Mestrado em Engenharia de Computadores e TelemáticaThe use of multiple computing devices per person is increasing more and more. Nowadays is normal that mobile devices like smartphones, tablets and laptops are present in the everyday life of a single person and in many cases people use these devices to perform important operations related with their professional life. This also presents a problem, as these devices come with the user in everyday life and the fact that often they have a high monetary value means that these devices are susceptible to theft. This thesis introduces a computer locking system that distinguishes itself from existing similar systems because (i) it is designed to work independently of the Operating System(s) installed on the laptop or mobile device, (ii) depends on a firrmware driver that implements the lock operation making it resistant to storage device formats or any other attack that uses software operations. It is also explored the operation of a device that has a firrmware that follows the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) specification as well as the development of drivers for this type of firrmware. It was also developed a security protocol and various cryptographic techniques where explored and implemented.O uso de vários dispositivos computacionais por pessoa está a aumentar cada vez mais.

Urban supply networks are facing increasing demands and challenges and thus constitute a relevant field for research and practical development. Supply chain management holds enormous potential and relevance for society and everyday life as the flow of goods and information are important economic functions. Being a heterogeneous field, the literature base of supply chain management research is difficult to manage and navigate. Disruptive digital technologies and the implementation of cross-network information analysis and sharing drive the need for new organisational and technological approaches. Practical issues are manifold and include mega trends such as digital transformation, urbanisation, and environmental awareness. A promising approach to solving these problems is the realisation of smart and collaborative supply networks. The growth of artificial intelligence applications in recent years has led to a wide range of applications in a variety of domains. However, the potential of artificial intelligence utilisation in supply chain management has not yet been fully exploited. Similarly, value creation increasingly takes place in networked value creation cycles that have become continuously more collaborative, complex, and dynamic as interactions in business processes involving information technologies have become more intense. Following a design science research approach this cumulative thesis comprises the development and discussion of four artefacts for the analysis and advancement of smart and collaborative urban supply networks. This thesis aims to highlight the potential of artificial intelligence-based supply networks, to advance data-driven inter-organisational collaboration, and to improve last mile supply network sustainability. Based on thorough machine learning and systematic literature reviews, reference and system dynamics modelling, simulation, and qualitative empirical research, the artefacts provide a valuable contribution to research and practice

Sekiz özgün eser çalışmasının her aşaması anlatılmıştır.

Coloniality and the Courtroom: Understanding Pre-trial Judicial Decision Making in Brazil

This thesis focuses on judicial decision making during custody hearings in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The impetus for the study is that while national and international protocols mandate the use of pre-trial detention only as a last resort, judges continue to detain people pre-trial in large numbers. Custody hearings were introduced in 2015, but the initiative has not produced the reduction in pre-trial detention that was hoped. This study aims to understand what informs judicial decision making at this stage. The research is approached through a decolonial lens to foreground legacies of colonialism, overlooked in mainstream criminological scholarship. This is an interview-based study, where key court actors (judges, prosecutors, and public defenders) and subject matter specialists were asked about influences on judicial decision making. Interview data is complemented by non-participatory observation of custody hearings. The research responds directly to Aliverti et al.'s (2021) call to ‘decolonize the criminal question’ by exposing and explaining how colonialism informs criminal justice practices. Answering the call in relation to judicial decision making, findings provide evidence that colonial-era assumptions, dynamics, and hierarchies were evident in the practice of custody hearings and continue to inform judges’ decisions, thus demonstrating the coloniality of justice. This study is significant for the new empirical data presented and theoretical innovation is also offered via the introduction of the ‘anticitizen’. The concept builds on Souza’s (2007) ‘subcitizen’ to account for the active pursuit of dangerous Others by judges casting themselves as crime fighters in a modern moral crusade. The findings point to the limited utility of human rights discourse – the normative approach to influencing judicial decision making around pre-trial detention – as a plurality of conceptualisations compete for dominance. This study has important implications for all actors aiming to reduce pre-trial detention in Brazil because unless underpinning colonial logics are addressed, every innovation risks becoming the next lei para inglês ver (law [just] for the English to see)

Throughout the history of interactive film, creators have experimented with different modes of interaction to allow for the viewers’ agency. As interactive films have not yet established a standardised form, projects have continually been shaped by new technology. Over time, viewers have shifted from the cinema, to televisions, the personal computer and recently the mobile device. These devices further extend the interactive capabilities that are at the creators’ disposal. Therefore, this thesis proposes that mobile devices could facilitate new forms of interactive film that make use of these features. This study investigates the integration of the mobile devices’ characteristics, features and affordances into an interactive film project that is both viewed and interacted with on a mobile device. First and foremost, it establishes whether the mobile device can be successfully used by authors to relay interactive films. Secondly, it gives insights into design considerations for authors that aim to make use of the mobile devices’ features. Additionally, the thesis gathers insights into the use of game-engine technology for developing similar interactive film projects. The research begins with a literature review establishing the historical and academic context in regards to interactive- films, narratives, and interfaces, thereby focussing on mobile devices. Consecutively, a selection of projects is surveyed to garner insights into the current state of the art. These sections are then used to inform the practice-based part of this thesis in which the production of an interactive film project will be comprehensively documented. A concurrent think-aloud usability test, accompanied by a reflection on the outcomes and production process will conclude the research. The outcome suggests that mobile devices can act as successful vessels for interactive narratives. However, usability tests as well as reflection reveal that the thesis project cannot be strictly classified as an interactive film. Therefore, suggestions for future research as well as insights into the retention of filmic quality can be made in retrospect. Additionally, The use of game-engines for interactive film authoring proves to allow creators rapid prototyping and ease of implementation. Though their use might impact projects by over-complicating interaction paradigms more extensively used in game production.Media files notes: Project Documentation of Creations; an interactive short film for the mobile device. When it comes to questions concerning the nature of Reality, Philosophers and Theologians have the answers. Philosophers have the answers that can’t be proven right. Theologians have the answers that can’t be proven wrong. Today’s designers of Massively-Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games create realities for a living. They can’t spend centuries mulling over the issues: they have to face them head-on. Their practical experiences can indicate which theoretical proposals actually work in practice. That’s today’s designers. Tomorrow’s will have a whole new set of questions to answer. The designers of virtual worlds are the literal gods of those realities. Suppose Artificial Intelligence comes through and allows us to create non-player characters as smart as us. What are our responsibilities as gods? How should we, as gods, conduct ourselves? How should we be gods

Expanding the scope of single-molecule energy transfer with gold nanoparticles and graphene

Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) is a common tool to measure the distances between a donor and an acceptor fluorophore and is employed as a spectroscopic ruler. This non-radiative energy transfer is utilized to not only measure distances but also to observe dynamics in the field of biophysics and medicine. However, main limitations of FRET are the limited time resolution and working range between donor and acceptor molecules of 10 nm. To increase the application of FRET, this limitation can be circumvented by the introduction of different ma-terials in the close proximity. For characterization of the altered distance dependence, a precise distance control between the dyes and the applied material is required, which here is provided by the DNA origami technique. In DNA origami, DNA self-assembles into programmable, complex, and robust structures, which can be easily modified with dyes and other entities with nanometric control. DNA origami nanoantennas constructed of a pair of gold nanoparticles have recently been introduced to substantially increase the obtainable fluorescence signal that yields a higher time resolution in biophysical single-molecule FRET experiments. In this context, it is crucial to understand the influence of the gold nanoparticles on the FRET process itself. In this work, gold nanoparticles are placed next to FRET pairs using the DNA origami technique (see publication I). A measurement procedure to accurately determine energy transfer efficiencies is estab-lished and reveals that in the intermediate coupling regime, the energy transfer efficiency drops in the presence of nanoparticles whereas the energy transfer rate constant from the donor to the acceptor is not significantly altered. Next, graphene is introduced to increase the range of energy transfer. Graphene is a 2D carbon lattice, which can also be employed as an unbleachable broadband acceptor without labeling. To understand the principles of the energy transfer between a fluorophore and the graphene surface, the distance dependence of the energy transfer from a fluorophore to graphene is investigated (see publication II). As such experiments require high quality graphene surfac-es, a cleaning and transferring procedure to generate reproducible graphene-on-glass-coverslips is established (see publication III) and characterized by different spectroscopic methods. Finally, the full potential of graphene-on-glass coverslips as microscopy platforms are highlighted by adopting graphene in the fields of biosensing, biophysics and super-resolution microscopy (see publication IV). The designed biosensors are capable to detect a DNA target, a viscosity change, or the binding of a biomolecule. In addition, FRET between two dyes is expanded by additional graphene energy transfer (GET) that reveals the relative orientation of the FRET pairs to the graphene surface. Finally, GET is used in super-resolution experiments to reach isotopic nanometric 3D-resolution and track a single fluorophore that undergoes 6-nm jumps. The developed techniques and assays have the potential to become the basis for numerous new applications in single-molecule sensing, biophysics, and super-resolution microscopy
