    Kinematics, Structural Mechanics, and Design of Origami Structures with Smooth Folds

    Origami provides novel approaches to the fabrication, assembly, and functionality of engineering structures in various fields such as aerospace, robotics, etc. With the increase in complexity of the geometry and materials for origami structures that provide engineering utility, computational models and design methods for such structures have become essential. Currently available models and design methods for origami structures are generally limited to the idealization of the folds as creases of zeroth-order geometric continuity. Such an idealization is not proper for origami structures having non-negligible thickness or maximum curvature at the folds restricted by material limitations. Thus, for general structures, creased folds of merely zeroth-order geometric continuity are not appropriate representations of structural response and a new approach is needed. The first contribution of this dissertation is a model for the kinematics of origami structures having realistic folds of non-zero surface area and exhibiting higher-order geometric continuity, here termed smooth folds. The geometry of the smooth folds and the constraints on their associated kinematic variables are presented. A numerical implementation of the model allowing for kinematic simulation of structures having arbitrary fold patterns is also described. Examples illustrating the capability of the model to capture realistic structural folding response are provided. Subsequently, a method for solving the origami design problem of determining the geometry of a single planar sheet and its pattern of smooth folds that morphs into a given three-dimensional goal shape, discretized as a polygonal mesh, is presented. The design parameterization of the planar sheet and the constraints that allow for a valid pattern of smooth folds and approximation of the goal shape in a known folded configuration are presented. Various testing examples considering goal shapes of diverse geometries are provided. Afterwards, a model for the structural mechanics of origami continuum bodies with smooth folds is presented. Such a model entails the integration of the presented kinematic model and existing plate theories in order to obtain a structural representation for folds having non-zero thickness and comprised of arbitrary materials. The model is validated against finite element analysis. The last contribution addresses the design and analysis of active material-based self-folding structures that morph via simultaneous folding towards a given three-dimensional goal shape starting from a planar configuration. Implementation examples including shape memory alloy (SMA)-based self-folding structures are provided

    Dynamics and Control of Nonholonomic Systems with Internal Degrees of Freedom

    Nonholonomic systems model many robots as well as animals and other systems. Although such systems have been studied extensively over the last century, much work still remains to be done on their dynamics and control. Many techniques have been developed for controlling kinematic nonholonomic systems or simplified dynamic versions, however control of high dimensional, underactuated nonholonomic systems remains to be addressed. This dissertation helps fill this gap by developing a control algorithm that can be applied to systems with three or more configuration variables and just one input. We also analyze the dynamic effects of passive degrees of freedom and elastic potentials which are commonly observed in such systems showing that the addition of a passive degree of freedom can even be used to improve the locomotion characteristics of a system. Such elastic potentials can be present due to compliant mechanisms or origami, both of which can exhibit bistability and many other properties that can be useful in the design of robots

    Uncovering the Nonlinear Dynamics of Origami Folding

    Origami, the ancient art of paper folding, has found lots of different applications in various branches of science, including engineering. However, most of the studies on engineering applications of origami have been limited to static or quasistatic applications. Origami folding, on the other hand, could be a dynamic process. The intricate nonlinear elastic properties of origami structures can lead to interesting dynamic characteristics and applications. Nevertheless, studying the dynamics of folding is still a nascent field. In this dissertation, we try to expand our knowledge of fundamentals of origami folding dynamics. We look at the problem of origami folding dynamics from two different perspectives: 1) How can we utilize folding-induced mechanical properties for dynamic applications? and 2) How can we fold origami structures using dynamic excitations? In order to answer these questions, we conduct three different projects. Regarding the first perspective, we study a unique asymmetric quasi-zero stiffness (QZS) property from the pressurized fluidic origami cellular structure, and examine the feasibility and efficiency of using this nonlinear property for low-frequency vibration isolation. In another project, we analyze the feasibility of utilizing origami folding techniques to create an optimized jumping mechanism. And finally, regarding the second perspective, we examine a rapid and reversible origami folding method by exploiting a combination of resonance excitation, asymmetric multi-stability, and active control. In addition to these studies, Witnessing the rich and nonlinear dynamic characteristics of origami structures, in this dissertation we introduce the idea of using origami structures as physical reservoir computing systems and investigate their potentials in sensing and signal processing tasks without relying on external digital components and signal processing units

    Application of Design Synthesis Technology in Architectural Practice

    The use of computational tools and techniques has opened up new possibilities in architectural form generation. In parallel there have also been developments in structural engineering analysis and design methods, with the primary focuses being on accurate modelling of material behaviour and structural stability, and on ensuring economy. Having accepted that form and structure are mutually concomitant, something that is particularly important when considering freeform architecture, there are two distinct design approaches: (i) shapedriven architectural forms and adoption of creative integrated postrationalisation for a predefined freeform, and (ii) form-structure integration from conception, manifested by a growing number of methods for use at various stages in the design process. In this regard, a truss layout optimisation technique is proposed as a versatile design tool. This has a potential role in both these approaches to form generation at the conceptual design stage. A series of design studies are employed for this purpose, and generated forms are discussed. Additionally, further form generation possibilities are explored, using an extended version of the aforementioned technique. As a representative example, ‘tensegrity’ forms are studied in greater detail. The generated forms are extensively tested using a commercial structural analysis package, in order to verify the correctness of the conclusions drawn
