    Streaming Codes for Channels with Burst and Isolated Erasures

    We study low-delay error correction codes for streaming recovery over a class of packet-erasure channels that introduce both burst-erasures and isolated erasures. We propose a simple, yet effective class of codes whose parameters can be tuned to obtain a tradeoff between the capability to correct burst and isolated erasures. Our construction generalizes previously proposed low-delay codes which are effective only against burst erasures. We establish an information theoretic upper bound on the capability of any code to simultaneously correct burst and isolated erasures and show that our proposed constructions meet the upper bound in some special cases. We discuss the operational significance of column-distance and column-span metrics and establish that the rate 1/2 codes discovered by Martinian and Sundberg [IT Trans.\, 2004] through a computer search indeed attain the optimal column-distance and column-span tradeoff. Numerical simulations over a Gilbert-Elliott channel model and a Fritchman model show significant performance gains over previously proposed low-delay codes and random linear codes for certain range of channel parameters

    Memory and Complexity Analysis of On-the-Fly Coding Schemes for Multimedia Multicast Communications

    A new class of erasure codes for delay-constraint applications, called on-the-fly coding, have recently been introduced for their improvements in terms of recovery delay and achievable capacity. Despite their promising characteristics, little is known about the complexity of the systematic and non-systematic variants of this code, notably for live multicast transmission of multimedia content which is their ideal use case. Our paper aims to fill this gap and targets specifically the metrics relevant to mobile receivers with limited resources: buffer size requirements and computation complexity of the receiver. As our contribution, we evaluate both code variants on uniform and bursty erasure channels. Results obtained are unequivocal and demonstrate that the systematic codes outperform the nonsystematic ones, in terms of both the buffer occupancy and computation overhead

    Throughput-Smoothness Trade-offs in Multicasting of an Ordered Packet Stream

    An increasing number of streaming applications need packets to be strictly in-order at the receiver. This paper provides a framework for analyzing in-order packet delivery in such applications. We consider the problem of multicasting an ordered stream of packets to two users over independent erasure channels with instantaneous feedback to the source. Depending upon the channel erasures, a packet which is in-order for one user, may be redundant for the other. Thus there is an inter-dependence between throughput and the smoothness of in-order packet delivery to the two users. We use a Markov chain model of packet decoding to analyze these throughput-smoothness trade-offs of the users, and propose coding schemes that can span different points on each trade-off.Comment: Accepted to NetCod 201
