Hysteresis-based design of dynamic reference trajectories to avoid saturation in controlled wind turbines

    Get PDF
The main objective of this paper is to design a dynamic reference trajectory based on hysteresis to avoid saturation in controlled wind turbines. Basically, the torque controller and pitch controller set-points are hysteretically manipulated to avoid saturation and drive the system with smooth dynamic changes. Simulation results obtained from a 5MW wind turbine benchmark model show that our proposed strategy has a clear added value with respect to the baseline controller (a well-known and accepted industrial wind turbine controller). Moreover, the proposed strategy has been tested in healthy conditions but also in the presence of a realistic fault where the baseline controller caused saturation to nally conduct to instability.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Dynamics of double emulsion break-up in three phase glass capillary microfluidic devices

    Get PDF
Pinch-off of a compound jet in 3D glass capillary microfluidic device, which combines co-flowing and countercurrent flow focusing geometries, was investigated using an incompressible three-phase axisymmetric Volume of Fluid–Continuum Surface Force (VOF–CSF) numerical model. The model showed good agreement with the experimental drop generation and was capable of predicting formation of core/shell droplets in dripping, narrowing jetting and widening jetting regimes. In dripping and widening jetting regimes, the presence of a vortex flow around the upstream end of the necking thread facilitates the jet break-up. No vortex flow was observed in narrowing jetting regime and pinch-off occurred due to higher velocity at the downstream end of the coaxial thread compared to that at the upstream end. In all regimes, the inner jet ruptured before the outer jet, preventing a leakage of the inner drop into the outer fluid. The necking region moves at the maximum speed in the narrowing jetting regime, due to the highest level of shear at the outer surface of the thread. However, in widening jetting regime, the neck travels the longest distance downstream before it breaks

An Accurate EEGNet-based Motor-Imagery Brain-Computer Interface for Low-Power Edge Computing

This paper presents an accurate and robust embedded motor-imagery brain-computer interface (MI-BCI). The proposed novel model, based on EEGNet, matches the requirements of memory footprint and computational resources of low-power microcontroller units (MCUs), such as the ARM Cortex-M family. Furthermore, the paper presents a set of methods, including temporal downsampling, channel selection, and narrowing of the classification window, to further scale down the model to relax memory requirements with negligible accuracy degradation. Experimental results on the Physionet EEG Motor Movement/Imagery Dataset show that standard EEGNet achieves 82.43%, 75.07%, and 65.07% classification accuracy on 2-, 3-, and 4-class MI tasks in global validation, outperforming the state-of-the-art (SoA) convolutional neural network (CNN) by 2.05%, 5.25%, and 5.48%. Our novel method further scales down the standard EEGNet at a negligible accuracy loss of 0.31% with 7.6x memory footprint reduction and a small accuracy loss of 2.51% with 15x reduction. The scaled models are deployed on a commercial Cortex-M4F MCU taking 101ms and consuming 4.28mJ per inference for operating the smallest model, and on a Cortex-M7 with 44ms and 18.1mJ per inference for the medium-sized model, enabling a fully autonomous, wearable, and accurate low-power BCI

Origin of the anomalous mass renormalization in metallic quantum well states of correlated oxide SrVO3_3

InIn situsitu angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has been performed on SrVO3_3 ultrathin films, which show metallic quantum well (QW) states, to unveil the origin of the anomalous mass enhancement in the QW subbands. The line-shape analysis of the ARPES spectra reveals that the strength of the electron correlation increases as the subband bottom energy approaches the Fermi level. These results indicate that the anomalous subband-dependent mass enhancement mainly arises from the quasi-one-dimensional character of confined V 3d3d states as a result of their orbital-selective quantization.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

Are bisphosphonates effective in the treatment of osteoarthritis pain? A meta-analysis and systematic review.

    Get PDF
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis worldwide. Pain and reduced function are the main symptoms in this prevalent disease. There are currently no treatments for OA that modify disease progression; therefore analgesic drugs and joint replacement for larger joints are the standard of care. In light of several recent studies reporting the use of bisphosphonates for OA treatment, our work aimed to evaluate published literature to assess the effectiveness of bisphosphonates in OA treatment

    Independent AND-parallel implementation of narrowing

    Get PDF
We present a parallel graph narrowing machine, which is used to implement a functional logic language on a shared memory multiprocessor. It is an extensiĂłn of an abstract machine for a purely functional language. The result is a programmed graph reduction machine which integrates the mechanisms of unification, backtracking, and independent and-parallelism. In the machine, the subexpressions of an expression can run in parallel. In the case of backtracking, the structure of an expression is used to avoid the reevaluation of subexpressions as far as possible. Deterministic computations are detected. Their results are maintained and need not be reevaluated after backtracking
