the new level four adult numeracy teacher training programmes as an example. The article discusses Bernstein’s theories relating to pedagogic methods of acquisition and transmission. It investigates the recontextualization process in which subject-content and teaching standards may be translated into teaching approaches, which can be used by trainee teachers. It also investigates Shulman’s model of pedagogical reasoning and action in relation to teacher training. The article bases its evidence on a research project, which evaluates teacher-training courses in adult numeracy and literacy, and English for speakers of other languages in England. The article suggests that the two educationists’ theories have significant relevance to the design and implementation of teacher training courses. It also suggests that they can be used alongside each other with each educationist’s theories having their particular strengths. Bernstein’s theories emphasises a rigorous approach to course structuring; Shulman’s theories offer an insightful approach to how a trainee transforms subject and teaching standards knowledge and skills into possible teaching methods to help her learners understand the subject

    Processing and Linking Audio Events in Large Multimedia Archives: The EU inEvent Project

    In the inEvent EU project [1], we aim at structuring, retrieving, and sharing large archives of networked, and dynamically changing, multimedia recordings, mainly consisting of meetings, videoconferences, and lectures. More specifically, we are developing an integrated system that performs audiovisual processing of multimedia recordings, and labels them in terms of interconnected “hyper-events ” (a notion inspired from hyper-texts). Each hyper-event is composed of simpler facets, including audio-video recordings and metadata, which are then easier to search, retrieve and share. In the present paper, we mainly cover the audio processing aspects of the system, including speech recognition, speaker diarization and linking (across recordings), the use of these features for hyper-event indexing and recommendation, and the search portal. We present initial results for feature extraction from lecture recordings using the TED talks.     Global adaptation in networks of selfish components: emergent associative memory at the system scale

    In some circumstances complex adaptive systems composed of numerous self-interested agents can self-organise into structures that enhance global adaptation, efficiency or function. However, the general conditions for such an outcome are poorly understood and present a fundamental open question for domains as varied as ecology, sociology, economics, organismic biology and technological infrastructure design. In contrast, sufficient conditions for artificial neural networks to form structures that perform collective computational processes such as associative memory/recall, classification, generalisation and optimisation, are well-understood. Such global functions within a single agent or organism are not wholly surprising since the mechanisms (e.g. Hebbian learning) that create these neural organisations may be selected for this purpose, but agents in a multi-agent system have no obvious reason to adhere to such a structuring protocol or produce such global behaviours when acting from individual self-interest. However, Hebbian learning is actually a very simple and fully-distributed habituation or positive feedback principle. Here we show that when self-interested agents can modify how they are affected by other agents (e.g. when they can influence which other agents they interact with) then, in adapting these inter-agent relationships to maximise their own utility, they will necessarily alter them in a manner homologous with Hebbian learning. Multi-agent systems with adaptable relationships will thereby exhibit the same system-level behaviours as neural networks under Hebbian learning. For example, improved global efficiency in multi-agent systems can be explained by the inherent ability of associative memory to generalise by idealising stored patterns and/or creating new combinations of sub-patterns. Thus distributed multi-agent systems can spontaneously exhibit adaptive global behaviours in the same sense, and by the same mechanism, as the organisational principles familiar in connectionist models of organismic learning

    Adaptive threshold optimisation for colour-based lip segmentation in automatic lip-reading systems

Johannesburg, September 2016Having survived the ordeal of a laryngectomy, the patient must come to terms with the resulting loss of speech. With recent advances in portable computing power, automatic lip-reading (ALR) may become a viable approach to voice restoration. This thesis addresses the image processing aspect of ALR, and focuses three contributions to colour-based lip segmentation. The rst contribution concerns the colour transform to enhance the contrast between the lips and skin. This thesis presents the most comprehensive study to date by measuring the overlap between lip and skin histograms for 33 di erent colour transforms. The hue component of HSV obtains the lowest overlap of 6:15%, and results show that selecting the correct transform can increase the segmentation accuracy by up to three times. The second contribution is the development of a new lip segmentation algorithm that utilises the best colour transforms from the comparative study. The algorithm is tested on 895 images and achieves percentage overlap (OL) of 92:23% and segmentation error (SE) of 7:39 %. The third contribution focuses on the impact of the histogram threshold on the segmentation accuracy, and introduces a novel technique called Adaptive Threshold Optimisation (ATO) to select a better threshold value. The rst stage of ATO incorporates -SVR to train the lip shape model. ATO then uses feedback of shape information to validate and optimise the threshold. After applying ATO, the SE decreases from 7:65% to 6:50%, corresponding to an absolute improvement of 1:15 pp or relative improvement of 15:1%. While this thesis concerns lip segmentation in particular, ATO is a threshold selection technique that can be used in various segmentation applications.MT201

    Genetic programming applied to morphological image processing

    This thesis presents three approaches to the automatic design of algorithms for the processing of binary images based on the Genetic Programming (GP) paradigm. In the first approach the algorithms are designed using the basic Mathematical Morphology (MM) operators, i.e. erosion and dilation, with a variety of Structuring Elements (SEs). GP is used to design algorithms to convert a binary image into another containing just a particular characteristic of interest. In the study we have tested two similarity fitness functions, training sets with different numbers of elements and different sizes of the training images over three different objectives. The results of the first approach showed some success in the evolution of MM algorithms but also identifed problems with the amount of computational resources the method required. The second approach uses Sub-Machine-Code GP (SMCGP) and bitwise operators as an attempt to speed-up the evolution of the algorithms and to make them both feasible and effective. The SMCGP approach was successful in the speeding up of the computation but it was not successful in improving the quality of the obtained algorithms. The third approach presents the combination of logical and morphological operators in an attempt to improve the quality of the automatically designed algorithms. The results obtained provide empirical evidence showing that the evolution of high quality MM algorithms using GP is possible and that this technique has a broad potential that should be explored further.
