    Structured Light Stereoscopic Imaging with Dynamic Pseudo-random Patterns

    Abstract. Structured light stereoscopic imaging offers an efficient and afford-able solution to 3D modeling of objects. The majority of structured light pat-terns that have been proposed either provide a limited resolution or are sensitive to the inherent texture on the surface of the object. This paper proposes an in-novative imaging strategy that accomplishes 3D reconstruction of objects using a combination of spatial-neighboring and time-multiplexing structured light pat-terns encoded with uniquely defined pseudo-random color codes. The approach is extended with the concept of dynamic patterns that adaptively increases the reconstruction resolution. Original techniques are introduced to recover and validate pseudo-random codes from stereoscopic images, and to consistently map color and texture over the reconstructed surface map. Experimental results demonstrate the potential of the solution to create reconstructions with various densities of points and prove the robustness of the approach on objects with dif-ferent surface properties

    Light field image processing: an overview

    Light field imaging has emerged as a technology allowing to capture richer visual information from our world. As opposed to traditional photography, which captures a 2D projection of the light in the scene integrating the angular domain, light fields collect radiance from rays in all directions, demultiplexing the angular information lost in conventional photography. On the one hand, this higher dimensional representation of visual data offers powerful capabilities for scene understanding, and substantially improves the performance of traditional computer vision problems such as depth sensing, post-capture refocusing, segmentation, video stabilization, material classification, etc. On the other hand, the high-dimensionality of light fields also brings up new challenges in terms of data capture, data compression, content editing, and display. Taking these two elements together, research in light field image processing has become increasingly popular in the computer vision, computer graphics, and signal processing communities. In this paper, we present a comprehensive overview and discussion of research in this field over the past 20 years. We focus on all aspects of light field image processing, including basic light field representation and theory, acquisition, super-resolution, depth estimation, compression, editing, processing algorithms for light field display, and computer vision applications of light field data

    The concept underlying the Engineering Data Compendium was the product of a research and development program (Integrated Perceptual Information for Designers project) aimed at facilitating the application of basic research findings in human performance to the design and military crew systems. The principal objective was to develop a workable strategy for: (1) identifying and distilling information of potential value to system design from the existing research literature, and (2) presenting this technical information in a way that would aid its accessibility, interpretability, and applicability by systems designers. The present four volumes of the Engineering Data Compendium represent the first implementation of this strategy. This is the first volume, the User's Guide, containing a description of the program and instructions for its use

    Single-pixel imaging 12 years on: a review

    Modern cameras typically use an array of millions of detector pixels to capture images. By contrast, single-pixel cameras use a sequence of mask patterns to filter the scene along with the corresponding measurements of the transmitted intensity which is recorded using a single-pixel detector. This review considers the development of single-pixel cameras from the seminal work of Duarte et al. up to the present state of the art. We cover the variety of hardware configurations, design of mask patterns and the associated reconstruction algorithms, many of which relate to the field of compressed sensing and, more recently, machine learning. Overall, single-pixel cameras lend themselves to imaging at non-visible wavelengths and with precise timing or depth resolution. We discuss the suitability of single-pixel cameras for different application areas, including infrared imaging and 3D situation awareness for autonomous vehicles

    Advanced Stereoscopy towards On-Machine Surface Metrology and Inspection

    With the goal of inventing an integral on-machine integral 3D machine vision inspection system, which monitors the parts quality and extract required patterns or structures during the manufacturing process using low-cost hardware and in a high-speed mode, this dissertation discussed the newly developed strobe-stereoscopy (SS) technique for in- motion targets examination. Stereoscopy is utilized for 3D reconstruction from recorded image pairs based on the triangulation of the display pixels, test target, and cameras. Stroboscopy is introduced to lock the moving target at different locations by frequency matching between the light source and the controlled motor. Fluorescent fluid was introduced and implemented to the SS system for high-gloss reflective surface inspection. Stereoscopy technique is limited on the diffused surface because of the sensitivity to illumination dispersion, fluorescent strobe-stereoscopy (FSS) technique overcomes the limitation to polished surface inspection and is applied to step- by-step fabrication process monitoring thus complete the metrology-in-loop for the automated production. The surface filtering-based image selection and extraction approach (ISE) is created for quick pattern extraction from the freeform base structure, which was integrated into the built hardware configuration. In this dissertation, the performance of inspection systems has been analyzed and validated with comprehensive experiment results. Potential and future work of the proposed technique was included as well

    Novel haptic interface For viewing 3D images

    In recent years there has been an explosion of devices and systems capable of displaying stereoscopic 3D images. While these systems provide an improved experience over traditional bidimensional displays they often fall short on user immersion. Usually these systems only improve depth perception by relying on the stereopsis phenomenon. We propose a system that improves the user experience and immersion by having a position dependent rendering of the scene and the ability to touch the scene. This system uses depth maps to represent the geometry of the scene. Depth maps can be easily obtained on the rendering process or can be derived from the binocular-stereo images by calculating their horizontal disparity. This geometry is then used as an input to be rendered in a 3D display, do the haptic rendering calculations and have a position depending render of the scene. The author presents two main contributions. First, since the haptic devices have a finite work space and limited resolution, we used what we call detail mapping algorithms. These algorithms compress geometry information contained in a depth map, by reducing the contrast among pixels, in such a way that it can be rendered into a limited resolution display medium without losing any detail. Second, the unique combination of a depth camera as a motion capturing system, a 3D display and haptic device to enhance user experience. While developing this system we put special attention on the cost and availability of the hardware. We decided to use only off-the-shelf, mass consumer oriented hardware so our experiments can be easily implemented and replicated. As an additional benefit the total cost of the hardware did not exceed the one thousand dollars mark making it affordable for many individuals and institutions

    Computerised stereoscopic measurement of the human retina

    The research described herein is an investigation into the problems of obtaining useful clinical measurements from stereo photographs of the human retina through automation of the stereometric procedure by digital stereo matching and image analysis techniques. Clinical research has indicated a correlation between physical changes to the optic disc topography (the region on the retina where the optic nerve enters the eye) and the advance of eye disease such as hypertension and glaucoma. Stereoscopic photography of the human retina (or fundus, as it is called) and the subsequent measurement of the topography of the optic disc is of great potential clinical value as an aid in observing the pathogenesis of such disease, and to this end, accurate measurements of the various parameters that characterise the changing shape of the optic disc topography must be provided. Following a survey of current clinical methods for stereoscopic measurement of the optic disc, fundus image data acquisition, stereo geometry, limitations of resolution and accuracy, and other relevant physical constraints related to fundus imaging are investigated. A survey of digital stereo matching algorithms is presented and their strengths and weaknesses are explored, specifically as they relate to the suitability of the algorithm for the fundus image data. The selection of an appropriate stereo matching algorithm is discussed, and its application to four test data sets is presented in detail. A mathematical model of two-dimensional image formation is developed together with its corresponding auto-correlation function. In the presense of additive noise, the model is used as a tool for exploring key problems with respect to the stereo matching of fundus images. Specifically, measures for predicting correlation matching error are developed and applied. Such measures are shown to be of use in applications where the results of image correlation cannot be independently verified, and meaningful quantitative error measures are required. The application of these theoretical tools to the fundus image data indicate a systematic way to measure, assess and control cross-correlation error. Conclusions drawn from this research point the way forward for stereo analysis of the optic disc and highlight a number of areas which will require further research. The development of a fully automated system for diagnostic evaluation of the optic disc topography is discussed in the light of the results obtained during this research
