Constitutions of Value
Gathering an interdisciplinary range of cutting-edge scholars, this book addresses legal constitutions of value.
Global value production and transnational value practices that rely on exploitation and extraction have left us with toxic commons and a damaged planet. Against this situation, the book examines law’s fundamental role in institutions of value production and valuation. Utilising pathbreaking theoretical approaches, it problematizes mainstream efforts to redeem institutions of value production by recoupling them with progressive values. Aiming beyond radical critique, the book opens up the possibility of imagining and enacting new and different value practices.
This wide-ranging and accessible book will appeal to international lawyers, socio-legal scholars, those working at the intersections of law and economy and others, in politics, economics, environmental studies and elsewhere, who are concerned with rethinking our current ideas of what has value, what does not, and whether and how value may be revalued

Viral Bodies: AIDS and Other Contagions in Latin American Life Narratives
The HIV/AIDS crisis in Latin America was overshadowed by the late phase of the Cold War, while authoritarian governments promoted discourses reflecting moral and ethical exceptionalism. People with AIDS (PWAs) experienced multiple crises—moral excision by the state, marginalization, and the certainty of death. Existing societal infrastructures of class, race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality urged their marginalized lives into even more precarious ways of being. The authoritarian and hegemonic discourses complicated and intensified how PWAs experienced isolation, internal exile, neglect, condemnation, discrimination, and death. These exceptional conditions led to a 10-year delay before works by Latin American artists and writers emerged. My dissertation examines works by Reinaldo Arenas (Cuba), Pedro Lemebel (Chile), and Pablo Perez (Argentina) since they reveal a spectrum of intersectional AIDS subjectivities exhibiting accommodation, resistance, and transgression of prevailing national and religious norms. Drawing from the fields of exile studies, transfeminism, contagion theory, and virality, my dissertation argues that these narratives break imposed silences by radically exteriorizing the insularity, anonymity, and decomposing bodies of those dying, and living, with the disease. They intervene in national, transnational, and religious discourses. They also challenge the limits of gender and genre, while contributing to a (re)imagining of homosexual history. They offer utopian visions of kinship, belonging, and community formation and bring practices of difference such as transvestism, sadomasochism, and spiritual fetishism into focus
Covid Conspiracy Theories in Global Perspective
Covid Conspiracy Theories in Global Perspective examines how conspiracy theories and related forms of misinformation and disinformation about the Covid-19 pandemic have circulated widely around the world.
Covid conspiracy theories have attracted considerable attention from researchers, journalists, and politicians, not least because conspiracy beliefs have the potential to negatively affect adherence to public health measures. While most of this focus has been on the United States and Western Europe, this collection provides a unique global perspective on the emergence and development of conspiracy theories through a series of case studies. The chapters have been commissioned by recognized experts on area studies and conspiracy theories.
The chapters present case studies on how Covid conspiracism has played out (some focused on a single country, others on regions), using a range of methods from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, including history, politics, sociology, anthropology, and psychology. Collectively, the authors reveal that, although there are many narratives that have spread virally, they have been adapted for different uses and take on different meanings in local contexts.
This volume makes an important contribution to the rapidly expanding field of academic conspiracy theory studies, as well as being of interest to those working in the media, regulatory agencies, and civil society organizations, who seek to better understand the problem of how and why conspiracy theories spread

Defying Convention: Devising new approaches to heritage values in Valletta, Malta.
This thesis is concerned with heritage values and significance in the context of the World Heritage listed city of Valletta, the capital of the Maltese Islands, and the author’s home. Though the city’s fortunes have ebbed and flowed over the years, it has recently experienced a period of accelerated regeneration. Now a popular destination for cultural tourists, Valletta is a city in transition, where renewal has led to the conservation and restoration of its urban fabric yet change wrought by these processes has had a demonstrable, detrimental effect on its lesser recognized heritage. An intentional focus on these ‘unofficial’ heritage values is the principal subject of this research, in order to produce an alternative reading of a heritage landscape most often associated with more traditional criteria.
This research is framed and informed by more contemporary approaches to heritage values, and the intellectual foundation for this approach is drawn from recent scholarship and related heritage conventions. Of particular note are the Burra Charter (Australia ICOMOS 2013 [1979]) and the Faro Convention (Council of Europe 2005) which reconceptualize the ideas of significance and emphasize public contribution in the process of defining what it is about a heritage place that is significant.
This thesis adopts an innovative, in-situ data collection method, where the participants lead the researcher on walks around the city. Interviews were conducted with 19 participants in three phases between 2021 and 2022. The interviews themselves are participant-defined and captured on video as well as audio. The resultant data are analysed, organized and presented thematically. This analysis demonstrates the pivotal role of social values in understanding significance from a grassroots perspective, an approach that has never previously been applied in the context of Valletta
Towards a circular economy: fabrication and characterization of biodegradable plates from sugarcane waste
Bagasse pulp is a promising material to produce biodegradable plates. Bagasse is the fibrous residue that remains after sugarcane stalks are crushed to extract their juice. It is a renewable resource and is widely available in many countries, making it an attractive alternative to traditional plastic plates. Recent research has shown that biodegradable plates made from Bagasse pulp have several advantages over traditional plastic plates. For example, they are more environmentally friendly because they are made from renewable resources and can be composted after use. Additionally, they are safer for human health because they do not contain harmful chemicals that can leach into food. The production process for Bagasse pulp plates is also relatively simple and cost-effective. Bagasse is first collected and then processed to remove impurities and extract the pulp. The pulp is then molded into the desired shape and dried to form a sturdy plate. Overall, biodegradable plates made from Bagasse pulp are a promising alternative to traditional plastic plates. They are environmentally friendly, safe for human health, and cost-effective to produce. As such, they have the potential to play an important role in reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable practices. Over the years, the world was not paying strict attention to the impact of rapid growth in plastic use. As a result, uncontrollable volumes of plastic garbage have been released into the environment. Half of all plastic garbage generated worldwide is made up of packaging materials. The purpose of this article is to offer an alternative by creating bioplastic goods that can be produced in various shapes and sizes across various sectors, including food packaging, single-use tableware, and crafts. Products made from bagasse help address the issue of plastic pollution. To find the optimum option for creating bagasse-based biodegradable dinnerware in Egypt and throughout the world, researchers tested various scenarios. The findings show that bagasse pulp may replace plastics in biodegradable packaging. As a result of this value-added utilization of natural fibers, less waste and less of it ends up in landfills. The practical significance of this study is to help advance low-carbon economic solutions and to produce secure bioplastic materials that can replace Styrofoam in tableware and food packaging production
