Evaluation of a personalized digital library based on cognitive styles: Adaptivity vs. adaptability
Personalization can be addressed by adaptability and adaptivity, which have different advantages and disadvantages. This study investigates how digital library users react to these two techniques. More specifically, we develop a
personalized digital library to suit the needs of different cognitive styles based on the findings of our previous work (Frias-Martinez, et al., in press). The personalized digital library includes two versions: adaptive version and
adaptable version. The results showed that users not only performed better in the adaptive version, but also they perceived more positively to the adaptive version. In addition, cognitive styles have great effects on users’ responses
to adaptability and adaptivity. These results provide guidance for designers to select suitable techniques to develop personalized digital libraries
You can't see what you can't see: Experimental evidence for how much relevant information may be missed due to Google's Web search personalisation
The influence of Web search personalisation on professional knowledge work is
an understudied area. Here we investigate how public sector officials
self-assess their dependency on the Google Web search engine, whether they are
aware of the potential impact of algorithmic biases on their ability to
retrieve all relevant information, and how much relevant information may
actually be missed due to Web search personalisation. We find that the majority
of participants in our experimental study are neither aware that there is a
potential problem nor do they have a strategy to mitigate the risk of missing
relevant information when performing online searches. Most significantly, we
provide empirical evidence that up to 20% of relevant information may be missed
due to Web search personalisation. This work has significant implications for
Web research by public sector professionals, who should be provided with
training about the potential algorithmic biases that may affect their judgments
and decision making, as well as clear guidelines how to minimise the risk of

Dominant Search Engines: An Essential Cultural & Political Facility
When American lawyers talk about essential facilities, they are usually referring to antitrust doctrine that has required certain platforms to provide access on fair and nondiscriminatory terms to all comers. Some have recently characterized Google as an essential facility. Antitrust law may shape the search engine industry in positive ways. However, scholars and activists must move beyond the crabbed vocabulary of competition policy to develop a richer normative critique of search engine dominance.
In this chapter, I sketch a new concept of essential cultural and political facility, which can help policymakers recognize and address situations where a bottleneck has become important enough that special scrutiny is warranted. This scrutiny may not always culminate in regulation. However, it clearly suggests a need for publicly funded alternatives to the concentrated conduits and content providers colonizing the web
Student-Centered Learning: Functional Requirements for Integrated Systems to Optimize Learning
The realities of the 21st-century learner require that schools and educators fundamentally change their practice. "Educators must produce college- and career-ready graduates that reflect the future these students will face. And, they must facilitate learning through means that align with the defining attributes of this generation of learners."Today, we know more than ever about how students learn, acknowledging that the process isn't the same for every student and doesn't remain the same for each individual, depending upon maturation and the content being learned. This comprehensive framework will help districts and schools determine what systems to use and integrate as they being their journey toward student-centered learning, as well as how systems integration aligns with their organizational vision, educational goals and strategic plans.Educators can use this report to optimize student learning and promote innovation in their own student-centered learning environments. Assessing the Effectiveness and Usability of Personalized Internet Search through a Longitudinal Evaluation
This paper discusses a longitudinal user evaluation of Prospector, a personalized Internet meta-search engine capable of personalized re-ranking of search results. Twenty-one participants used Prospector as their primary search engine for 12 days, agreed to have their interaction with the system logged, and completed three questionnaires. The data logs show that the personalization provided by Prospector is successful: participants preferred re-ranked results that appeared higher up. However, the questionnaire results indicated that people would prefer to use Google instead (their search engine of choice). Users would, nevertheless, consider employing a personalized search engine to perform searches with terms that require disambiguation and/or contextualization. We conclude the paper with a discussion on the merit of combining system- and user-centered evaluation for the case of personalized systems
The contribution of data mining to information science
The information explosion is a serious challenge for current information institutions. On the other hand, data mining, which is the search for valuable information in large volumes of data, is one of the solutions to face this challenge. In the past several years, data mining has made a significant contribution to the field of information science. This paper examines the impact of data mining by reviewing existing applications, including personalized environments, electronic commerce, and search engines. For these three types of application, how data mining can enhance their functions is discussed. The reader of this paper is expected to get an overview of the state of the art research associated with these applications. Furthermore, we identify the limitations of current work and raise several directions for future research
Domain-specific queries and Web search personalization: some investigations
Major search engines deploy personalized Web results to enhance users'
experience, by showing them data supposed to be relevant to their interests.
Even if this process may bring benefits to users while browsing, it also raises
concerns on the selection of the search results. In particular, users may be
unknowingly trapped by search engines in protective information bubbles, called
"filter bubbles", which can have the undesired effect of separating users from
information that does not fit their preferences. This paper moves from early
results on quantification of personalization over Google search query results.
Inspired by previous works, we have carried out some experiments consisting of
search queries performed by a battery of Google accounts with differently
prepared profiles. Matching query results, we quantify the level of
personalization, according to topics of the queries and the profile of the
accounts. This work reports initial results and it is a first step a for more

Black Hats, Farms, and Bubbles: How Emerging Marketing and Content Production Models are Making Research More Difficult (And What You And Your Students Can Do About It)
Google, and other search engines, have made tremendous progress organizing the world’s knowledge. However, accessing that knowledge is becoming increasingly difficult because of emerging marketing and content production models utilized by high-ranking sites like eHow.com and ExpertVillage.com. Search Engine Optimization (SEO), content farms and Google\u27s increasingly personalized search algorithms are making search engines less effective as academic research tools. For example, “black hat” Search Engine Optimization (SEO), a dubious set of techniques that intentionally deceive users and search engines to overvalue some site’s relevance and content, have become common practice on the Web. “Content farms,” that pay freelance writers to churn out low-quality content based on search engine keywords have begun outnumbering more reputable sources in search results. Research suggests that these emerging information challenges are creating problems for college students. Studies have shown that students only explore the first few search engines results regardless of quality. Project Information Literacy research concluded that students are reluctant to try new search strategies. Therefore students are exposed to more shallow, low quality results than ever before. In this session, learn more about the technologies behind these emerging marketing and content production models.
