    A Semantic-Based Middleware for Multimedia Collaborative Applications

    The Internet growth and the performance increase of desktop computers have enabled large-scale distributed multimedia applications. They are expected to grow in demand and services and their traffic volume will dominate. Real-time delivery, scalability, heterogeneity are some requirements of these applications that have motivated a revision of the traditional Internet services, the operating systems structures, and the software systems for supporting application development. This work proposes a Java-based lightweight middleware for the development of large-scale multimedia applications. The middleware offers four services for multimedia applications. First, it provides two scalable lightweight protocols for floor control. One follows a centralized model that easily integrates with centralized resources such as a shared too], and the other is a distributed protocol targeted to distributed resources such as audio. Scalability is achieved by periodically multicasting a heartbeat that conveys state information used by clients to request the resource via temporary TCP connections. Second, it supports intra- and inter-stream synchronization algorithms and policies. We introduce the concept of virtual observer, which perceives the session as being in the same room with a sender. We avoid the need for globally synchronized clocks by introducing the concept of user\u27s multimedia presence, which defines a new manner for combining streams coming from multiple sites. It includes a novel algorithm for estimation and removal of clock skew. In addition, it supports event-driven asynchronous message reception, quality of service measures, and traffic rate control. Finally, the middleware provides support for data sharing via a resilient and scalable protocol for transmission of images that can dynamically change in content and size. The effectiveness of the middleware components is shown with the implementation of Odust, a prototypical sharing tool application built on top of the middleware

    Inter-Destination Multimedia Synchronization; Schemes, Use Cases and Standardization

    Traditionally, the media consumption model has been a passive and isolated activity. However, the advent of media streaming technologies, interactive social applications, and synchronous communications, as well as the convergence between these three developments, point to an evolution towards dynamic shared media experiences. In this new model, geographically distributed groups of consumers, independently of their location and the nature of their end-devices, can be immersed in a common virtual networked environment in which they can share multimedia services, interact and collaborate in real-time within the context of simultaneous media content consumption. In most of these multimedia services and applications, apart from the well-known intra and inter-stream synchronization techniques that are important inside the consumers playout devices, also the synchronization of the playout processes between several distributed receivers, known as multipoint, group or Inter-destination multimedia synchronization (IDMS), becomes essential. Due to the increasing popularity of social networking, this type of multimedia synchronization has gained in popularity in recent years. Although Social TV is perhaps the most prominent use case in which IDMS is useful, in this paper we present up to 19 use cases for IDMS, each one having its own synchronization requirements. Different approaches used in the (recent) past by researchers to achieve IDMS are described and compared.     Review of Media Sync Reference Models: Advances and Open Issues

    The advances on multimedia systems have brought new challenges and requirements for media sync. Over the years, many media sync solutions have been devised. Due to this variety, several studies have surveyed the existing solutions and proposed classification schemes or reference models for media sync. This paper claims the relevance of media sync reference models to systematically structure and synthesize this research area. Accordingly, a review of the existing reference models is provided, by examining the involved features, components and layers in each one of them. Likewise, some inconsistencies, open issues and missing components in existing reference models have been identified. Accordingly, this study reflects the need for a new modular and extensible theoretical framework or reference model to efficiently comprehend the overall media sync research area

    Creating and broadcasting video-based multi-platform experiences

    The majority of TV consumers now watch TV programs in a multi-display environment. Second screens –most often smartphones - are generally used to check information not directly related to the events in the TV content being watched. Broadcasters have tried to orchestrate these different platforms, and there is reason to believe this contributes to user engagement. However, their success has been limited. This might be caused, at least in part, by the different formats of content being used: mobile apps show graphics and text similar to web content, while TV renders a continuous stream of audiovisual content. The arrival of virtual reality displays to the living room further increases the need for consistent experiences across displays. ImmersiaTV is an European H2020 Research and Innovation action that is redesigning the production and delivery process to offer a new form of broadcast multi-platform video. This novel form of multi-platform video is based on the following assumptions: 1. The arrival of head-mounted displays (HMD) to the living room further requires the delivery of content that is consistent across displays, giving freedom to the end-user to engage with content in one or another device. This means that content must be adapted to the specificities of each device, both in terms of content format and interactive input (or lack of interaction, for the case of the TV), but the end-user should be free to adopt one or another device at different moments of the program being broadcasted. 2. This new form of broadcast multi-platform video must seamlessly integrate with and further augment traditional TV and second screen consumer habits. For TV, this means that content can be consumed simply by sitting on the couch and watching, without further input, and that the audiovisual language used follows established conventions. For tablets and smartphones, it means that user input and social media integration must work seamlessly with the specificities of each device. To address these requirements, in the first year of the project we have designed and implemented an end-to-end production, delivery and rendering pipeline for offline content production which specifically addresses these needs. In this short article we outline the design principles, production and delivery methods as well as the tools used and developed for this purpose. Section 2 outlines the design principles adopted, and related academic work. Section 3 introduces the elements constituting the ImmersiaTV end-to-end pipeline and, where there exist, commercial alternatives. Section 4 introduce our main conclusions and further planned work within ImmersiaTV to address some of the limitations detected. The content examples are adapted from the first pilot of ImmersiaTV

    Enhanced adaptive RTCP-based inter-destination multimedia synchronization approach for distributed applications

    [EN] Newer social multimedia applications, such as Social TV or networked multi-player games, enable independent groups (or clusters) of users to interact among themselves and share services within the context of simultaneous media content consumption. In such scenarios, concurrently synchronized playout points must be ensured so as not to degrade the user experience on such interaction. We refer to this process as Inter-Destination Multimedia Synchronization (IDMS). This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of an evolved version of an RTCP-based IDMS approach, including an Adaptive Media Playout (AMP) scheme that aims to dynamically and smoothly adjust the playout timing of each one of the geographically distributed consumers in a specific cluster if an allowable asynchrony threshold between their playout states is exceeded. For that purpose, we previously had also to develop a full implementation of RTP/RTCP protocols for NS-2, in which we included the IDMS approach as an optional functionality. Simulation results prove the feasibility of such IDMS and AMP proposals, by adopting several dynamic master reference selection policies, to maintain an overall synchronization status (within allowable limits) in each cluster of participants, while minimizing the occurrence of long-term playout discontinuities (such as skips/pauses) which are subjectively more annoying and less tolerable to users than small variations in the media playout rate.This work has been financed, partially, by Universitat Politecnica de Valencia (UPV), under its R&D Support Program in PAID-05-11-002-331 Project and in PAID-01-10.     HbbTV-compliant Platform for Hybrid Media Delivery and Synchronization on Single- and Multi-Device Scenarios

    [EN] The combination of broadcast and broadband (hybrid) technologies for delivering TV related media contents can bring fascinating opportunities. It is motivated by the large amount and diversity of media contents, together with the ubiquity and multiple connectivity capabilities of modern consumption devices. This paper presents an end-to-end platform for the preparation, delivery, and synchronized consumption of related hybrid (broadcast/broadband) media contents on a single device and/or on multiple close-by devices (i.e., a multi-device scenario). It is compatible with the latest version of the Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV) standard (version 2.0.1). Additionally, it provides adaptive and efficient solutions for key issues not specified in that standard, but that are necessary to successfully deploy hybrid and multidevice media services. Moreover, apart from MPEG-DASH and HTML5, which are the broadband technologies adopted by HbbTV, the platform also provides support for using HTTP Live Streaming and Real-time Transport Protocol and its companion RTP Control Protocol broadband technologies. The presented platform can provide support for many hybrid media services. In this paper, in order to evaluate it, the use case of multi-device and multi-view TV service has been selected.
