    A Rule Based Segmentation Approaches to Extract Retinal Blood Vessels in Fundus Image

    The physiological structures of the retinal blood vessel are one of the key features that visible in the retinal images and contain the information associate with the anatomical abnormalities. It is accepted all over the world to judge the cardiovascular and retinal disease. To avoid the risk of visual impairment, appropriate vessel segmentation is mandatory. Here has proposed a segmentation algorithm that efficiently extracts the blood vessels from the retinal fundus image. The proposed segmentation algorithm is performed Lab and Principle Component (PC) based gray level conversion, Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE), morphological operations, Local Property-Based Pixel Correction (LPBPC). For appropriate detection proposed vessels correction algorithm LPBPC that check the feature of the vessels and remove the wrong vessel detection. To measure the appropriateness of the proposed algorithm, the experimental results are compared with the corresponding ground truth images. The experimental results have shown that the proposed blood vessel algorithm is more accurate than the existing algorithms

    Deep learning-based improvement for the outcomes of glaucoma clinical trials

    Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. It is a progressive optic neuropathy in which retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axon loss, probably as a consequence of damage at the optic disc, causes a loss of vision, predominantly affecting the mid-peripheral visual field (VF). Glaucoma results in a decrease in vision-related quality of life and, therefore, early detection and evaluation of disease progression rates is crucial in order to assess the risk of functional impairment and to establish sound treatment strategies. The aim of my research is to improve glaucoma diagnosis by enhancing state of the art analyses of glaucoma clinical trial outcomes using advanced analytical methods. This knowledge would also help better design and analyse clinical trials, providing evidence for re-evaluating existing medications, facilitating diagnosis and suggesting novel disease management. To facilitate my objective methodology, this thesis provides the following contributions: (i) I developed deep learning-based super-resolution (SR) techniques for optical coherence tomography (OCT) image enhancement and demonstrated that using super-resolved images improves the statistical power of clinical trials, (ii) I developed a deep learning algorithm for segmentation of retinal OCT images, showing that the methodology consistently produces more accurate segmentations than state-of-the-art networks, (iii) I developed a deep learning framework for refining the relationship between structural and functional measurements and demonstrated that the mapping is significantly improved over previous techniques, iv) I developed a probabilistic method and demonstrated that glaucomatous disc haemorrhages are influenced by a possible systemic factor that makes both eyes bleed simultaneously. v) I recalculated VF slopes, using the retinal never fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) from the super-resolved OCT as a Bayesian prior and demonstrated that use of VF rates with the Bayesian prior as the outcome measure leads to a reduction in the sample size required to distinguish treatment arms in a clinical trial

    Advancing efficiency and robustness of neural networks for imaging

    Enabling machines to see and analyze the world is a longstanding research objective. Advances in computer vision have the potential of influencing many aspects of our lives as they can enable machines to tackle a variety of tasks. Great progress in computer vision has been made, catalyzed by recent progress in machine learning and especially the breakthroughs achieved by deep artificial neural networks. Goal of this work is to alleviate limitations of deep neural networks that hinder their large-scale adoption for real-world applications. To this end, it investigates methodologies for constructing and training deep neural networks with low computational requirements. Moreover, it explores strategies for achieving robust performance on unseen data. Of particular interest is the application of segmenting volumetric medical scans because of the technical challenges it imposes, as well as its clinical importance. The developed methodologies are generic and of relevance to a broader computer vision and machine learning audience. More specifically, this work introduces an efficient 3D convolutional neural network architecture, which achieves high performance for segmentation of volumetric medical images, an application previously hindered by high computational requirements of 3D networks. It then investigates sensitivity of network performance on hyper-parameter configuration, which we interpret as overfitting the model configuration to the data available during development. It is shown that ensembling a set of models with diverse configurations mitigates this and improves generalization. The thesis then explores how to utilize unlabelled data for learning representations that generalize better. It investigates domain adaptation and introduces an architecture for adversarial networks tailored for adaptation of segmentation networks. Finally, a novel semi-supervised learning method is proposed that introduces a graph in the latent space of a neural network to capture relations between labelled and unlabelled samples. It then regularizes the embedding to form a compact cluster per class, which improves generalization.Open Acces

    Visual Tracking in Robotic Minimally Invasive Surgery

    Intra-operative imaging and robotics are some of the technologies driving forward better and more effective minimally invasive surgical procedures. To advance surgical practice and capabilities further, one of the key requirements for computationally enhanced interventions is to know how instruments and tissues move during the operation. While endoscopic video captures motion, the complex appearance dynamic effects of surgical scenes are challenging for computer vision algorithms to handle with robustness. Tackling both tissue and instrument motion estimation, this thesis proposes a combined non-rigid surface deformation estimation method to track tissue surfaces robustly and in conditions with poor illumination. For instrument tracking, a keypoint based 2D tracker that relies on the Generalized Hough Transform is developed to initialize a 3D tracker in order to robustly track surgical instruments through long sequences that contain complex motions. To handle appearance changes and occlusion a patch-based adaptive weighting with segmentation and scale tracking framework is developed. It takes a tracking-by-detection approach and a segmentation model is used to assigns weights to template patches in order to suppress back- ground information. The performance of the method is thoroughly evaluated showing that without any offline-training, the tracker works well even in complex environments. Finally, the thesis proposes a novel 2D articulated instrument pose estimation framework, which includes detection-regression fully convolutional network and a multiple instrument parsing component. The framework achieves compelling performance and illustrates interesting properties includ- ing transfer between different instrument types and between ex vivo and in vivo data. In summary, the thesis advances the state-of-the art in visual tracking for surgical applications for both tissue and instrument motion estimation.
