Multipath streaming: fundamental limits and efficient algorithms
We investigate streaming over multiple links. A file is split into small
units called chunks that may be requested on the various links according to
some policy, and received after some random delay. After a start-up time called
pre-buffering time, received chunks are played at a fixed speed. There is
starvation if the chunk to be played has not yet arrived. We provide lower
bounds (fundamental limits) on the starvation probability of any policy. We
further propose simple, order-optimal policies that require no feedback. For
general delay distributions, we provide tractable upper bounds for the
starvation probability of the proposed policies, allowing to select the
pre-buffering time appropriately. We specialize our results to: (i) links that
employ CSMA or opportunistic scheduling at the packet level, (ii) links shared
with a primary user (iii) links that use fair rate sharing at the flow level.
We consider a generic model so that our results give insight into the design
and performance of media streaming over (a) wired networks with several paths
between the source and destination, (b) wireless networks featuring spectrum
aggregation and (c) multi-homed wireless networks.Comment: 24 page
Modeling, Simulation and Analysis of Video Streaming Errors in Wireless Wideband Access Networks
Analysis of simulated models has become a veritable tool for
investigating network behavioral patterns vis-à-vis transmitted content. The
streaming video research domain employs modeling extensively due to availability
of relevant tools. A vast majority of which are presented on the FOSS platform.
The transmission of audio and video streaming services over different media is
becoming ever more popular. This widespread increase is accompanied by the
difficult task of maintaining the QoS of streaming video. The use of very accurate
coding techniques for transmissions over wireless networks alone cannot guarantee
a complete eradication of distortions characteristic of the video signal. A software-
hardware composite system has been developed for investigating the effect of
single bit error and bit packet errors in wideband wireless access systems on the
quality of H.264/AVC standard video streams. Numerical results of the modeling
and analysis of the effect of interference robustness on quality of video streaming
are presented and discussed. Analytic results also suggest that the Markov model
of packetization of error obtained from a real network for streaming video can be
used in the simulations of transmission of video across networks in the hardware-
software complex developed by the authors in a previous work
Utility Optimal Scheduling and Admission Control for Adaptive Video Streaming in Small Cell Networks
We consider the jointly optimal design of a transmission scheduling and
admission control policy for adaptive video streaming over small cell networks.
We formulate the problem as a dynamic network utility maximization and observe
that it naturally decomposes into two subproblems: admission control and
transmission scheduling. The resulting algorithms are simple and suitable for
distributed implementation. The admission control decisions involve each user
choosing the quality of the video chunk asked for download, based on the
network congestion in its neighborhood. This form of admission control is
compatible with the current video streaming technology based on the DASH
protocol over TCP connections. Through simulations, we evaluate the performance

Avoiding Interruptions - QoE Trade-offs in Block-coded Streaming Media Applications
We take an analytical approach to study Quality of user Experience (QoE) for
video streaming applications. First, we show that random linear network coding
applied to blocks of video frames can significantly simplify the packet
requests at the network layer and save resources by avoiding duplicate packet
reception. Network coding allows us to model the receiver's buffer as a queue
with Poisson arrivals and deterministic departures. We consider the probability
of interruption in video playback as well as the number of initially buffered
packets (initial waiting time) as the QoE metrics. We characterize the optimal
trade-off between these metrics by providing upper and lower bounds on the
minimum initial buffer size, required to achieve certain level of interruption
probability for different regimes of the system parameters. Our bounds are
