Nuclei & Glands Instance Segmentation in Histology Images: A Narrative Review
Instance segmentation of nuclei and glands in the histology images is an
important step in computational pathology workflow for cancer diagnosis,
treatment planning and survival analysis. With the advent of modern hardware,
the recent availability of large-scale quality public datasets and the
community organized grand challenges have seen a surge in automated methods
focusing on domain specific challenges, which is pivotal for technology
advancements and clinical translation. In this survey, 126 papers illustrating
the AI based methods for nuclei and glands instance segmentation published in
the last five years (2017-2022) are deeply analyzed, the limitations of current
approaches and the open challenges are discussed. Moreover, the potential
future research direction is presented and the contribution of state-of-the-art
methods is summarized. Further, a generalized summary of publicly available
datasets and a detailed insights on the grand challenges illustrating the top
performing methods specific to each challenge is also provided. Besides, we
intended to give the reader current state of existing research and pointers to
the future directions in developing methods that can be used in clinical
practice enabling improved diagnosis, grading, prognosis, and treatment
planning of cancer. To the best of our knowledge, no previous work has reviewed
the instance segmentation in histology images focusing towards this direction.Comment: 60 pages, 14 figure
Computational Methods for the Analysis of Genomic Data and Biological Processes
In recent decades, new technologies have made remarkable progress in helping to understand biological systems. Rapid advances in genomic profiling techniques such as microarrays or high-performance sequencing have brought new opportunities and challenges in the fields of computational biology and bioinformatics. Such genetic sequencing techniques allow large amounts of data to be produced, whose analysis and cross-integration could provide a complete view of organisms. As a result, it is necessary to develop new techniques and algorithms that carry out an analysis of these data with reliability and efficiency. This Special Issue collected the latest advances in the field of computational methods for the analysis of gene expression data, and, in particular, the modeling of biological processes. Deep Learning in Medical Image Analysis
The accelerating power of deep learning in diagnosing diseases will empower physicians and speed up decision making in clinical environments. Applications of modern medical instruments and digitalization of medical care have generated enormous amounts of medical images in recent years. In this big data arena, new deep learning methods and computational models for efficient data processing, analysis, and modeling of the generated data are crucially important for clinical applications and understanding the underlying biological process. Case series of breast fillers and how things may go wrong: radiology point of view
INTRODUCTION: Breast augmentation is a procedure opted by women to overcome sagging
breast due to breastfeeding or aging as well as small breast size. Recent years have shown the
emergence of a variety of injectable materials on market as breast fillers. These injectable
breast fillers have swiftly gained popularity among women, considering the minimal
invasiveness of the procedure, nullifying the need for terrifying surgery. Little do they know
that the procedure may pose detrimental complications, while visualization of breast
parenchyma infiltrated by these fillers is also deemed substandard; posing diagnostic
challenges. We present a case series of three patients with prior history of hyaluronic acid and
collagen breast injections.
REPORT: The first patient is a 37-year-old lady who presented to casualty with worsening
shortness of breath, non-productive cough, central chest pain; associated with fever and chills
for 2-weeks duration. The second patient is a 34-year-old lady who complained of cough, fever
and haemoptysis; associated with shortness of breath for 1-week duration. CT in these cases
revealed non thrombotic wedge-shaped peripheral air-space densities.
The third patient is a 37‐year‐old female with right breast pain, swelling and redness for 2-
weeks duration. Previous collagen breast injection performed 1 year ago had impeded
sonographic visualization of the breast parenchyma. MRI breasts showed multiple non-
enhancing round and oval shaped lesions exhibiting fat intensity.
CONCLUSION: Radiologists should be familiar with the potential risks and hazards as well
as limitations of imaging posed by breast fillers such that MRI is required as problem-solving
tool
