An Introduction to String Re-Writing Kernel

    Get PDF
Abstract Learning for sentence re-writing is a fundamental task in natural language processing and information retrieval. In this paper, we propose a new class of kernel functions, referred to as string rewriting kernel, to address the problem. A string re-writing kernel measures the similarity between two pairs of strings. It can capture the lexical and structural similarity between sentence pairs without the need of constructing syntactic trees. We further propose an instance of string re-writing kernel which can be computed efficiently. Experimental results on benchmark datasets show that our method can achieve comparable results with state-of-the-art methods on two sentence re-writing learning tasks: paraphrase identification and recognizing textual entailment

Deductive Verification of Unmodified Linux Kernel Library Functions

This paper presents results from the development and evaluation of a deductive verification benchmark consisting of 26 unmodified Linux kernel library functions implementing conventional memory and string operations. The formal contract of the functions was extracted from their source code and was represented in the form of preconditions and postconditions. The correctness of 23 functions was completely proved using AstraVer toolset, although success for 11 functions was achieved using 2 new specification language constructs. Another 2 functions were proved after a minor modification of their source code, while the final one cannot be completely proved using the existing memory model. The benchmark can be used for the testing and evaluation of deductive verification tools and as a starting point for verifying other parts of the Linux kernel.Comment: 18 pages, 2 tables, 6 listings. Generalized two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory is a matrix string theory

    Get PDF
We consider two-dimensional Yang-Mills theories on arbitrary Riemann surfaces. We introduce a generalized Yang-Mills action, which coincides with the ordinary one on flat surfaces but differs from it in its coupling to two-dimensional gravity. The quantization of this theory in the unitary gauge can be consistently performed taking into account all the topological sectors arising from the gauge-fixing procedure. The resulting theory is naturally interpreted as a Matrix String Theory, that is as a theory of covering maps from a two-dimensional world-sheet to the target Riemann surface.Comment: LaTeX, 10 pages, uses espcrc2.sty. One-loop Effective Action of the Holographic Antisymmetric Wilson Loop

We systematically study the spectrum of excitations and the one-loop determinant of holographic Wilson loop operators in antisymmetric representations of N=4\mathcal{N}=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Holographically, these operators are described by D5-branes carrying electric flux and wrapping an S4⊂S5S^4 \subset S^5 in the AdS5×S5AdS_5\times S^5 bulk background. We derive the dynamics of both bosonic and fermionic excitations for such D5-branes. A particularly important configuration in this class is the D5-brane with AdS2×S4AdS_2\times S^4 worldvolume and kk units of electric flux, which is dual to the circular Wilson loop in the totally antisymmetric representation of rank kk. For this Wilson loop, we obtain the spectrum, show explicitly that it is supersymmetric and calculate the one-loop effective action using heat kernel techniques.Comment: 42 pages, one tabl

Diffractive Higgs Production by AdS Pomeron Fusion

The double diffractive Higgs production at central rapidity is formulated in terms of the fusion of two AdS gravitons/Pomerons first introduced by Brower, Polchinski, Strassler and Tan in elastic scattering. Here we propose a simple self-consistent holographic framework capable of providing phenomenologically compelling estimates of diffractive cross sections at the LHC. As in the traditional weak coupling approach, we anticipate that several phenomenological parameters must be tested and calibrated through factorization for a self-consistent description of other diffractive process such as total cross sections, deep inelastic scattering and heavy quark production in the central region.Comment: 53 pages, 8 figure

The Heat Kernel Expansion on a Cone and Quantum Fields Near Cosmic Strings

An asymptotic expansion of the trace of the heat kernel on a cone where the heat coefficients have a delta function behavior at the apex is obtained. It is used to derive the renormalized effective action and total energy of a self-interacting quantum scalar field on the cosmic string space-time. Analogy is pointed out with quantum theory with boundaries. The surface infinities in the effective action are shown to appear and are removed by renormalization of the string tension. Besides, the total renormalized energy turns out to be finite due to cancelation of the known non-integrable divergence in the energy density of the field with a counterterm in the bare string tension.Comment: 20 pages, JINR preprint August, 1993, E2-93-291, LATEX fil
