Planning-based Social Partners for Children with Autism

    Get PDF
This paper describes the design and implementation of a planning-based socially intelligent agent built to help young children with Autism Spectrum Conditions acquire social communication skills. We explain how planning technology allowed us to satisfy agent’s design requirements that we identified through our consultations with children and carers and through a review of best practices for autism intervention. We discuss the design principles implemented, the engineering challenges faced and the lessons learned from building our pedagogical agent. We conclude by presenting substantial experimental results concerning the agent’s efficacy

Drama Therapy Interventions that Support Students with ASD During COVID-19

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic that began in December 2019, many people experienced traumatic losses, environmental stressors, and overall daily challenges. One of the populations most at risk during this time were those with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Those with mental health illness and developmental differences are experiencing the pandemic in different ways. Individuals with ASD tend to have both developmental differences and mental health challenges that motivate individuals to seek medicinal and therapeutic help, along with other services to support their daily needs. This literature review addresses the negative and positive impacts COVID-19 has had on the ASD population. There will be a focus on children and adolescents with ASD, who are experiencing virtual learning and how their social and emotional skills (SEL) might be at risk during this time due to these unforeseeable factors. Drama therapy techniques and interventions such as role-play, storytelling, projective tools, and embodiment will be explored as therapeutic options for the ASD population to work through areas of anxiety, depression, isolation, social-emotional learning skills, and overall wellness. The literature supports how these drama therapy interventions complement the ASD population in therapeutic services and can be a prominent benefit to combat the stressors of the COVID-19 pandemic

Focusing on Friendship: Online Supported Activities for Adolescents on the Autism Spectrum

A core feature of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is social skills differences. Social skills groups have received support as an intervention that fosters social skills of those with ASD. However, there is limited information about the use of telehealth-based social skills groups. The proposed ASD adolescent social group design is formatted for telehealth services, and has been conducted virtually since 2020. This ASD social group program features unique virtual teaching and recreational activity curriculum as well as some program evaluation data methods and responses from participants

How getting noticed helps getting on: successful attention capture doubles children's cooperative play

    Get PDF
Cooperative social interaction is a complex skill that involves maintaining shared attention and continually negotiating a common frame of reference. Privileged in human evolution, cooperation provides support for the development of social-cognitive skills. We hypothesize that providing audio support for capturing playmates' attention will increase cooperative play in groups of young children. Attention capture was manipulated via an audio-augmented toy to boost children's attention bids. Study 1 (48 6- to 11-year-olds) showed that the augmented toy yielded significantly more cooperative play in triads compared to the same toy without augmentation. In Study 2 (33 7- to 9-year-olds) the augmented toy supported greater success of attention bids, which were associated with longer cooperative play, associated in turn with better group narratives. The results show how cooperation requires moment-by-moment coordination of attention and how we can manipulate environments to reveal and support mechanisms of social interaction. Our findings have implications for understanding the role of joint attention in the development of cooperative action and shared understanding

This open access book constitutes the refereed proceedings of 1st International Workshop on Psychology, Learning, Technology, PLT 2022, Foggia, Italy, during January 2022. The 8 full papers presented here were carefully reviewed and selected from 23 submissions. In addition, one invited paper is also included. Psychology, Learning, ad Technology Conference (PLT2022) aims to explore learning paths that incorporate digital technologies in innovative and transformative ways and the improvement of the psychological and relational life. The conference includes topics about the methodology of application of the ICT tools in psychology and education: from blended learning to the application of artificial intelligence in education; from the teaching, learning, and assessment strategies and practices to the new frontiers on Human-Computer Interaction

    Technology Use in Early Childhood

    Get PDF
This literature review examines the influence of technology on early childhood development. It uses scholarly journals and articles to show the benefits and risks of technology use and how it can be used to compliment growth, development, and learning of young children. It also examines how technology can impact the early childhood developmental domains of: (a) social emotional, (b) cognitive, (c) physical motor, (d) language and literacy, and (e) mathematics. The influence of technology use on teaching and the family are also addressed. Furthermore, this literature review includes implications for the future, continuing research, and recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), The United States Department of Education (DoEd), and The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) & The Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children\u27s Media
